DentureDynamite
About a month or more ago, I stumbled onto a couple of bandits in-game; basically, two outlaws on horseback independent of existing gangs. They were just sitting on their horses south of Twin Stack Pass... after killing them, I noticed their NPC names (when picked up) were "Bandit", which is what made me think Rockstar was testing them for a brief period of time, as I haven't seen them since. AFAIK, the "Bandit" name is not used for NPCs in gang hideouts or ambushes; the latter are always associated with the O'Driscolls or Skinners, etc.
yeezy203
I've been encountering bandits for a while now usually they try to ambush me but then I just kill them all. One thing that was weird though one time I started a stranger mission to steal a wagon or something. I killed a deer then a random NPC started shooting at me it scared the hell out of me. I was trying to get bad honor then so it could have been them testing a bounty system? DentureDynamite
DentureDynamite
^^ Hmm; sounds like you're referring to "regular" ambushes, which are preset to certain locations around the map. But I wouldn't rule the testing part out--especially with the update dropping this Tuesday. The dashed line boundary that appears around a town when you get a wanted level has been in place for quite a while, so it wouldn't be surprising to see bounties being tested "live" any time now... even though IMO live testing should probably be done in a closed group of players. But, back to bandits--my understanding of bandits vs. ambushes is: Ambushes only happen at set locations and times; bandits could (theoretically) attack you anywhere, at any time. Ambushes consist of maybe 10-15 outlaws, all linked to a gang or territory, such as the O'Driscolls or Skinners; bandits are maybe 1-2 NPCs, and wouldn't be linked to any of those. I love the idea of bandits, as they would keep everyone on their toes, and add some excellent spontaneity to the game. They wouldn't have to be limited to outside of towns/cities; there could be some roaming around St. Denis as well... FuriousHere
I met bandits once when I was roaming around on my horse. They looked like normal NPC's so I tried to kill them, but one of them took out a revolver and started shooting at me. When I looted them it said ''Bandit'. Also one time I've seen a legendary alligator near Thieves' Landing, some guy skinned it and placed it on his horse. It was marked as red paw icon on the map. DentureDynamite
Quote When I looted them it said ''Bandit'. ^^ Excellent! So I'm not the only one that has seen them. Good stuff. I'm surprised no YT'rs have talked about them appearing in-game yet... lol They're a new game mechanic that have the potential to be very interesting. I had that mission at Stillwater Creek, and went up against an Alligator who could tank Bolt Action Rifle rounds better than The Bull Gator is single player. ThaBirdCoot
Yes, encountered them at the same location if I remember correctly. Edited February 20, 2019 by ThaBirdCoot DentureDynamite
Assblaster
I've come across them twice: one band ambushed me northeast of Valentine as I was headed for the cattle farm north of the oil fields; the second attack was southwest of Valentine, south of Downes Ranch. Second bunch of bushwhackers almost did me in, shooting at me from all angles. I wish we had more of these kinds of random encounters, unexpected fun. yeezy203
Oh ok, yes in that case it was a bandit for sure. He randomly shot at me and was the only one around. DentureDynamite
Coleco
Yep, I've bumped into a few at choke points on the map. Pretty cool to be honest, even if sometimes they seem a little overpowered but even then dealing with bandits is far, far more enjoyable than being set upon by other players. Worth a little bit of xp and a chance to loot bodies afterwards too. Maybe for the full immersion-breaking experience R* can give the bandit gangs really edgy or unreadable names and Varmint rifles when they one-shot you DentureDynamite, U Carmine, ALifeOfMisery and 1 other
U Carmine
I came across 'em twice or three times today, while just riding around long distances. I was doing 20 treasure hunts and going between story mission markers. In one area, there was a bridge. A wooden bridge. And it looked like there was a cart with wooden thing that acts like trip wire. My horse legs collided with the wooden thing from cart and I fell off. Then bandits appeared. I think it was an ambush. But it's pretty cool. Them setting up traps. DentureDynamite and Coleco

Better think again, you milksops. I just peek enough around the corner and if I see the cart, I just go hitch my horse and send them packing on the express. Then it’s salmon city for this cowboy. I'd still love to see some quicksand--would be very easy to implement, and even in real life, you can't sink further than your waist (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quicksand#Properties): "Quicksand has a density of about 2 grams per milliliter, whereas the density of the human body is only about 1 gram per milliliter. At that level of density, sinking in quicksand is impossible. Descending about up to the waist is possible, but not any further." 4eyedcoupe
^^^Hmmm....Interesting. I just saw a story on the news the other day about someone getting stuck and how rare it was. They mentioned the last few times it has happened throughout the world and one of the more recent times(few years ago) in China IIRC, a man was rescued after being stuck up to his nose!
