I’ve seen threads on GTA IV as well as V and SA in relation to this, so I thought I would do this with VC. And yes, I’ll do it with III as well, but either today or tomorrow. I rate it about a 9/10 as it’s my second favorite GTA, beating beaten by only to IV/EFLC. What about YOU GUYS?

6/10

Pros

It captured the time period well & it has an impeccable 80s soundtrack.

Nice variety of melee weapons.

Cons

cliché predictable & boring story filled with fairly one-dimensional characters.

Tommy is extremely boring & has the personality of the baked potato.

Losing health falling off bikes.

Horrible camera.

Vice City is overly dense & compact and lacks the living atmosphere that Liberty City captured.

Playing on a console the auto-aim feels awful.

Missions which involve remote control planes...bleh 🤮

Vice city is alright, it lacks the charm & nostalgia I get from III, it doesn't have the scope & ambition of San Andreas or the quality story of IV or the extremely well-written & original script of V...but it was a good game for its time.

My 3rd Favorite GTA. Brilliant Soundtrack, Atmospheric Map and 80s Setting. Brilliant Dialogue and Characters. Decent gameplay. A bridge from 3 to SA.

It is somewhat sad, yet it's completely understandable and objectively appropriate to measure things by their ' technological superiority ', especially when it comes to computers or closely tied gaming industry.

Vice City, just like any game from 3DU, except maybe for LCS or ADV, is simply ' too big ' to be measured by such ' degrading mesurment '. Objective one, but still demeaning. Why? Simply because these games never flexed their muscles in that sense - being technically superior than others and all - not even when they came out. Everything in Vice is so perfectly interwoven together despite being simple. Open world, story, mechanics, visuals, you name it. Totality of small and simple things that make that game so grand, something that cannot be measured by technological input or parameters. When you dissect everything and try to look at things separately, like driving mechanics, e.g, you'll see that it's nothing special, even under par comparing it to games from that time, let alone something modern. But, you'll completely forget about it as soon as you take even one casual drive or complete one mission and you'll see that it somehow fits there perfectly.

Even its visuals - fantastic and colorful atmosphere - never meant to be taken as a final word of graphical and visual achievements, but rather to appeal to our imagination with its comic book alike appearance. If you ask me, that's true definition of art right there. Superior graphics of today is inevitably going to be questioned tomorrow, or even be laughed at. But if it's beautiful, rather than just 'good looking' according to visual standards, you won't even have to make any comparisons in that sense. Only handful of games can be praised for achieving this feat.

10.

I know it's got it's flaws and the subsequent GTA's maybe technically superior, but as it was my first open world game, it was an absolutely magical experience for me. That experience of exploring VC  and being able to go wherever you wanted(mostly), driving as fast as you can ,brawling with peds and getting into massive shootouts with police for the first time, with graphics that young me thought was gorgeous, was an experience that can't be recaptured personally (I know you can do all of what I said in other GTA's as well but VC was my first so it was all very new and special to me). Add to that the amazing soundtrack and 80's atmosphere, and a badass (to young me atleast) protagonist in Tommy V, and I thought then that it was the best game ever. I dont think it's the best now, but its still really special personally, so I give it a 10. Totally not a biased rating.

Great game for it's time but hasn't aged very well.

I liked the atmosphere, radio stations, great voice actors and some of the characters.

But the story was subpar and I always hated the VC map design and still do.

While i don't get as much enjoyment playing VC as GTA 3 or SA but still I like it more than GTA IV.

I love Vice City, the cars and helicos' handling is excellent, I love the soundtrack, Tommy Vercetti is a very good badass main character, the difficulty is much better dosed than in San Andreas and the game is definitely still worth it but the city feels too small with a rushed western island, many very interesting parts of the story are dramatically under or not exploited at all, the taxi missions are very boring compared to 3 and San Andreas, the paramedic sub-mission sucks as much as in 3 and I surely forgot many other positive and negative points.

GTA VC would be even better if Rockstar took more time to develop it even if its quality is very good by itself given the short time it took to create it.

8/10. Back in the day it was 9.easy, but it has aged badly. The map design is terrible, story is short. Lance needed more time. Physics are terrible and the cops were horrible even back in the day. Great music, good mission variety and interesting characters.

Will always be the best 3D era GTA. Its shortcomings I feel are fairly minor. Improved on GTA III in every major way in just a year and it doesn't feel as try hard as San Andreas while still remembering its roots. Brilliant protagonist, story is good (It's by no means a masterpiece. Serviceable though by 3D era standards), great soundtrack, excellent variety of interiors, cool map etc.

