Money is pointless, can only buy clothes and guns basically. the cigar/cigarette smoking is horrendous and only a mouth breathing trogladyte would approve of it, your guy smokes for less than 5 seconds. only one hit, why not have X/A to take hits of it however long you want? GTA online had that feature, absolutely bonkers. Also no bank robbing in free roam, robocops, people are instantly aware your arthur/john even when wearing masks/banadanas.

what the heck were they thinking 7/10

You can hold and press to smoke online, they added it with an update 🙃

I still think the weather in this game is among it's biggest flaws. Not the actual weather effects because they all look fine but just the erratic changes and unrealistic frequency of rain you get in certain parts of the map.

I just feel in Lemoyne, New Austin and the Great Plains section of WE it rains way too much. In these parts of the map I just want prolonged and consistent sunshine with blue skies but I feel like theres always frequent spells of rainy weather that ruin the summery, hot and humid vibe I wants these parts of the map to have.

I think going forward Rockstar really needs to look at giving us some control over the weather in the settings.

Just a "Change Weather" cheat would be nifty. f*cking R* logic, best weather effects in a game, no weather cheat

Exactly man. In RDR i would some times end up there when calmly riding my horse around the map and when i entered Tall Trees the whole calming scenery and that bit of fear of unforgiving wildlife made it feel like i was in endless world of some old cozy bedtime story. Despite being just a portion of the map, it felt bigger than the entire map of RDR. But that's just my opinion...

I think RDR2 is partly a victim of it's own visual fidelity in this regard - the draw distances being so much better and the vistas rendered in such greater detail and image quality. This is particularly evident in the remade New Austin/West Elizabeth. By being able to see more and further than in the original game this has the unintended consequence of making the world feel smaller. At least, that was my perception.

I think it also speaks to Rockstar's current design philosophy in terms of map design though. Starting with GTA V and continuing into RDR2, they really seem to want to create these grand, sweeping vistas for players to take in. These are obviously visually spectacular and breathtaking to behold (especially on first sight), however, they almost all involve allowing you to see across pretty much the entire map. Take some of the peaks in RDR2 for example - the watchtower up in the Grizzlies, Mounts Shann and Hagen, just southwest of Wapiti. The views from up there all encompass the vast majority of the "new" map's landmass. Taking in, what are supposed to be, four different states of land. Even from just standing atop the great incline south of the Heartlands at the edge of the New Hannover border, you can see all across the neighbouring state of Lemoyne right the way up to its end at the shoreline where St. Denis is. This latter one I personally feel is to the detriment of the game world's believability - it makes Lemoyne feel tiny and rather artificial in terms of how many landmarks and places are condensed into the one area.

In RDR(1) in contrast, there was no view where you could get a really good look across the whole landmass. The great cliff between McFarlane's Ranch and Armadillo made sure of that whilst the highest peak in the game - at Nekoti Rock - only let you see as far as Mexico to the south (and in much less clarity as I referred to earlier). The world in general was much flatter and the elevation that did exist (as with the great cliff) was probably included to actually prevent you seeing too far owing to the limited technology of the time. Whether a consequence of limitation or not, however, I think this actually made the original game's world "feel" bigger. You could find yourself in individual parts of the map, like Tall Trees as you said, and not be able to see too far beyond your current surroundings. In some parts you could see further, like in the New Austin desert obviously, but not so far that you could get the best reference for where you were in relation to different landmarks. There would always be a rock formation or haze to limit your view. You had to get good at memorising the roads and pathways and/or were more reliant on the map to guide you, which also probably served to make the world feel bigger as you had to travel longer with the paths not necessarily being direct at getting you from A to B.

So yeah, in a way I think the advancement of technology and Rockstar's ambition to actually "show" off their grand, sweeping worlds has been a bit of a curse as well as a blessing. A blessing for sure in how beautiful the resultant views and expanses have been. But a curse in terms of the authenticity of the world as a real and believable landmass, particularly when compared to how big Rockstar are otherwise trying to convince you they are (i.e. the supposedly four-state world of RDR2's "main map").  I do love the views, don't get me wrong, but I think in future they should consider more how letting you see the whole world might actually end up making it feel smaller and more artificial.

Apologies for the long-windedness!

finally they did something right, now they need to add it to single-player or else they're goobers. 8/10 no freemode bank robberies is kind of dumb when RDR1 John working for the feds with his wife/son kidnapped held in a prison can rob banks.

This is in no way an unpopular opinion, but I don't know where else to post this, and it's not worth making a thread over it.

There are times where I see people play Red Dead Redemption 2, so I go through the typical "man, I feel like replaying RDR2" phase, but then I remember that Rockstar decided that making stallion scrotum shrink in cold weather was much more important than a New Game+ in a late 2018 game.

I feel like going through the story again, interact with Dutch's gang and see what details I missed, but I do NOT feel like grinding my health, stamina, deadeye, the little charms you made at the fence to give yourself some minor buffs, re-exploring the map, redrawing and restudying all the animals and plants and landmarks, gathering the material once again for increased inventory space... and goddamn Algernon and his flowers and feathers, just for that stupid hat that goes with nothing and pathetic revolver that tickles enemies while missing their heads.

I'm not asking for all the money and weapons and items back, quite the contrary, I just don't want to redo the non-story content. Even some of the prologue-exclusive perks are useless, like that pronghorn charm which prevents carcasses stowed on your horse from rotting. Why even put this if we can't get it unless if we complete the vast majority of the game? What's the POINT of having carcasses if it's only useful to give them to Pearson for camp accessories? Sell them? While you're stuffed with over $20K as Marston?

Good grief, Rockstar. Good. f*cking. Grief.

