Why do you think Johnny klebitz is boring.

Recommended Posts

Wolfhawk33

When people talk about Johnny klebitz theirs always that one person who says

"Johnny klebitz is a boring character"

Now I have to ask, why do you think that?

Is it because

A. He's a gang member

B. He got addicted to meth

C. He was easily killed off by Trevor

(If your answer is A) alot of the GTA protagonist are apart of gangs and/or have been seen helping gangs.

(If your answer is B) now I'll admit that getting addicted to meth was one of the worst things that Johnny klebitz did as a character, but to say that makes him a bad character is a bit of a stretch, not to mention that almost every GTA protagonist has some sort of addiction.

(If your answer is C) what if Trevor Philips was easily killed off by the next GTA protagonist? Would you suddenly say that Trevor Philips is a boring GTA protagonist?

Now my personal thoughts on Johnny klebitz are he was a great Character with a tragic end.

Why is this in the GTA V thread? Shouldn't this be in the IV or EFLC thread or something?

Anyway, as someone who finds him boring, it's not because of any of those reasons, it's mainly because he isn't a very interesting character. That doesn't directly mean he is a bad character, but compared to other protagonists, his story isn't really as interesting.

After killing so many Lost as Trevor, Niko and Luis I felt it very difficult to have any sympathy for them, I played IV after I played V, for me Johnny is not boring, he rather is an annoying punk as are all Lost.

He's one of the most interesting and morally grey characters in a Rockstar game next to John Marston and Arthur Morgan, he got dirtied in GTA V for literally no reason, they could have just put the Angels of Death in place of the Lost in GTA V and none would be the wiser.

The only reason he's there is so they can make a callback to people who played GTA IV, and at the same time, sh*t on people who enjoyed The Lost and Damned, by turning an Anti-Drug character into a Drug user.

It makes sort of sense, he knew that Ashley would one day be the death of him in TLAD and it turns true in V. But it felt like a good conclusion to his story in TLAD, killing Billy, burning down the Clubhouse, moving on from the Lost. Only to just go right back into Los Santos, instead of Alderney, and take up drugs with Ashley, who somehow never went to rehab despite Johnny giving her the money to do so.

For me I need to add "D" - because I see him as both blind and deaf, as well as unable to learn from his mistakes. Though, I don't think he's boring for it, I just think it makes sense what happened to him, since he never grows.

I'll say that I found Johnny pretty uninteresting/not particularly sympathetic, because:

a) His character doesn't grow or change at all over the course of TLAD. He's still pretty much exactly the same guy at the end as at the beginning, and doesn't seem to have learned anything from his experiences

b) He's a bit of a hypocrite. He spends a lot of the time talking about how important his brothers in the Lost are to him - but then he goes and kills most of them. And for what? Because they remain faithful to Billy, who is after all still president of the gang (and who hasn't snitched on them at that point). In other words, he professes to love the Lost, but won't follow its chain of command, and in fact would rather kill most of its members than do so.

c) Personality-wise, he's not very exciting. No internal conflict. Thinks before he acts. Responsible rather than reckless. Not much fun.

I was entirely ambivalent when Trevor offed him - although I did think it was a rather cheap way to establish Trevor as a badass psychopath...….

It would be the greatest day in the history of the series to wipe the overrated smug c*nt off the face of the GTA Earth.

Anyway no Johnny isn't boring. I loved his story in TLAD and rank him in my top 3 alongside Niko and Tommy.

He was not boring, but he was not that interesting either. Having said that, TLAD storyline was very good.

Because he had that “I’m the protagonist so I have to be mature and not a hot head” personality.

Still a badass though

Did anyone else have enough of him saying "Let's do this" ?

Found him less interesting than Niko, but his story was a lot shorter, so that's perhaps to be expected.

The only real problem I had with him was the way he looked when he was sprinting. Like he had a bad bathroom emergency while riding his bike.

That, and the inability to change even a single item of clothing on him indefinitely. That lack of personalization helps add a layer of detachment.

Neither of your answers.

And option b and c actually made him interesting again.

Boring cuz he's in a gang? Kinda reason is that?!

Anyhow,

Johnny SEEMED interesting in Gta 4,

before R* decided to water him down to some mass appealing protagonist.

His clothes became more mass appealing, tattoos were washed down.

And in Gta 4 it was slightly pointed out he's a bit racist.

Even though that was bullsh*t artist pbx.

In TLAD he has character traits like Niko, which doesn't fit him.

His whole tone from cut scenes which also appear in Gta 4 don't fit anymore.

His best friend Jim became dark skinned where the GTA4 Jim was white and patriotic, commenting how Niko can't ride like real Americans.

In TLAD they made sure Jim still says something like that only in a different context. (American bikes/Malc)

And Johnny became a jew to further wipe out any assumptions he could be racist.

His appearance in Gta 5 was entertaining.

Glad he got killed off like that

They even further messed it up. Having the Jim biker appear only in that particular cut scene when Johnny hands him over the cash.

Jim Was the fat white biker who insults Niko.

