Cheating doesn't pay...

Cheat creator found guilty and owes take-two 150k...

Florida man Jhonny Perez, creator of the Grand Theft Auto Online cheat program Elusive, has been found guilty by default by a district court in New York of copyright infringement, and has been penalised with both a fine and legal costs.

Highly doubt he'll ever pay that to be honest. Got to be some loopholes, them making a more dramatic headline than it really is.

Is a thread really needed? 🤔 jackrobot posted about it in the PSA thread.

But I do think Take Two Interactive should consider that as one menu goes down, another one goes up, and to what end this situation will have.

That's a big OOF. I wonder how much the dude made from selling the cheats.

Man creates cheating app and makes millions.

Man is caught, found guilty, and must pay $220,000 in damages.

Man is laughing, all the way to the bank.

He can just spawn some moneybags on top of himself.

Take Two and R* could save themselves so much trouble with hackers and modders if they invested in dedicated servers for both GTAO and RDO but nah.

Not really, in order to change from a p2p system they would have to completely rewrite huge chunks of the original game code. We all know how much they avoid touching the original code base.

Not only would it cost them a fairly large amount of money to pay a team of devs to perform the rewrite (assuming that they could find enough people capable of understanding the original code) but they would have to pay for a very large number of dedicated servers along with a support infrastructure (physical locations to house the servers and staff to maintain them) to handle the extremely large player base.

Carrying on with their original p2p design is the only way that they can see to continue making the enormous amounts of revenue that they are still making 5 an a bit years after the original release of the game.

Edit..

TLDR. Saving money outweighs both saving trouble and poor customer relations.

Game cost them like $250 million. They have made over $7 Billion, I think they could afford dedicated servers.

At least servers would prevent all these menus being online, and would actually be a good excuse to have micros pay for the servers.

f*cking Mineplex on Minecraft has better menu detection than GTA's anti cheater system. To me, that says something.

Guess that's their life lesson for taking the cheap route.

Peer to peer for GTA online in 2013 was a mistake. Using peer to peer for Red Dead Online in 2018 was a mistake.

Let's throw their words right back at them...

Equipment Upgrade:

$I have no f*cking idea how much dedicated servers cost

Staff Upgrade:

$999,999,999

Hire us instead of those whackjobs in Customer Support

Security Upgrade:

$Whatever funds came out of Take-Two's last lawsuit

I hadn't read the link until now, but have to agree fully with @fw3.

Does anyone know how much that menu cost and how many sold?

Seems a lot like the creator is laughing, IMO. If he made good money off tgat and got fined less than he earned, this thread is titled wrong...

Cheating does pay, literally. 🤣😂

Oh no, not repeated. Goes far further than ever imagined. Highlighted best of all by adding microtransactions during a testing phase. At least GTA:O didn't sell out straight away and actually offered a fair amount of content and choices to begin with, lol.

RDRO is a huge step backwards, IMO.

Florida's a good place to lose a suit like this, forfeiture laws are still very pro-property owner.

Martin, wys.

Rockstar literally encouraged beta testers before launch to buy shark cards. There are beta loading screens of online encouraging testers to buy shark cards. GTAO was the exact same thing, even before launch.

To be fair, I didn't know that, lol. Fair play. Though it does make sense for a couple of testers to buy a couple of cards of course. But not in a profit sense, though R* wouldn't complain. But much like testing races, missions, unlocks etc. Though I'm no fan, they needed testing I'm sure.

But either way, RDRO just went too far for me. This game wasn't so blatant to start I feel. The beach bum DLC was free and the clothes too, lol. Fast forward to today's arena. Wow!
