Yeah you can lose the regular versions but the specials are a one time buy, very convenient. I actually forgot for the longest time you could even lose lures due to buying the special ones early one and getting used to them.

This is good to know! ☺ I was always afraid of this; I know that by having to cut the line, you lose (or used to lose) the lures, but I've not had to cut my line in ages. I've always been very, very careful since then, but when I first bought the special spinner (that I paid for with gold not long after I bought the rod), I lost it after a friend of mine was paddling around in a canoe, got too close to where I was fishing whilst I had a larger fish hooked, and well, I ended up losing both the fish and spinner when they apparently hit the canoe, lol.

You lose the regular lure if line breaks, but not the special. Are you sure it was the special spinner you lost back then and not a regular lure? Cause you can't lose it, you can only carry 1. I have the Special Spinner Rockstar gifted sitting in my post office unable to be picked up as I already had it. It will probably be there 4 years from now.

I have had the line break many times using the special spinner when the fish gets caught in something but I've never lost it.

I thought it was the special spinner, but I may be mistaken; I ended up buying all of the regular lures back then as well because I was unable to use worm bait at the time (and for nearly two months) because of that weird bug that made them unusable when you ordered them from the catalogue. I'm fairly certain that I got all of the special lures for free from R*, but I don't have an extra special spinner in my mailbox; I know that I had one (and thought that I'd lost at least one) before they were given away for free. It could have been a regular lake or river lure that I lost, but I could have sworn it was the special spinner.

I didn't know the special lures/spinner were immune from breakage though; that's pretty awesome! ☺ Like I said, I've always tried to be extremely cautious since that happened back then, but now I feel that I can relax a little knowing this. 😁

That's weird if was the Special Spinner. Must have been a bug if you lost it.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but there is a killer Smallmouth Bass spot to the right side of Z in West Elizabeth. Go to the bottom road leading to Riggs Station and when it crosses the river go just slightly north by the river and only bass spawn there and it's a really narrow river so they bite fast and reeling is fast too. 20 dollars in 5 mins or so

That is a really nice spot!  Thanks!

Found another reliable and quick spot for Sockeye. This one is right under Cumberland Falls and surprisingly easy to snatch the salmon out from here. Like usual I'm only using the basic River Lure to fish here. No problems at all. I've only had one individual interact with me here so far (This is a relatively new spot for me so not much experience in that part yet) and they were pretty friendly. Mostly sat and watched me fish, did attempt to shoot an arrow through one Salmon I was holding. (Which, I kinda hoped it'd work, would of been cool. It didn't)

Nice little spot. Not terribly far from Valentine for those who'd hit this up at the end of a fishing/hunting haul. You'll need to be a little careful as you're reeling in your catch, if they can get around the rocks that flank the area you'll lose them. Easy way to avoid this is give a half cast instead of a full one. I've caught one every cast so far the past few days, and only have to wait a few seconds or so for a bite.

Picture is a little dark, so sorry for that. But you'll find a nice little bank you can stand on that's ever slightly elevated so you get a little easier of a reel in. I haven't tried any other bait or lures here, so I can't give any ideas on what else is swimming here. I do see some bluegill and the like right up on shore if you're looking for those for any reason.

Overall I like this spot quite a bit compared to a few others I use.

That's the spot I won my first fishing contest from.  There's another area just south of the river crossing downstream that's pretty good as well

If we ever get a second character you'll PROBABLY be able to give the extra one to your alt.

I always thought the perch looked rather interesting with their iridescent blue scales. Having done some research, blue is apparently a very rare colour morph for the American yellow perch. It’s only known in Canada and the Great Lakes, and has only been documented since after WW2. They should be a mix of yellow with greenish stripes.

It scares me how efficient I have become at fishing over time, I rarely come second in the fishing contests since I know the techniques with the lures very well.

Most of the time I'm a good 15-25KG above the nearest player

Is fishing something that's supposed to be difficult? 😂

What are the techniques people use to win freeroam fishing events?

I’m finding them very inconsistent.  I competed in 4 over the past week.  I won one of them (on the islands in flat iron lake), but could barely get a bite in the other 3 - the swamp, and at Hamish’s cabin and the river near that waterfall  to the north east of the map near the widow’s cabin.

I could see the fish, they just weren’t biting.  I never have that problem outside of fishing competitions.  What am I doing wrong?

L & L: Location and Luck 😜

I've mentioned it before, but location is pretty much everything. If there are other people around, find a more secluded area to fish; otherwise, they will not bite. I think the system can only handle so many casting their lines in one small area or the fish get confused or wise up and say, "jokes on you, we know what you're all trying to do here and we're not taking your bait!".

