None of the popular games that monetise cosmetics stay popular cause people think new skins are enough to keep a game alive. New cosmetic stuff comes with content updates. In theory it works like this: New content update with new cosmetics to buy > people come back to play new content > people buy cosmetics to support devs or just to look cool while playing new content Fortnite is probably the best example of how to do this, but it's pretty much the standard model for all these "games as a service" type games now.
