How long does a GTA “last”?

Recommended Posts

PaddsterG2k3

How long do you realistically play a GTA (single player only) for before you’re done with it? What would you say is your lifecycle for the games? How many play throughs can you go through before it feels stale? Does this differ from game to game or do you feel there is a fairly standard experience for each?

Still to this date I play almost every GTA(except for the top down ones) whenever I feel the "nostalgia attack". I pretty much boot up San Andreas every month just to derp around for a while. I replay III, VC, IV(+EFLC) and V too. It's probably the only series I play this much. So the lifecycle is pretty much "infinite" for me. Maybe the 80 year old me would still play this series as well. Whenever I'm feeling down after a hard days work I boot up a GTA Game. Most games feel like games to me but to me GTA is a second home.

I have played SA the most. V is the second. I can't believe how much I have played that game since 2013. I've probably hit double digits for those two games in terms of playthroughs. Not to mention the countless hours in free roam. IV is a special GTA though. I played it until 2009 but when TBOGT came out I dumped it for a while. Revisited it before V again. Then dumped it after V and came back to it in 2015 and I gotta say I respect it more than before.

In short they each have their unique feeling which is why I keep switching up and coming back. Probably would've gotten bored by now if they were all similar.

To answer the OP’s question, GTA IV/EFLC in particular can NEVER go stale no matter how many times you play it. The GTA series in general is basically to the gaming industry what artists such as Metallica, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Cash, etc. are to the music industry. What makes GTA so much better than the average generic Call of Duty game in my personal opinion is that the games actually have staying power. Call of Duty games are made every year, but once a new one comes out, the previous one is left in the dust, already deemed as “old”, and is rarely even played anymore. The problem I have with a game series coming out with a new game every single consecutive year is that in my honest opinion, it just doesn’t make the game series special. GTA, on the other hand, is a completely different story. As I’ve said time and time again, IV/EFLC still hold up to their greatness even to this day. Same goes for III, VC, SA, and to a lesser extent, V. People still play those GTA games and are interested in them, thus one of the many reasons as to why the series ultimately wins.

I'd probably never get bored of any 3d and hd gta, not even gta2 while the rest (even tho gta1, london69&61 and ctw are great) doesnt have that much of a replayability value to me even tho they had awesome and interesting features, mainly because either they're too hard (2d games) or i can't get that much used to playing on handheld consoles (ctw), i have problems with playing games on mobile in general too. Also the cars in ctw are too low poly compared to the rest of the environment to enjoy more than gta2

It depends on each game.I think the GTA that I played the longenst is GTA SA,I played it regularly from around 2006 to around 2013,played through the story somewhere between 5 and 10 times, and I still play it occasionally and have fun in freeroam.

I still play the top down ones. GTA is a game where one doesn't need a reason to play, and in that GTA is a great time waster when you've got an hour to go before work. And each game has their own unique thing to offer that makes each game special in a way. SA for the '90s theme and RPG features, VC for '80s. GTA3 for classic GTA in a 3D setting, IV for euphoria and V for all of the insane vehicles. 2 for the retro-futuristic theme, 1 for score attempts. London for '60s theme.

For me GTA has a longevity that I've found in only three other series. Sims, SimCity and Elder Scrolls.

For me it varies game to game. San Andreas takes me one year to complete, every playthrough. Sometimes it takes even longer than a year. My last playthrough was like... 18 months.

Other GTAs take me average 3-5 months to complete.

GTA SA and GTAIV I could play eternally without them feeling stale or without me ever getting bored. But I have to take a break before each playthrough. Other GTAs tend to get boring after a while. But if I haven't played something for years or decades it is a joy to rediscover, like GTA3. LCS, VCS for example.

I'm fairly OCD completionist, so with the newer games it can be months. GTA is one of the few series I play that gives Paradox games a run for their money in hours played.

Basically until I can't stand playing them anymore because of the controls being so outdated and awful. This is the reason I doubt I will go back to III, VC and SA anytime soon, despite me loving each of them and VC being my favourite of the series. I feel more frustration than enjoyment with them now, unless I park my car and listen to the god tier VC radio, but I have the collection for that.

For IV and V there's no expiration date so far. I'm happy to go back and playthrough them once I feel enough time has passed since I last did, unless I'm busy with any newer games.

The GTA is definitely my most favourite series/franchise and I have played it the most by far. In fact, most Rockstar games are special for me. These days I rearly play any other games by other developers... SA was my favourite game by a wide margin when it first released, until it was eclipsed by IV. It’s actually very difficult to go back playing SA after GTA IV, as it feels so dated and cartoony.

GTA V was and still is a great game, but the physics aren’t to my liking. Sure the graphics are loads better and the map is bigger, but that’s about it. I still enjoy it though and it’s one of my most played games of the decade. These days I play both IV and V, sometimes even the cult classic San Andreas, but to me it has unfortunately aged quite badly now...

Bought the GTA IV again couple of months ago for Xbox One X and the frame rate is quite stable, a lot better than the 360/PS3 days.

At the moment RDR2 is the game I enjoy the most, in fact the game of this decade for me. Better than V.

But yeah, Rockstar Games for the win. It’s the only developer I give my time of day these days...

