Next week the Red Dead Online Beta frontier expands with all new Free Roam Events, a host of new Showdown Modes, and new Races coming as part of its first title update on Tuesday, February 26. This update also brings the first batch of new Weapons, Clothing, and Emotes for your character, as well as a series of improvements and balances detailed last week. Also starting on Tuesday, February 26 look out for new content and special promotions weekly.

New Gameplay
New additions will include the Fool’s Gold Free Roam Event, where players will compete to control an equal parts gaudy and protective suit of Golden Armor. Fight to take down the armor wearer to earn points and claim it as your own, then turn the tables and earn points for kills while wearing the armor.

Competitive Challenges gets a fresh catch with Fishing Challenges. Fishing Challenges are broken out by type, opt in to the challenge and you’ll receive all the equipment necessary to compete including the rod as well lures and bait specific to the challenge type, whether it’s crickets for a river challenge, crayfish for the swamp or worms for lakes. Then head to an appropriate body of water to take part – also, you’ll be made safe from the nuisance of trigger-happy outlaws while you are taking the challenge. Catch the highest weight total of fish to win.

Also on the way are three new Showdown Modes where players and teams compete to capture and deliver bags, steal loot from each other and survive. Stay tuned for more details around Up in Smoke, Spoils of War and Plunder. Races will also see a new variation with Target Races where players shoot targets from horseback to pass checkpoints as they race along a track to the finish line.

New Weapons
B.D. and Co. is turning out the high grade, high capacity Evans Repeater rifle. The Rare Shotgun is D.D. Packenbush’s latest variation of the powerful double-barreled longarm. Sporting an antique style faded brass finish and an artfully adorned stock. Both weapons will be available via the Wheeler & Rawson Catalogue and local Gunsmiths.

New Clothing and Emotes
A wide range of new clothing to further customize your character – from the snake adorned Diamondback Hat to the fur trimmed Rutledge Vest – is also on the way with new Outfits, Jackets, Boots, Coats, Gloves, Hats, Vests and more. In addition to all the clothing that will be available for purchase at your leisure, keep an eye on the shops and the Catalogue for unique special items that will come and go. A variety of new Emotes is also on the way – featuring everything from greets to reactions and taunts.

PS4 Early Access Content

In addition to new Target Races, PlayStation 4 players will have early access to Open Target Races where you compete in an open space to take out the most targets on horseback. PS4 players will also get early access to the Jawbone Knife, a unique melee weapon with a handle artfully carved from the remains of a slain animal’s jaw, as well as a range of new clothing options and 3 new Emotes.

Bonus XP This Week
Play the Red Dead Online Beta all this week to earn 20% more XP on all activities ahead of the launch of these new updates on February 26. And be sure to look out for new bonuses, giveaways, promotions and content updates weekly, as we continue to build, balance and evolve the world of Red Dead Online.

Update details:

Quote

The next set of updates and new features is set to be added to the Red Dead Online Beta on February 26th as we implement many new improvements and enhancements to the game’s open world, including a new Law and Bounty system, weapons balancing, changes to player blips on the mini-map and more. Read on for details about these changes and stay tuned next week to learn more about some of the other new content coming in this update.

Player Visibility
As part of our response to community feedback on how to minimize certain types of destructive player behavior, we’ve made some changes to the way player blips will appear on the map.

Firstly, we’re reducing the visibility of blips over long distances – your map position won’t display to other players unless you are nearby (within 150 meters) and if you are slightly further away you will only appear when firing your weapon.  Players in other towns or regions, for example, won’t be visible. This prevents players from being repeatedly targeted across the map at long distances.

We’re also introducing a new system that highlights overly aggressive players. If your style of play becomes more hostile, your map position (and the position of your Posse members) will become more visible to other players with a progressively darkening dot that incrementally shifts from blue to dark red. Your visibility increases through bad deeds such as attacking and killing other players or their horses outside of a structured mode, Free Roam Mission, event or competition, and the shorter the time between bad acts, the more your visibility increases. Shift back to a more righteous path and your visibility will fade over time.