Even if you have to walk around a bit to find a better area, it's worth it. Also, luck though; some just naturally spawn in the areas where the larger fish are and seem to get consistent bites; provided too many others don't invade the area and throw everything off.

Good luck! 😊

So Bard's Crossing is an area a lot of people know is good for fishing but I figured I'd share my spot anyways just for the heck of it. For those that don't know, this spot will let you nab both Largemouth Bass and Steelhead Trout, and fairly quickly. I used both a River Lure and a Special River Lure for those who want to know, both will catch Trout and Bass, though it seems like the Bass don't hit the River Lure nearly as often as the Special River Lure. Could just be me, but you can't go wrong with either so don't stress to much.

The little piece of land sticking out (where my player marker is), is typically where I stand to fish. You have a nice wide area to play around with for casting and you'll catch something every cast if you're just a little lucky. Takes a wee bit longer to get a full load, mostly if you're going for both the Steelhead or the Bass. You also have a couple of other game hanging out. The Ducks should be considered a given, but there is a buck that spawns in the area plus the usual insane amount of pronghorns for whatever reason, hah. So could be a quick hunting area for a handful of cash to those who don't work on huge hauls. I averaged about $65 RDO from a small haul, more tenacious hunters/fishers could net more I'm sure.

YlWtxZR.jpg

You can already see a duck in the photo, plenty more along the shores surrounding the area. The best casting spots I've found all extend from this location (roughly) in a relatively even semi-circle so try wherever you'd like and you should grab something. A little something I also feel like I noticed, casting short casts (close to the shore) seems to give you more Largemouth hits over the trout. Might just be another something that's just me, but felt worth mentioning.

As you can guess, you're near the road and people come through here somewhat regularly but so far, only a handful of people have messed with me while here. Can be a quiet spot for those who are willing to gamble, but you get a cool view of the train going overhead that could make it worth it to. Ambiance or some crap. Even had a NPC on a canoe or kayak. I enjoy this spot.

is yanking a cart for storing multiple large fish still a viable option? i've never done it but i love catching huge fish and i'd be alot more immersed if i didn't have to leave the second i catch something over 4 pounds.

not worried about the nerfed payouts, it'd just make it a more enjoyable experience altogether for me. and if it is still a thing people do, what's the limit before it gets wonky/despawns fish in the cart, if there is one?

So, whats the secret to winning the free roam challenges?  I bought the $20 dollar lures and still cannot catch anything.  I started flicking the right trigger to attract fish and that seems to improve the odds, but I have yet to win this challenge.  It always seems to be a level 20 winning these events.  I am aware you can eagle eye with the fishing pole.

Not sure if there's a particular cart that works better than the rest but I've never had any luck with it.

thanks for the response. had a feeling that wouldn't last, although i was really hoping to do it as some "honest work"

i've done 4 fishing challenges and i've come in 2nd in all 4. first one i realized some dude was ripping muskies out every 20 seconds so i just went over to his corner of the lake (o'creaghs run or whatever) and sure enough, muskies everywhere. the fishing is 2000% different than in free roam, it's far more RNG based.

i'm sure power fishing to get as many casts as possible is the real winning strategy, but you have to atleast know the general spawn areas for fish outside of the competitions. they don't just continuously pop in like in free roam, and going for the biggest fish isn't always the answer. i saw someone else win at o'creaghs run catching sockeye rather than muskie. consistency and numbers, which was actually good to see.

over time i may do some pre-fishing of the fishing competition areas in free roam to find some good spots. just like you'd do in a real fishing tournament in an ideal scenario. i'd have alot more fun doing that if i could actually rack up a couple muskie or catfish on my horse or some form of keep net. i'd rather buy a big keep net to put on the back of my horse than constantly have that empty space. if you're going to let us dedicate the rear portion of our horse to hunting, then give us the same option for fishing. 3 channel catfish is $15 and ~60 pounds, tops (based on the ingame sizes i've seen so far.) not an unrealistic haul and not gaming the system. 5 channel cats would be the same money as 10 sockeye and still weigh far less than even a pronghorn. 1 fish on the back of your horse is flat out insulting.

I highly recommend moving around the map, and using the special lure that attracts all fish sizes. Don’t necessarily focus on catching the biggest fish all the time. Just concentrate on constantly getting one on the line.

Yeah, I tried the special, but got no hits but I wasnt doing the attract fish which seems to make a big difference.  I am going to test it out.  Actually makes alot of sense why lower levels seem to be getting them.  Should you always toss back to catch the same fish over and over?