I'll always have some sentimental attachment to it since it's set in my birth year.😎

A solid 9. What prevents it from making it a 10 for me is its rather poor map (many vast empty areas, the western part of the city isn't as detailed and looks just plain grey and ugly in many places, the oddly shaped airport, etc., understandable given it was made in only 9 months) and the poorly aged controls (barely acknowledging the existence of the second stick on consoles, awkward aiming on PC with delay towards shooting).

I love Vice City. But in this gen, it aint nothing without mods. So 7/10.

To be honest, VC was legend back in 2000s days, but all I see now it's just GTA VC: Zombies - GTA VC 2, and other crap mods. I would rate it like that because we are in the HD universe and era, my love in 3D games is gone and only looking into the most graphics/performance games, I didn't play it since 2016 though.

Liberty-TG

9/10

An amazing game, the oly issues are the RC missions, can't swim, the police intelligence and logic and the Airport and Fort Baxter are mostly unused.

All missions were good or challenging, one of the few GTA's with 0 boring missions, the map is good, the soundtrack is maybe the best one of all GTA's,and improved everything from GTA III so I can't complain much about some things.

10/10 when it came out tbh, it was my favourite game ever and I loved the city, soundtrack and story.

But now it's aged a lot and I can see some flaws so it's a 9/10 overall and still my second favourite GTA game

Since the thread says "now", I'd say about 8/10.

Story is pretty cool, but chapters after Diaz' death could've been written far better. The atmosphere is my favorite just after IV's and TLAD's, and seems like it really top notched the vibe of the gritty side of 80's Miami. The shooting mechanics and driving are obviously dated, and after playing GTA IV and V, the core gameplay starts feeling lacking due to the absence of features like the cover system, 360 degree drive-by, swimming, climbing ladders and grabbing objects.

El Penguin Bobo

9/10. One of my favorite GTA games followed closely by IV, EFLC and V, but it definitely doesn't a deserve a 10. No game does in my opinion.

Looking back at it now and playing the HD era games like GTA IV or V, you can see that some of things in the game are really outdated, like the map for example. The first island was alright, but mainland felt pretty rushed. If they took more than 9 months to make the map, it would look fine.

The no swimming thing can also get very annoying. I never had a problem with it, but playing it now...

Other than that, it's still a great game and I still prefer it over SA as much as I loved that game.

Lonely-Martin

8/10.

Just recently replayed this on PS4, it is an absolute classic and in its day, the best game I'd played. The controls are so much better than III too, the way the camera pans as we move about is much better than previously.

The assets are great, there's still a few tricky missions in there too. The firefighter and paramedic can be for sure. Cracking music here from the 80's too. Plus, the chainsaw and katana, need I say more, lol.

The thing that I least enjoyed as I do like to get trophies is The Godfather rank Take the Canoli. It does, lol. But where there's a will, there's a way.

A worthy replay for £6 I felt. Great game. Great memories too.

The biggest pro for me is the atmosphere. Vice City Stories, for example, had a dark story set in a much more glitzy and glamorous Vice City. While this isn't a knock for VCS, the story doesn't feel as appropriate for a place like the much brighter Vice City presented in that game. Here, in the original Vice City, everything fits together perfectly and while Vice City is still glamorous, you explore its dark underbelly as the game progresses.

However, I took a point off because of the rather underdeveloped map and I felt like the story kind of lost its footing after the killing of Diaz, and I wish there was still a line of main missions you can complete to progress the story.

That's what I thought too. It was supposed to feel dark and kinda grimy, but the overdone humor, silliness, as well as the overdone neon lights and overly bright lighting held it as well as the atmosphere back. That's why there's got to be a balance between the narrative and how it's delivered.

Exactly. Also, I actually classify GTA Vice City as a "dark but colorful" type of game when it comes to me, or as @SonOfLiberty describes it, somewhat "GTA III with palm trees" (and neon lights, I might add). Yes, it did feel very lighthearted when compared to GTA III (or even GTA IV to some extent), especially with its oceanic setting and 80's neon lights, but the overworld's time cycles and the overall atmosphere didn't feel that bright, and the humor throughout the story was delivered just right, in a way that didn't feel almost nonexistent (like in GTA III's story), nor too shoved in our faces (like in the stories of GTA V, The Ballad of Gay Tony, Vice City Stories, Liberty City Stories and to some extent San Andreas), which only GTA IV and The Lost and Damned top notched among the successor titles IMO.

It's unfortunate there weren't as many comedic moments throughout the story but I think Rockstar remedied this by giving a sense of how f*cked up Liberty City is through the peds and in-game radios. It was interesting to see all the funny sh*t with Maria and Toni in Chatterbox.

9/10. Amazing atmosphere and the best soundtrack in the series. Improvement over GTA III in most ways, but I have always preferred the map of 3D Liberty City and the main story is too short (Rub Out is already the 15th mission if no extras are done).