Depends on how mod-friendly a specific Rockstar game is and how many memories I have attached to one. Like, I still play GTA San Andreas from time to time due to its massive modding community and pretty much unlimited possibilities of modding. Same story with GTA V. Despite GTA IV isn't the best for modding (very unstable, crashes for no specific reason), I don't refuse to play it due to being my favourite GTA game so far.

3D games five times through, with time in between, so probably 10 years. 2D games only one playthrough, so about six months. GTA IV 5 times through, with time in between, 10 years. GTA V So far three times through, so far 5 years.

I try to play through all the titles I own at least once a year and aim for 100% in the 3rd era games when I do. They simply never get old and remain challenging and endlessly fun no matter how many years pass.

GTA IV is the only GTA I still play regularly. I've finished it about 12 times and while I don't always finish every save I start I still play it to mess around. No joke since 2008 I think the longest I've gone at a time without playing it is 2 months. It's like a drug. Once I was hooked I could never let it go and hence why I'm the uber GTA IV fanboy around these parts.

As for the others I finished GTA V 4 times, but haven't played through it since 2015. Occasionally I might play it, but can't see myself ever playing it through again from start to finish since the story gets old about halfway through. I haven't finished a 3D era GTA in about 15 years. Again I still play them occasionally, but nothing more than really just to mess around. Too dated gameplay wise IMO.

So GTA IV has stayed on top all this time. I know the game like the back of my hand and I could play it for another 10 years. Masterpiece.

Well, Vice City is the only GTA game which I've completed countless amounts of times, and I never got bored of it. As for the other GTA's, I've completed IV, twice, and others, just once. Never completed V before, because my PS3 back then, died, so I couldn't. Now I'm replaying it on XB1, and I'm having a hell of a time.

I've tried replaying LCS recently, but once I reached to the second island, I got kinda bored. IMO, the game is much more fun on the first island.

I don't know how many hours i played gta SA, still keep playin it, probably the game i played in its open world the most, i cannot say how fun i had in its open world, however gta4's open world didn't get me this much, its DLCs made a little longer open world time but didn't even get close to san andreas. I don't how but feels like SA still has a unique open world you ask me.Probably i'll keep playin gta forever...

LCS's problem is its cutscenes and low budget style design.

GTA is my favourite franchise in gaming so I have played the main titles (apart from GTA 3 which I only got through once, mute MC just drags it down) a lot. I completed GTA VC and GTA SA both like 6 times but they are showing their age now so I doubt I'll get back to them (last playthrough was a bit tedious).

GTA IV holds up rather well though despite being 11 years old already and it's my favourite game of the series so I doubt it's lifecycle is ending any time soon even though I take longer breaks now. Already finished it 8 times (but I stopped playing the episodes a while ago and prefer to jump straight to V now). GTA V also gets more fun when you replay it and it's the best in terms of graphics and overall gameplay so I'll definitely be replaying it a few more times (5 times so far)

I only started playing IV last year but I've completed it 3 times, played every mission countless times using different saves, and play it most days. I think I won't get bored of playing it regularly for a long time and even when I start playing another game I'll keep going back to it, it's my favourite GTA.

Before that I played V a lot for maybe 2 years straight as well as watching my brother play it for years before that, completed it 3 times and replayed stuff loads. This was before I knew a better GTA existed 😛 but I was getting a bit bored of it anyway. Unfortunately now when I try to go back to it it's no longer much fun as IV's superior quality has ruined it for me, there is a lot I like about it though so I'm sure I'll revisit it at some point.

Back in the day Vice City and San Andreas were the ones I played the most. I think I've completed VC over 10 times (did it again like a year ago and still knew where all the hidden packages were lol, I've played it so much I can 100% it with ease and have a set order to do everything in). Probably completed San Andreas 4 or 5 times. Spent years playing both, I'd guess at least 3 years each of being my go to game in total.

LCS, VCS and III I completed (VCS to 100%) but never replayed them much. I wasn't so into playing on PSP and although I did mess around with III for a bit I could never get into it as much as it's harder and has no map.

I actually have lost counts how many times I have finished these games but I know that I have finished the top 5(III,VC,SA,IV,V) for "double digits" now and at least 100 percented each once.

Just because I like it less than VC, SA, V doesn't mean I'm not a big fan. It's my 6th favorite videogame of all time. I love this series way too much. GTA itself as a series is very dear to me. However I like some of the entries more.

I find lasting value in all GTAs except V. Like it was the first GTA I never bothered beating for a second time, it just felt boring... Even a smaller budget GTA like LCS was a ton of fun.

I can't be the only one to feel this way since I remember about a week or so after V's release, people were already asking "man, so when's the next GTA coming?". I don't remember that with other GTAs.

I just started playing V again recently.  God how horrible and cringey the story is.  I found myself rolling my eyes and sighing loudly more times than I’d care to.

On to the OP’s question.  One playthrough is enough for me, usually.  Though I admit, over the years I have played thru the stories on most of the GTA’s again.  Now, after I beat the story I’ll continue to drive around and have fun for an unlimited amount of time.  I still have a PS2.  I still have Vice City and San Andreas and play them both, usually for short isolated periods of time when I’m feeling nostalgic.  I still play GTA IV when I want to have a bit of a better driving experience than that of GTA V.

Anyways, the short answer is: they last indefinitely.

I bought GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas 9 years and a half ago and I still regularly play and enjoy them.