I hate Dutch more than Micah really. Dutch is the one who betrayed the gang. If he had just listened to everyone else in the gang when they were saying "Micah is an untrustworthy asshole" the game would be over after chapter 1. Micah is never rescued from prison

the end. Dutch and his f*cking plan. Micah is the type of person who preys on people who are easy to manipulate. I think that's his most dangerous character trait, being a treacherous textbook psychopath. He wouldn't dare to try to take on the gang when it was in its full strength because he knew that Charles, Arthur, John and all the other honorable boahs would put him down in less than a second.

Also mission design could be better. Like that valentine bar brawl. You beat up 1 guy, go help one of your friends, Tommy comes out and you beat him in a scripted "mash button to win" sequence.

The brawl is too short, there isn't enough brawling and you don't even feel like a winner. You didn't beat anyone. You didn't do anything impressive. You mashed a button.... you did something a monkey could have done....

It should be called Red Dead [something other than Redemption] so I could search for anything about RDR without wading through millions of RDR2 results

Or this. But 2 implies sequel, which it is release wise.

But content wise it's definitely a prequel

Although the game is already outstanding. I believe a beta version of RDR2 might have been a better game.... Considering what we know of the beta.

John mentions it when he plays Poker... "one day I want to play liars dice, not because I'm a liar..."

Looks like the developers were aware but never bothered

Dutch is the best character in the entire game. I had to say it given the thread title. Dutch was f*cking incredible in the game.

Don’t get me wrong though as I absolutely loved Arthur as well. After playing through Red Dead Redemption 2 going back to Red Dead Redemption felt more richer in terms of knowing the story more. Dutch was f*cking crazy and I swear after Hosea died I felt like he went even more into a downward spiral.

RDR2 may have one of the best stories in video games, but i have no desire to replay it. it's weird because i also love GTA IV's story and i have completed the game dozens of times already. maybe it's because RDR2 starts out too slow (even slower than IV). or maybe the free roam is too restrictive at the beginning. idk

I thought Micah Bell was gonna be one of the cool morally ambiguous characters  based on the trailer and cover art. I still think he’s pretty cool in terms of appearance but he’s deeply rotten on the inside even though I think his outfits are awesome especially his outfit in American Venom, the burgundy leather jacket which I bought something similar in real life. I like his voice actor who does comedy skits by what iv seen and his Buckley’s coffee ad was fun to watch. I think the voice actor is a cool guy and did a good job at bringing to life the most hated character with barely any redeeming qualities. The end fight if you go back for the money made Micah more terrifying as a villain at how sadistic he was.

Also applies to RDR1, but I hate that winning luck based gambling mini games are required to get 100%. Even worse in RDR2 since there are certain challenges where you not only have to win, you have to win within a certain parameter.

I think in RDR1 it's mostly skill. Poker and liar's dice have elements of luck to them but you're pretty well in control (liar's dice is very predictable to the point that I never lose a game, and if you cheat with an extra hidden card in poker you pretty much always have the upper hand so it's rare that it takes more than a few tries to clear the table once you know how to play). Blackjack is the most luck based but the only thing you're required to do is make a profit at it once so you can literally just spend 30 seconds playing one round and win $1 and never play it again. And horseshoes, arm wrestling and five finger fillet are all skill. Point certainly stands for RDR2 though.

Micah Bell is probably the most consistent character of all R* games I've played. He's a manipulative psycopath who's willing to stab the backs of everyone who aren't useful to him. He enjoys sadism, murder and torture in a terrifying way and I think R* and Peter Blomquist the voice actor portray that very convincingly. I don't understand why people say they hate Micah, as a character he's very well written although we wouldn't agree with his very social darwinistic views on society

They didn't retcon the plot very well from rdr2 to rdr. All John basically says about the gang in rdr 1 is "they left me to die". I guess they left it vague on purpose to develop a prequel but it kinda backfires on the original RDR. It just makes no sense how in RDR 1 he never mentions about all the stuff the gang did. Never mentions Arthur, never mentions how the gang helped him to build his ranch and everything. Although there are some good retcons like John not being able to swim as a playable character, most of RDR 2 just screams "it's a prequel" to me.

John being shot in the end of chapter 6 is dumb. He takes a rifle bullet to the shoulder and then shows up a little while later just holding his shoulder a little. The gang left me to die? They didn't. The line loses all impact to me when John tanks it like its nothing. There was no drama to it, everyone knows he's the protagonist of RDR 1 so him getting shot like that, didn't even shock me at all. It was like watching any generic, nameless goon die. Should have really been more impactful like I don't know, Arthur abandoning the train heist after seeing John get shot with heavy bleeding and all. Arthur escorts him to safety and John could give him some impactful lines like "If I don't make it, make sure my family does" or something like that.

John going after Micah wasn't that dumb. Like Sadie said "It's about stopping the man". Sadie and Charles could have easily died trying to take down Micah's gang without John seeing as how they both got injured even with John in the deal. Dutch could have maybe got Micah down in the end without John but better to have John there to seal the deal right? Also I think that the law could have found John sooner or later even if he wasn't involved in the Micah deal. After all they managed to find Bill, Javier and Dutch so giving up on just John, I don't see it happening. In fact I theorize that the law first tried to get Micah do the hunting for the old gang members. After all he had a history of working with the law before and had no trouble with stabbing his former gangmates in the back.  Although he had no family or anything for the law to hold hostage but just have the law tell him that "we'll give you some money and pay less attention to your wrongdoings" and I'd think he'd do it. Maybe he would even enjoy it. It would like be a personal achievement to him. "There's winners and losers, only I turned out to be the only winner in the so famous Van der Linde gang"
