New Blip System Info & Discussion

How's everybody liking it so far? It seems alright to me at first glance, gonna have to play with it for a while to really know for sure though.

The difference in visibility range between aggressive and base level players seems to be dramatic. Based on what I observed today, with myself at the St. Denis butcher, regular blips were fading out around the outskirts of town. On the other hand, a duo of dark blipped players (I'm not sure if they were as dark as possible, but they were a pretty deep red) were visible at least as far out as Valentine, on both the mini and full map, which is pretty generous advanced warning. I'm not sure how much further I could have seen them, after watching for 5 minutes or so they still hadn't left Valentine and I was ready to log out.

The big question is, how easy is it to 'reset' that aggressive, dark-blip effect? If it sticks and persists across sessions, after logging out, then it'll do a good job letting us know who to avoid. But if it can be lost as easily as a red blip in GTAO, then this whole system is basically a cloaking device for sneaky attackers.

We need lobby types for specific playstyles, not a one size fits all fix. I can see anyone who legit enjoys PvP Free roam (and not trolling low level or hunters/fishers) being so incredibly bored now.

Absolutely terrible imo. Needs a total revamp. Sessions seem lifeless boring, hardly anyone to interact with outside from the cities and that is just were most the douches stick all day. Has ruined purpose of having a challenging fight with other players over stranger missions as well. I don't mind getting attacked but now all I do is drive carts and shoot some terribly lame npc's who can't aim. Couple that with the hunting nerfs and voila. Disgusted. Don't care about anyone else not agreeing.

Are you saying that blips don't show up for players active on a mission? That seems to defeat the purpose of having them take place in freeroam.

It's not a solution to the need for seperate lobbies we all know that.

With that out of the way, as the game stands currently I think it is a good addition. The inability to see other players adds to the realism for me.  Wondering around rivers or riding through towns it's kinda cool to naturally bump into players. 99% of the time it's a simple drive past on our way. Before we knew way in advance, we tried to avoid routes, we wondered whether to shoot first ask questions later or not (your previous topic on the matter showed how spilt people were on that). It was stressful and made people trigger happy. Now, it seems, blue dots pass by. We hunt, craft and drink together.

I share your concerns on the red target. What exactly have they done to get so red? Is it killing players or NPCs? And yes, how long does it last. I'm also not a fan of the red dot constantly on my mini map. They are two states over!! It makes me keep checking the "big map". It would be much better if it stayed clear until someone is nearby. Too many false positives and someday soon I'll get shot in the back.

Overall, it's way more peaceful. This little bit in Help Section was quite useful...

They do. I seen a posse doing mailbags earlier on my map. They were quite near me at the time though so not sure if it's also proximity based or remains visible across the whole session.

Yeah, proximity based like everything else, in other words if I know my route I just ride from a to b with no hassle, so much fun would play again. From what I seen now only dark red players with a agressive state and their posse have their blips and mission activity displayed even if they are at the other side of the world.

But the best part is that if you actually manage to encounter somebody it's most likely always just a few hundred meters before drop off then you have the usual freeloader who trys a sneaky ambush and if ya unlucky, suceeds. Enough to ruin the already lackluster experience. You simply can't plan ahead anymore with this system.

Stranger mission markers has always been proximity based. You couldn't see if players were doing stranger missions unless you were nearby before either.

Not like now. You have to be even closer to see them, trust me I played all evening and seen enough to witness a change. My friends too, we were all pretty baffled.

Ok if you say so. But the distance seemed pretty normal in my game. Dunno if that was because he was an aggressive player then.

He did seem pretty aggressive when I destroyed his wagon train

If the blip you saw running the mission was an aggro player him and his posse activity will be displayed from even further away then the 150 m. Maybe r* did this so players that tend to attack other players will be more likely to become the victims. Idk still not totally clear this whole system. We will know more in a few days time with hopefully lot more feedback

I didn't see his blip color as he got red dot when he proceeded to shoot me after his mission failed.

I wish I would have had half the fun you had. Because I don't mind the pvp unless it's stupid like just a guy sitting there for a cheap one. I got one of my wagons destroyed near Emerald ranch by some dude popped out of the fence I didn't even really realise there was a player there because these blue things are not well visible while using shops, less than pink ones used to be anyway.

maybe the red dots on the mini map when the player is very far only show if that player is committing crimes/griefing at that time or recently perhaps? i noticed the red dots myself, but for the most part my app and pause menu map are clear the majority of the time. also i check the players menu often *hold triangle to mute* and theres usually 1 to 3 dark named players in the session.

