Resident Evil 7 Quick Slot (PS4)

Can anyone explain how the quick slots work on the PS4?

 

When you collect an item you can press triangle and assign it to one of the four directional slots. I thought this would mean I wouldn't have to go through a menu system every time I wanted to use something, but it doesn't seem to work as I imagined.

 

For instance, one of the first things I picked up after entering the house was some bolt cutters. I assigned them to 'up' on the D-pad. Then when I came across a door which was locked with heavy chains, I looked at the chain and pressed 'up' on the controller but nothing happened. Instead I had to press the action button (x), which brings up the menu, then scroll to the cutters and press X again to use them. I am now aware you get a little floating icon on doors and things saying "X", but I play with the HUD turned off.

 

The quick slot method works for weapons, but not other items.

 

I know I must be doing something wrong, otherwise why are you able to move items to the various slots if you have to bring up the menu the whole time?
