Is Red Dead Redemption 2 R*'s Magnum Opus?

I just watched the first video. What a mish-mash of inconsistent trendy comments thrown together.

Battle Royal Games being more creative, wtf? The rules are the same all the time (you have to kill everyone else and be the last man standing), that's nothing like an open world free mode whether it's SP or MP. That's not to say Battle Royal can't be fun, but trying to argue it offers more variability than free mode is complete rubbish. The argument that seems to imply a linear story mode and good free mode are mutually exclusive is also a bigger pile of horse do-do's than you literally see from Arthur's trusty steed in the game. It's entirely possible to have both because they player can choose how to spend their time. If he doesn't like free mode in RDR2, it's got nothing to do with how R* designed the story missions, it's just he doesn't like how they designed freemode and the options.

Outdated design? That's the same argument that led EA to churn out that monstrosity that was C&C 4. The old command and conquer was a classic format. Change isn't always good. There's a reason the rules of chess haven't changed in hundreds of years.

Then again, he's sitting on a fitness ball. I mean why? I should have known it would be guff, questioning why I bothered to watch it now.

Then again, chess are boring as f*ck and R* doesn't revolutionalize the gaming industry as they used to, you sir are a fanboy of a company that doesn't give two sh*ts about its playerbase and is falling very fast into mediocrity...also you didn't really get the video at all, you are probably just too busy sucking on R* cocks, that's all I have to say, bye have a great day

Ive replayed it 5 times and its still one of the best games i know

It is, but replaying it just because the story is good doesn't do it for me...that's all you can really do...replay...the same experience every time...doesn't that bore you out a little bit?

You could have had a good argument in there somewhere and it would have been destroyed by your unnecessary attitude.

Not really but thats the same case with literally every game. Things to do after the story doesnt have anything to do with being a magnum opus

this is a videogame, not a movie, and if it was a movie it wouldn't even be a good western. Rdr 1 is far more superior to Rdr 2 in every way except the graphics (what we could expect). As a movie it gets a pass, but as a videogame it's just repetitive boring unresponsive game with a lot of unused potential...they even f*cked up the most western part of the game being new austin and mexico...and don't get me started on guarma.

I'm already lvl 80 in online and played over 400 hours in singleplayer and right now after all this I just started seeing this game as it is, the hype I got from 2016 just vanished and I realised this isn't really a game I took it for, when you experiencce everything this game has to offer you will see it the same way...there's no way RDR 2 could be R*'s magnum opus. And sorry for overreacting on people defending rockstar for the sh*t they pulled off but I can't help it, you fanboys are participating in ruining the videogame industry as a whole. Peace.

The video has been circulated and dismissed.

Consumers as a rule don't ruin franchises. Buy what you like, don't buy what you don't, and the developers ultimately follow what people pay for.

It sounds like RDR Online isn't doing so well (anecdotally, I haven't played it, I like single player RDR2, GTA O and GTA IV MP), if that's the case then you can be assured R* will make changes on that front regardless of whether some of us like the SP game mode or not.

If they make mistakes it's really on the developers not their customer base, because they misread the situation. As per my earlier example, C&C 4. EA totally destroyed the franchise because they thought it needed to go in a completely different direction gameplay wise. Whereas most probably if it had continued on an evolutionary path, with some tweaks but the same philosophy, the game would have probably done well.

They haven't made their Magnum Opus yet.

It may be RDR3, if there is one. I do sincerely hope R* listens to some legitimate critiques on this board and elsewhere to truly refine what could be--literally--the greatest video game ever.

Surely though, by playing that many hours yourself both on an offline, you contribute to what you believe is ruining the industry yourself too, no?

I read some crazy stuff here, this being a fine example, lol. 🤣

We all see things differently. I don't believe story mode here is a problem at all going forward, we choose to buy that based on what's on offer. Whereas online is, in my opinion, part of a big problem in gaming right now for the gamers.

Agree with this.

From what I’ve read about RDR O it sounds like all they’ve thought about is driving microtransactions. Rather than creating game modes that are fun first and trusting the recurrent spending will follow.

It was worth a try but I just couldn't get on with it unfortunately. I hope it grows into something far better of course, but for now at least I'll stick with other games.

Just can't get my head around that first impression leaving a bad taste after seeing how GTA:O became such a bit with all playstyles really. Maybe I was buying into the hype but to see content already limited and Dripfed is an eye opener too. It definitely contributes as to why I feel San Andreas was their best game for me (though all the GTA stories are fantastic games all round too) as there was no online to consider or have mixed feelings over. :)

Not even! You can't buy anything with gold bars, 'cept a few horses and gun metal upgrades (unless this changed in last patch...haven't been in RDO but once since the last patch).  I have about 20 gold bars, just from finding them in-game, and not much I can buy with them. (EDIT:) Can't even trade them for cash, last I checked.

Also, R* hasn't done anything with RDO, just changed the player blips (thank god!)and mini map.  That's it!  No SP fixes and very few RDO fixes since release.

So hopefully they are working on a big fix and dlc for SP (I know, I know...), as it seems to me they aren't paying much attention to RDO either.

Anyhow, YES! To date, this is R* greatest work (GTAIV a close 2nd), warts and all!

Good day!

Makes you wonder how they dropped the ball. You'd think they'd have learnt some lessons from the launch of GTA O and had some big scale co-ops like heist and equivalents of free mode businesses - the things that really took it off. But instead it sounds like it's beach bum update grade stuff.