@rusbeckiaWho knows ? after all they are entitled to play even if they are prolly scumbags, just seems odd r* would punish the griefers in that way, usually they lay out the red carpet for them. If thats one of their lowkey anti griefing measures okay because bounty hunters certainly ain't tough enough to deal with these psychos

I noticed red, purple, and blue. I like sniping the red guys while they have no idea where I am lol.

I like it so far, works well for me. I haven't turned even purple yet, though I'm not as big on free mode killing as I am in GTA.

I like it so far, it's much more peaceful. I don't even mind the red blips being constantly visible on the minimap, although as someone else said, I'll probably get caught out at some point thinking the red blip is further away than they are.

I haven't changed from blue even though I've continued my policy of shooting any player hanging around a butcher on sight when I'm loaded with pelts. The highest bounty I've had is $1.50 so far, so it's been worth it.

I absolutely love it. This is what I wanted since day one of Red Dead Online. It simply works beautifully.

The proximity chat is also great. No more loud ass rap being played through the session or some squeaker screaming "ANYBODY GOT A MIC?" over and over again on the microphone. This is much more akin to a survival sort of game like Rust and to me, it fits much better in a game that's supposed to be immersive and takes place in an era where technology was limited. While I didn't like the blips in GTAO being on the map constantly, it was at least forgiveable with the fact that it took place in the 21st century.

They’ve over complicated it

imo. Have everyone appear visible on the map just different colours depending on their aggressiveness.

Ok the more I play the more I really like this new blip system. I wish I knew what aggressive behavior toward NPCs does though: does it turn your blip red if you kill NPCs? I suppose it would but I'm not sure. Anyway this is better than before IMO. I can rest in the woods, or fish, without worry of being targeted & sought out.

I saw Valentine full of dead bodies, could hear gunshots - but the only people I saw were some blue (low visibility) blips. So I assume they'd shot up the town, and still weren't highly visible.

I can't confirm it, but I think it's just attacking players that changes the blips.

Yeah notices this too.

For as far as I know it works like this:

Blips color and visibility: changes by your actions towards other players

Honor: changes by your actions towards anyone (npc/player)

Bounty: changes by committing crimes. A blue blip can easily have a high bounty, as long as they tend to play pve instead of pvp in freeroam.

Is there no way to see your own blip color? Does your name color when pressing down represent your blip color?

Man I am assuming not cause that would be giving them a lot of credit, but that sure would be nice.

I think the no blip system they put in place is outstanding.

Seems ok...I have only been attacked once so far.  And further proves most players are not going to blast you first.  It adds just enough of a consequence that many players think twice or they will look like those red guys way off.

The bounty system is another story.  Which really discourages free roam pvp much more.  As every kill is .25 to pay it off, I think its actually .50 for bounty hunters which I have not seen yet in online, which adds up fast.  The griefers I took on, I had an 8.50 bounty. So even though, I was winning, I still lost.   I tried to 1v1 the guy who started it once I realized how fast I was building the bounty in a 2v1, so I parlayed.  But it parlayed his entire posse, lame.   As expected, it indiscriminately adds bounties to you for revenge killing.

The proximity and colored blips hits the right game balance, PvE works out, but PvP can happen if you're into it. The system could be more creative, less harsh/ more subtle.

Proximity: just go exploring, don't complain "I can't see blips, WAAAA." Work to find friends, maybe they fish where you like to! If you're a griefer, hunt for your prey you lazy SOB.

Posse blips should be a different color, it's not too difficult, but blue posse and blue everyone else is too close.

The red blips distance is too extreme, they should be equal proximity on the minimap. Maybe a little further out, at most double, but not the current long distance. And maybe be shown on the large map but more subtly, if they were more creative... make it like a red tinge/fog over an area that indicates an "outlaw" is roaming in a general area, but not give their precise location at a distance.

I would agree it has started to feel a little more empty, they should work on increasing the player number given the proximity, but again you don't want the wilderness crawling with ton of people.

I am very torn on this - on one side of things, I love that it adds more to the realism because it keeps some player interactivity a bit of a surprise. For example a few people in a posse were riding a wagon for a stranger mission and I decided to fight them to destroy it.  It was fun, but not necessarily worth the pay, kind of felt a little bad afterwards.

But on the flip side, its also very boring if you are a solo player. It kind of reminds me of those SA-MP RP servers where the city is empty with no NPCs and there no blips on the map.

I like the more RP style game play but the restrictions on what we can do and the lack of activities kind of kill it. Why can't we rob stores or banks, if we can just use our damn catalog to buy stuff.