We’re also introducing Posse-wide Parleys and improving Feuds. You’ll soon be able to initiate Parley that applies to your attacker’s entire Posse after just a single kill. Alternatively, if you’d rather challenge your opponent, you can initiate a Feud, Posse Feud or Leader Feud after one kill, quickly turning a dispute into a timed mini-deathmatch for rival players to fight out amongst themselves in Free Roam, earning points for each kill on the opposing player.

Bounty Hunters & Law Balancing
At the same time, players who have racked up high bounties will have a chance to be beset by NPC Bounty Hunters who will attempt to kill them and collect their reward.

Criminal behavior will have bounty values and honor consequences that scale based on the severity of the crime. For example, killing another player can incur a higher bounty, while assaulting townsfolk or animal cruelty could give you a lesser bounty if the crime is reported, while lower level crimes like looting and ransacking will only decrease your honor.

If your bounty exceeds a certain threshold and Bounty Hunters take notice, you will be wanted dead and alerted to their pursuit. The higher your bounty, the greater your value and the more difficult the pursuit becomes for you and your Posse.

Daily Challenges
We will also be adding a variety of Daily Challenges to take on across the Red Dead Online Beta. Complete individual objectives that cover every aspect of life on the frontier to earn Gold Nuggets and XP. Challenges will range from foraging for herbs, selling items at a Fence, hunting and skinning animals, clearing hideouts, winning Feuds and so much more. These Daily Challenges will continue to expand and evolve over time bringing specialty challenges and rewards, streak bonuses and more.

Other Fixes and More
Your feedback has been invaluable so please keep it coming. In addition to these updates we are planning to address several additional changes based on community feedback received thus far - select weapons will be re-balanced including the Varmint Rifle, which will have its accuracy brought more in line with other longarm weapons; voice chat will be reduced to work at closer proximity, and while fixes to horse cargo are numerous and ongoing we plan to introduce some improvements to making pelts and carcasses more persistent after death or respawning.

We will have more details on additional content in the February 26th update next week. We are excited about the future of Red Dead Online and look forward to sharing lots more in the weeks and months ahead.

Meanwhile, there are chances to earn more XP to rank up ahead of February 26th. Playing in a Posse will bring benefits like earning increased XP in Free Roam Missions and Free Roam Events. Posse up this week to earn twice as much increased XP on these activities, and next week earn 20% more XP across all activities in the Red Dead Online Beta.

Was pretty much confirmed we were getting new clothing with last weeks splash photo. Interesting to see we're actually getting a new gun with the Evans Repeater. Seems a bit lazy to tout the Rare Shotgun and Jawbone Knife as something new though, but I suppose all those extra single player weapons would just be sitting there unused.. of course Rockstar would have to trickle them out though.

Let's see how many bug fixes they actually include, and how many bugs appear with this update though. I still can't access my Ultimate Edition clothing pieces, so let's hope they fixed the ability to use certain clothing items if you bought them from the catalog or adding all these things are just going to present more issues.

It's actually going to be more than I expected. Idk if it'll make me turn the game on today, but it's better than nothing.

I'm all for the new clothes, just a bit bummed. By the wording, it sounds like they will purchasable with money from the catalogue rather than being craftable with a trapper. Wonder what the special items that come and go are, clothing probably? I wonder if it will be a type of addition announced with event weeks or if R* will just add the items in without saying anything.

It sounds like they're doing limited time sales for some cosmetic items, which eh, whatever. Fishing challenges could be fun, but I dunno why they're bothering with free roam events tbh, no one plays them and they're a pain in the arse to get in and out of. They remind me of early GTAO content, just too much hassle to be worth it.

Considering it'll be 3 months since launch when this goes live, this being the first major update is uhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Kinda cheap to add SP guns to online and call them "new"

Still, seems like a solid update which is way overdue. Now add free aim.

