Is this truly the new reality at R*? Will we only see GTAs and RDRs going forward?

I feel the same way with Benzies. After these guys left, the company started going a bit downhill. Had they stayed, we would probably have better updates in GTAO and less futuristic aka Saints Row (whatever it's called) crap that we have now.

They maybe release a new IP or sequel to existing games but after RDRO and GTAO won't give any profit anymore because it can take focus from them. This can take several years of only content updates for RDO and GTAO.

Apparently the futuristic and floaty games are what work these days, and the best example is Fortnite and most recently Apex Legends. With or without Leslie, R* was bound to go that way for GTAO to stay competitive and it'd be a hard job to replicate the same success with RDRO, unless they again go futuristic. The parent company, T2, should probably think about releasing their own BR game through their 2K Games label in order to capture some of the market share. R* is still very good as proven by the story campaign of RDR2, so hopefully they continue. I'd be more cautious about their future if the Housers and other names like Garbut left. Dan Houser has always been the primary writer of their games, so they will definitely feel different after him.

Lets post that quote with the full context, eh?

Quote

"I think we are in a new dawn of the industry where there is a lot of cool sh*t happening in terms of the technology, not just in the console world, but with how games are published, the technology out there," he said. "I think virtual reality and augmented reality are amazing things. We're just in the baby steps of that stuff.

"If I had stayed at Rockstar it would have been more GTAs, more RDRs and less of this other stuff going on out there right now."

He's clearly talking about wanting to be involved with some of the other things going on in the industry at the moment, such as VR/AR, also maybe hinting at self-publishing as well? So he could be going to do something smaller scale.

That being said, I'm not surprised any time I hear a veteran dev has left the studio these days. Five+ years on RDR2, their next game is probably GTA VI which is another 5+ years of development game, who knows after that. Unless they're leaving to retire most veteran devs leave studios they've been at for years to create or be involved in new IP. There's only so much you can take doing the same stuff over and over again.

People move on, dude worked there for 20 years. Can't blame him for exploring other opportunities.

And it's likely true that we will mostly just get more GTA's and RDR's, considering how damm long Rockstar takes to make a new game these days.

Yeah if Dan Houser leaves then we will have a problem. Say what you will about his writing but his style is overall unique, unlike most video game writers where it doesn't matter who wrote it since there is no real identity & it's generic

Thats just online, gta online was benzies idea in the first place. RDR2 is a masterpiece and so far they aren’t adding retarded sh*t into online so

I appreciate R* for their experimental, smaller scaled games from the past and it saddens me that they will likely never bring us these sort of games again.

Jeez, imagine going from rockstar to some obscure shovelware developer in a third world country.

Hopefully he can turn it around, maybe even compete with rockstar, but time will tell.

Kinda funny how he talked about wanting to do stuff with VR and R* added some VR in LA Noire.

That does suck though. Wasn't he the same guy who got in trouble for sexual harassment with another R* employee at a club? Found the article. He made some guy sit on his lap. Well no more clubs and parties and being treated like a big shot for him now lol.

Didn't know that! Wow, what a dick, and if I should put myself in Rockstar employees' shoes, then I won't miss him

Like the party culture at Rockstar tho, that's how you roll 🤟

Feel like I'm one of the few who likes their patience when it comes to releasing new games. An annual release of a GTA game would oversaturate the series.
