Did this game feel modern in 2005 and 2006?

Ciao a tutti GTAFrutti!

As you all know LCS was released for PSP in 2005 and next year for PS2, however it is set in 1998 which is 7 and 8 years ago. Of the 3d era games distances between release date and setting year are 12y (SA), 16 (VC) and 22 (VCS). The latter 3 were definitely period pieces and definitely felt that way. However 7 and 8 years doesn't seem to long for me... i mean back in 2006 ppl still used phones from 1998 and cars from same year there were many of them, crt monitors were i believe still common etc

So what you think?

Didn't play it at the time, but I think the portrayal of the internet's growth, the Y2K craze and the teen pop on the radio helps it capture the feel of the late 90s.

I mean, kind of. I don't think LCS was meant to represent a current time period, especially because it was set three years prior. It's a nice pastiche of a time close enough to remember. VC wasn't current either, but this didn't stop the game from being immersive and entertaining. The bonus of having a game set in a specific time is it doesn't really age. It's a snapshot. We can rag on things like that without the worry that things will feel stale. This is how certain aspects of life were at some point, even if they were exaggerated for comedic effect.

Man, I haven't played LCS in years. I remember playing it on my cousin's PSP not long after it came out and I was blown away.

GTA V is set when it was released in 2013, which is 6/7 years ago, and even it's starting to feel like a period piece, with the iPhone 5's and hipster culture.
