Arthur Morgan - Did it happen before?

Recommended Posts

BTNH

After Arthur gets TB I'm sure many people who played the game did a bit of research on what TB actually is.

Now of course I'm still no expert, but what I found surprising is that TB is a disease which actually takes a pretty long time to kill you. Doc Holliday, a character some believe Arthur was partially based on had it for 14 years before it finally killed him.

Is it possible that Arthur had latent TB some years before the events of the game which had then progressed by the time we play? I have only done one play through, but I have heard a few people say that Hosea was also sick at the time with a constant cough of his own. That being said, I don't doubt that R* anticipate fan theories and threw that subtle clue in there to keep conversations alive.

One thing that did bother me slightly however is that Arthur never explicitly tells anyone in the camp of his condition and there seemed to be no inclination that he was contagious and could perhaps spread the disease around. I think the 4 endings were perfect, but would it not have made more sense for Arthur to tell John in confidence that he was dying of TB and was going to escape to the desert (New Austin) in fear of spreading the disease, and for John to escape with Abigail and Jack?

Funny I just loaded up chapter 1 and Arthur coughed and spat into the snow, made me think if he'd had it a while already

I think the idea is the ship sinking and ending up on Guarma greatly accelerated the disease.

Well that and fighting Micah on a mountain or having a knife fight with him at a burning camp wouldn't exactly help things.

Pretty sure that by half way through chapter 6 everyone in the camp knew that he was dying of TB.

Hosea more than likely has Lung Cancer. Guy is in his sixties and has probably been smoking since he was in his early teens.

Arthur probably has bronchitis from the smoking as well.

Arthur probably died from septic shock due to a combination of TB and his injuries from the fight with Micah.

Before I checked his journal entry I thought he caught TB from Hosea

Nah, he got it from beating the man who had it. It was R's way of karma, and a cheesy plot line to bait emotion. I hate that storyline.

If you go by Arthur's journal then Thomas Downes is the one who gave him TB. He spits blood into Arthur's mouth (a well known way to infect someone) after being beaten up for money that Strauss lent him.

TBH that's what Arthur thinks- and to him it makes perfect sense that something bad would happen to him because he's a bad person. It's just someone without serious medical knowledge (even 19th C medical knowledge) logically connecting the dots in their mind as to what happened.

Thematically, it sort of fits into the general themes of RDRII but in reality, he could have easily already had TB even before that.

There was a theory that he more or less died of exposure after falling unconscious on top of the mountain.

Y’know, one thing that nags me a bit: saying a high honor Arthur actually dies of his TB.  If he was truly in terminal endstage TB, he’d be in bed helplessly and slowly suffocating, not running around three states trying to help everyone in sight.  He was badly off, no question, but he still had enough left in the tank to take on all those missions in that month-ish they likely spent at Beaver Hollow, and also remark to Abigail and Sadie that he needed to confront Dutch “before I get much sicker”, so he thought he still had a little time left.

No question that last mission took it out of him.  He clearly passed out on the mountain due to the insane level of exertion, and yeah, him and Micah mutually beating the sh*t out of each other also didn’t help.  And he’s passed out from TB-induced hypoxia before several times, and been rescued by people like Charlotte or the Muellers.

The TB ran him down to this point, and he passed out again, but as he was alone up there, and the temperature dropped after dark, he likely actually died of hypothermia/exposure without ever waking up again.

(Point being if he got off that mountain and out of cold, damp Roanoke Ridge, he might have still had a chance to recover

Here's a rumored image of Doc Holliday in the last stages of his TB- Arthur clearly hadn't gotten to that stage when he died.

Spoiler

I mean it's a logical conclusion even with the little medical knowldege they had back then - downes was already deathly sick with the same disease, and coughed blood right into Arthur's face.
