Anglers Corner

This is the place to share fishing tips and tricks.

I know us real life anglers go to our graves with our best fishing spots and tactics, but in RDO there's plenty of fish and fishing spots for everyone.

So lets help eachother maximize our fishing.

I'll start with a few angling tips:

Sockeye salmon seems to like inconsistent jerking with the special river lure; quickly reel in (less than one round on the reel at a time), stop and repeat. Those salmons loves alot of spinstops just like irl alot of times.

When the fish is hooked and tired, you can flip the rod up and down with the left stick to reel the fish in quicker.

First thing i do when a fish bites is hooking the fish and immediately reel in fast as hell and push the rod up and down 2 times before letting the fish fight itself tired.

This will give you a good head start landing the fish.

Small fish can just be reeled in without fighting it tired though.

Muskies seems to like really slow reeling with a special lake lure. Slow reeling and short stops. If reeling too fast it seems they can't keep up.

Noob tip: if you use eagle eye while fishing, you can see the fish in the water.

Good idea.

When reeling in, I turn the controller slightly sideways and rotate the stick with thumb and index finger (like you would hold a guitar pick). Much faster reeling and similar to real life.

That's a cool idea. I have to try that next time

Use eagle eye to check the river bank before, during and after fishing. Often times a stray fish or two (salmon, trout) will beach themselves and make for easy pickings.

Lol isn't that the right word? Should it be jigging?

I was just thinking of jerk bait, but what do I know. I'm not a master baiter.

I also tilt the controller so I don't get as tired while handling a big one.

If you get used to how much power you have to put into your cast, using eagle eye you can cast right on top of a fish. Pair this with tapping R2 / RT as soon as the lure hits the water and you can hook a fish within a few seconds.

I've had this be most succesful against salmon and steelhead, 10 fish in less than 2-3 minutes sometimes.

I told Mrs T the blister on the palm of my right hand was from fishing on RDR. She's not buying it.

Shame we can’t noodle for catfish in the bayou. Could’ve even just reused the mechanic and animation of catching yabbies.

That would be cool. Is that an actual real life fishing tecnique?

It's easier when you find a good bubbly spot in a narrow body of water...cuz the reel-in is quick & easy. 😉

In southern US, ja it is. They fish for catfish with their hands. They jam their arms in places they think catfish are hiding in the hopes the catfish will bite on their arm.

instead of pushing R2 (Rt) to hook the fish when it bites, you can hit down on the left analog. when it's hooked you can let off L2 (Lt).

A couple of my go-to spots:

This area is good for steelhead AND largemouth bass So you can knock out two medium sized fish here. I fish where the two rivers meet. The tall banks also eliminate the last 10 feet of reeling.

Sockeye congregate in this small eddy. Since you don't have to cast and reel a 100 feet, you can pull sockeye and small fish out here in a hurry.

The mouth of this creek where it feeds into the river is great for Sockeye and pike. Short reeling and a ton of fish :)

Edit: Also, if you see smaller fish swimming in schools close to the shore, you can run in the water and scare a few up on to land. Saves some small fish catching time.

A new discovery for me lately after some slightly nerve wracking experimentation is that I find it is possible to "bully" all small and medium fish to shore. No need to stop reeling in at any point after the initial bite whether they are fighting or not. I have not lost a fish or a lure yet. Saves a lot of time overall. This using lures by the way.

Also, don't know if it's a speciality she has but my hoss loves to run through fish in shallow water and seems to murder them much more efficiently than others I have had. She can fill a bag with slightly battered fish in no time😁

Failed Again

you don't need to hold left  trigger or right after fish is hooked. I put control on my thigh at angle and reel away.

I have a one handed drop cast works well for close fish,

sent 1 gold bar for secrets😀

Has anyone else noticed that there seems to be a max limit of large fish spawns per player?

Large fish often stops spawning whenever I reach around 4-6 in my wagon.

But if other players are near, more will spawn, but those fish seems 'intended' for that other player, and won't eat your lure. That's a pretty idiotic system imo

Seems to me the higher I am above the water, either a rock or ledge, the easier it is to reel in medium and large fish.

And catch fish like in real life. When you got one on your hook, pull your "hengel" (pffff english word is....) fish stick with a string attached ...(Really dont wont to look it up at google)

Pull & reel in, pull and reel in, its a lot faster

no to tired

Sorry

So fishing rod in Dutch is "hengel"?

I like it, in fact I'm going to start using that word in the U.S. just to see the reactions.

Don't be sorry I'm from Denmark so my english isn't perfect either.

We call a hengel / fish-stick-with-a-string-attached a fiskestang.

Maybe I shouldn't say this so Rockstar isn't gonna fix it, but my second character can't get Lures yet, but she did have a Lake Lure gifted.

I tried for reasons I can't grasp now anymore, but I've been slammin' salmon from Dakota river like a madman.

So, (river)salmon at least will also go for lake lures.

Special spinner has been a lifesaver for some of my characters (some fish and some do other things). Big or small, fish net you cash, so I take 'em all. And it pulls 'em like metal to magnet. Best 3 gb spent for me.

Fishing from this cliff (just south of the Bacchus Bridge) I pulled in lots of salmon, perch and walleye. (Also the reel-in is real easy from up high like that.)
