GTA:VCS Internal Audio Sample Names

Something that I noticed when peering into the audio files for GTA: Vice City Stories for the PS2. Apparently these samples have internal names, and more interestingly IRL car names associated with some of them, like "SFX_CAR_HORN_BMW". Unfortunately a lot of these sample names were truncated to 16 characters, but a few can be guessed based on the names given or from listening to the sound. Some also have weird names that point to a directory like "C:\transer\From " while others have simple names like "ShopBell" or were given the default name PSound gives to unnamed files like "SFX_PS | 00016".

What I did was have PSound (software for ripping audio from Playstation games) scan the SFX#_PS.RAW files.

I also opened up these RAW files in HxD (a hex editor) and noticed a header with the sample name, I would believe that these samples are .VAG formatted (an ADPCM sample format used for the PS1&2).

Yeah, those are some leftover VAG metadata, not actually used by the game. Those that start from SFX use the internal enum name the game would use in its source code, and other extras use part of the path they were located at. Leftover of the listing file information similar to what gta3 and manhunt used.