Game files prove that. Liberty City newspaper too.

The silent biker is meant to die in a scripted train crash, "making it hard to identify this one", but the other is identified as Jim Fitzgerald

I don’t think he’s boring as much as he is stupid. He made a stupid mistake by letting Ashley get the best of him (which spoiler but dellik steg eh). I mean as we’ve seen in TLAD he was pretty levelheaded and smart to not stoop to her level.

Capture

In GTA IV Jim was depicted as generic balding, Caucasian biker. It's unknown why exactly his appearance was completely changed, but I assume it's a bit like when they overhauled Vic from Vice City to VCS. Maybe they had no plans for Jim to be a major character in TLAD, but saw potential in him later on.

I think why he's black in TLAD is to drive the point that The Lost aren't racist rednecks like the AOD and skin colour is no boundary for the brotherhood and like I said the original "Jim" looked generic like a random biker/gang member.

I can't lie, I just did not find that biker stuff in an NYC setting very interesting or exciting, which is probably more to do with the fact that mostly white outlaw biker gangs not seen in NYC, so it's very unrealistic. The story was good enough to keep me interested though as it tied in nicely with IV and TBOGT, so it gets a pass from me just about.

TLAD would have better suited as a V DLC, as white outlaw biker gangs are very big in California.

Okay, that clears it up for me. I didn't even realize Jim was different in IV than he was in TLAD, despite having played the whole saga a multitude of times.

My initial response was to ask "Then who was the black guy he was friends with in TLaD and does the bike heist at the strip club with", thinking I must have names mixed up, but then I read your response again and realized you were talking about TLAD and IV, and not IV and V.

The whole time I was thinking of IV and V, not IV and TLaD. Now it makes sense. What a dumb continuity problem. I saw this same screenshot with Black Jim in it, is that a mod or is it fixed in the game at some point? I haven't played IV in a long time at this point, despite having installed it months ago to do just that. 😛

And hold up, if he was the guy that died in the subway, Is Jim even in V? Now I'm all kinds of confused. Who is the black dude in V's lost cutscenes when they discover what Trevor done'did?

I had the DLC packs for IV and I later bought EFLC as well.

edit: This one:

Side note: Do you know how f*cking good it feels to be wrong about something just now? It feels f*cking good is how it feels.

Jim isn't in V, it's Terry (white dude) and Clay (other black dude) in that scene.

I would mix up some of the biker characters when first playing TLAD as well. There isn't much time to introduce each one, they all dress the same and several look quite similar, they're most often seen all together riding bikes with you with the view from behind where it's hard to tell them apart or know which one is speaking, and they're not the most distinctive characters, so it's easily done.

Jim is DEAD, for FIVE years in GTA 5.

The black biker in "Mr Philips" is Clay, who is mostly seen with Terry in TLAD.

That screenshot above is a mod.

rockstar messed this up. they wanted to touch a topic like racism and made some TLAD bikers appear racist, at least, patriotic, but ultimately didn't have the balls to do so. could have been interesting.

They still touched on the subject of racism within the game though, for a start by having AOD being white supremacists and also Billy Grey making quite a few racist remarks. It's understandable that for a short DLC game they went with a somewhat simplified way of distinguishing the "good" guys (or at least more likeable and on your side) from the bad guys imo. Considering the game opens with the leader of The Lost making disparaging comments about Johnny being Jewish in their first conversation I think racism would've been explored more if it was a full game, they didn't totally shy away from the subject. Racism was also already tackled in more nuanced ways throughout IV, with the space a longer game gave to do that. Like, I don't think having a white character who is on your side (Gerry McReary) casually saying the n word with a hard r shows lack of balls.

CLAY! That's it, thank you so much, my memory was hazy of the characters as I haven't played in quite a while.

Johnny was never a personal favourite of mine, but overtime he's grown on me as a character, and I'd objectively rank him second best to Niko Bellic. He's remarkably similar to Arthur Morgan if not considerably less developed. However, he's all around a reasonable guy who is somewhat of a grey character. Considering his story is so short, he was never going to have much time to shine, and I feel it would've been great to have a much longer storyline, though what we got is great anyway, especially since it's DLC we're talking about. I was never pleased with how Johnny was killed by Trevor since it was very much poorly executed. Apparently this man who had the willpower to shun Ashley after he had enough not only fell back in with her, but even got addicted to the habits she lived with.

This was probably the only way a big tough biker like him could reasonably be killed by Trevor, who was nothing more than a raging loony. It's not very good writing if this character you're introducing kills off another previous character just to show how badass he is. It's like that scene in Jurassic Park III where the Spinosaurus killed the Tyrannosaurus. We were never going to have an easy time accepting a new dinosaur over the one we already had, but killing off the one we had was never going to make us like it. Same applies with Trevor and Johnny. I'm not going to like Trevor just cause he killed Johnny, in fact I'm probably going to dislike him more. Ultimately though, I don't think Johnny Klebitz is boring. Just a character who never got as much development as he should but still turned out fine.
