Daniel Ahmad, analyst at Niko Partners, has just tweeted that Sony are in “advanced board level discussions to acquire Take-Two Interactive”. His report comes from MarketWatch, published by Dow Jones, which tracks trading for investors.

Take-Two Interactive is the home of Rockstar and Grand Theft Auto, along with other huge franchises such as Bioshock, WWE 2K, Borderlands, XCOM, Red Dead, and Civilization.

Just imagine if Grand Theft Auto VI was a PlayStation 5 exclusive… or Agent was brought back from the dead.

We should point out that this is just a rumour, although if MarketWatch are publishing it then it’s quite likely there’s some truth in it.

If this happens do you know what means? Gta and other r* games will be PS only titles and that if pc gets lucky with a release.

maybe online won’t be sh*t in the future.

Exclusivity is the least of my concerns.

What are the rest of them? From what I'm aware, Sony are pretty good as a publisher.

They make great single-player games, the developers love them because they essentially get free reign to do whatever they want with the games.

Online likely wouldn't be as money grubby as it is under the current Take Two leadership.

I'm all for it tbh.

Subscription instead of micro transactions, hmmmm. Perhaps them and Microsoft can finally get drunk together and have a beautiful cross-platform baby

@Natsuki

I don't follow the gaming industry anymore, but I'll take your word for it 😁. They seem to be doing pretty well in that regard.

My primary concern is what happens when the current Sony leadership retires or leaves the company for any number of reasons?

Sony could get stuck with someone who's shortsighted & demands immediate to short-term results on annual basis. Something with the complexity of GTA V can't be done on annual basis, not without a big compromise.

Look no further than Microsoft under Satya Nadella. Dude has been killing projects left & right since he was appointed CEO Or Ford Motors post Allan Mulally or Motorola post the split up.

If it means my favourite franchises improve, great. But beyond that I don't really have an opinion.

Gran Turismo's shift in focus was a bitter pill to swallow though to be fair.

But I don't know much about other Sony produced games. Is Spiderman one too? That's a decent game for my lad, so I could be plucking one bad example out of many good ones, lol. :)

I don't know much about GT, but there are plenty of good Single Player titles.

Spider-Man, The Last of Us (with a new one coming soon), The Uncharted series, Horizon Zero Dawn, Bloodborn and many more.

@IceDree raises an excellent point that I hadn't previously considered.

This is now my number one concern if Sony actually does go forward with this.

Second to that is exclusivity. While I do own a PS4, the Xbox is a great console in it's own right and there's countless players who would miss out if they made it an exclusive. My gameplay experiences with GTA IV, The Lost & the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony were entirely on the Xbox 360 and had those games been Sony exclusives I would have truly missed out. Many friends of mine IRL also have Xbox Ones and I've been able to share in the love of GTA and Red Dead Redemption with them. While I do still have countless friends with Sony, losing the Xbox side of the equation would be a real detriment to me.

If GTA stayed a Sony exclusive during the 3D era and never went to Xbox (in an alternate universe) it might be fine. But considering Xbox has had access to GTA games since fall of 2003 - almost 16 full years now - the genie is out of the bottle and it's far too late to reverse course.

Single player games were good that they made ya but some with online attached have been grubby like someone mentioned Gran Turismo. I find they keep the predatory practices in place on already released games maybe GTA6 with online though would be better that's true. I don't think present systems will change like Red Dead or GTAV online unfortunetly, hard to say but T2 is pretty garbage can't be too much worse. Ha look at their Basketball games that's what T2 at it's full greed mode wants probably for R* games if they could.

Not played any of those, lol, but considering TLoU as I heard much good on that game. But that's not to say those games aren't awesome for those that did of course. They're just not my type of game is all.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up though. Always good to learn of story mode games doing well with how gaming is going. :)

"This is purely unconfirmed market speculation that is making the rounds," he said. "I am not the source of this story in any regard. And not sure who quoted me as I didn't speak with anyone over the phone (unless someone saw a trading note that I wrote)."

Kulina did release a note today that included the bit MarketWatch quoted under a heading specifying, "TTWO M&A CHATTER MAKING ROUNDS...+2.5% - NO SOURCE **UNCONFIRMED**"

"The stock shot up at the start of trade today to lead the S&P 500 and I was simply looking for plausible explanations," Matthews said. "Joel's in a good position to know what's moving individual tech stocks, even if they are just rumors. In terms of timing, [Take-Two] stock was well up before his email went out, so it was not his dissemination of the rumor that sparked the move."

This is not to say that Sony is definitively not buying Take-Two Interactive for $130 per share, but it is perhaps to point out that the stories currently making the rounds aren't stemming from any individual actually asserting them as true.

And PC too, IIRC all GTA games except the handheld-devices ones were released on PC.

I agree, its too late for that.

I guarantee that micro transactions will still exist even with a GTAO subscription service.

I wouldn't say GTS shift was Sony's fault, Kaz is a very "peculiar guy" kinda like Kojima. Honestly, I think Sony is kind of a dumbass lately, jacking up Ps plus and trying to shill out Ps now. Would they focus on Microtransaction? That remains to be seen, and honestly, I don't think they'd care seeing how Rdr2 and Blopb4 are already under their banner.

As far as exclusives, nothing major, maybe exclusive betas and online content. But the pc guys? I'd be a little worried, maybe Sony will clamp down on modding. Sure resident evil got mods, but thats purely a single player game.

I don't see this being good for PC owners so I vote no.

And if one is concern about modding getting out of hand, T2/R* can afford to make the necessary changes next time around to clamp down on it. One way is to stop being cheap with the p2p online.

Tlou was awesome, though maybe not for everyone but easily one of the best games of all time as far as story goes. The last Uncharted was a blast and I cant see anyone just not enjoying the hell out of it. I remember these games as if they were movies I saw rather than games I played.

If something like this brought back to the good old days of GTA and before the recent craziness that online has become then I welcome it.

Sorry, @White Shark I was doing a heist set-up; trying to look at this thread, type and fly a jet all at the same time lol.

I would say there's more than enough money available through subscription payments to make microtransactions possibly redundant.

My very, very rough estimate should generate $1.2 Billion a year for them, adding microtransactions on top of that would be nothing short of spectacular, unadulterated greed, and I for one have had more than enough of that from the current leadership.

No, I will not show my workings.:p

Good thing this was just a fake rumor.

Take Two going to Sony and making exclusive games would be terrible. Most of their titles are multi platform. Not just looking at R* titles but also on the 2K side of things with NBA 2k They'd lose money as well.

It's fine as long as they dont aim for exclusivity. Take GTA 5's earnings, divide by 5, that's what GTA 6 would earn with console exclusivity.

The flip-side, how many Playstation consoles would GTA 6 sell?

Although Playstation is my favorite console, GTA and other big R* titles are franchises that shouldn't  be Playstation exclusives. Especially after all these years. That would cause so much backlash. PC gamers were furious when RDR 2 didn't come out for PC, imagine what would happen if a franchise like GTA did that to both Xbox and PC fans. They could make Agent a Sony exclusive for more funding in it's development cycle (if they want to bring that back), but other Rockstar titles? No.

I don't want Sony to buy Take Two. It would mean an end to PC releases and the modding community for the series.