Sounds good to me. Sure it took much longer than it should've to get here but I'm just glad we've almost arrived somewhere a little better. It's new stuff and I like the sound of all of it, so I'm pleased.*

There's not much from todays info I'm all that hyped about.

Fishing challenges could be cool.

The Evans Repeater might be a class topper, I'm thinking R* might go down the same route as with cars in GTAO, wait until we've bought what's available, then release a new best in class item, we'll see.

Jawbone knife is right up my alley, no complaints there.

The new clothing looks as though it might be more trapper style clothing, which is again my kind of thing, although I am disappointed that it looks as though it will simply go on sale rather than having to hunt specific pelts.

The "unique special items" is a pretty meh concept as far as I'm concerned, although as and when things I like become available I'll buy into it.

Ugh... More devs doing Limited Time items. Not a fan of Fallout 76's Limited Time Atom Shop items, and I'm not going to be a fan of it here either. Limited Time items for holidays, sure. Limited Time items to push premium currency sells, pass.

I was really hoping we'd get part 2 of A Land of Opportunity. At the rate they're going I might finally be done with R*'s Online games after ~9 years.

New FR events; weak. New Showdown modes; weak. New races; weak. PS4 players get "early access"; f*cking uber weak.

As an X1 player, not going to be giving up any of my money for gold if sh*tball PS4 users keep getting early access to stuff. Where does that benefit end for them? You're crew, working on this game, is a f*cking group of paste eating, helmet wearers.

If the original trailer for the first set of 'PS Exclusive' items are to be believed, it's only going to be content from four updates. So far, I think, this is the 'second' batch of exclusive content after the Grizzlies/Red Arabian/etc.

Video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKTQJ0SnyLg

And it says this at the end:

e8b2477bca.jpg

At least it's only a month early, and we Xbox players still get them eventually unlike some content in other games. And even the original Red Dead 1 items (Walton's Gang Outfit and exclusive gang hideout) are still technically PlayStation exclusive unless you go out and buy the Game of the Year edition.

Unless it's still forthcoming, Rockstar still needs to get raw and real about whether invite-only sessions and free aim will be part of RDO--and if so--exactly when.

The longer they ignore these two highly-requested features, the more players will be writing them off.

Aye the lack of transparency around this will only increase frustration for players. If it aint coming just say.

I agree they should probably give some info one way or another here for free aim lobbies & private lobbies, but I'm guessing they really have no plans of implementing different lobby types therefore why mention it when they can not say anything and continue to string players along.

Still no invite only sessions though? That’s pretty disappointing - but then again we should expect as much from the game at this point. Hopefully the eight people who are still happily playing RDO regularly will enjoy this.

" Stay tuned for more details around Up in Smoke, Spoils of War and Plunder "

Sounds like they might be dripfeed into March and added week by week. If so, probably some weapons/clothes/etc are too.

So, same old then. I think I'll start my 2nd playtrough of story mode, maybe do a 100% while at it until all the stuff that is broken gets fixed. Can't cope anymore with all the glitches and bugs especially, since my friends are leaving the game in flocks, at least together you could somehow overlook the issues by creating a bit of your own diversity.

New items are good. But how long with they pretend all the requests for invite only sessions and the Trapper aren't being made.

The Evans rifle looks to be the New Model variant, specifically a Cavalry Carbine model. Hopefully it’ll have the more accurate 26 round capacity this time rather than the 22 of last time.

Curiously, this makes it the only centrefire ‘repeater’ class in the game. The Henry and Winchester both use the same rimfire cartridge, and the Spencer is a rimfire as well. This means the Evans *should* deal more damage at longer ranges. And be more accurate. I’m rather curious to see if they correctly modelled the somewhat tedious reload. You’d have to insert a cartridge, work the lever, insert the next cartridge, work the lever, insert the next cartridge, so on. If you missed a round, you’d end up with a gap in the magazine. Which means you couldn’t just fire off half the capacity and then reload on top of that. You’d have to insert a round every time you fired, or you’d have to cycle through the ENTIRE 26 round magazine to get back to the start.
