I have to gush about Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,,

I've been playing the franchise of Grand Theft Auto for 15 years now. And seeing as this is the place to talk about Grand Theft Auto, I figured I would gush about one of the best games of all time: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Now, to be honest, each Grand Theft Auto is number one to me. Like, I'm not going to sit here and say that GTA 4 was better than 5 or Visa Versa. I believe they all have their own elements that make them the best. But Vice City resonates with me so much, as I'm sure it does for others. Let's get started on the gushing.

The Setting

  • I am honestly envious of the 1980's Miami scene displayed in Vice City. It brought me in. To see beautiful palm trees, women roller blading in barely any clothing... Like, that's the dream. The boats, the mansions, the hotels, just all combined made it great. (Not saying you can't find that anywhere, but Miami is just exuberant.) The people that walked around. The cars. All of that creating an astonishing setting.

The Plot (CONTAINS SPOILERS) -Huge fan of the plot. Loved how it related to Scarface (Might be my favorite movie of all time) so well. The random calls from Sonny were the funniest, intimidating things I've ever heard. The way you start from the bottom and work your way up into building the Vercetti Empire was so much fun. I really liked the turn of Lance Vance. Personally, playing it the first time, I didn't see Lance being on the side of Sonny. The people you meet along the way (Into that later) make the plot fun.

The Characters -Tommy Vercetti- Personal favorite character in the whole series. Bad-ass to the bone. Really damn cool. Also showed a compassionate side with Mercedes. He won in the end, and it's just so much fun to play as him. "Dumb Florida moron". So many cool quotes and dialogue. His relationship with Ken and Lance was awesome. When he told Lance to "take a day off", I literally thought he was that much cooler of a boss too. Aside from Tommy, everyone else was fantastic. I could give billions of reasons why. I must say, without a shadow of a doubt, the cut-scenes with Diaz could honestly make someone cry of laughter. The voice acting was incredible: Ray Liotta, Lee Majors, Burt Reynolds, Danny Trejo, etc. Great cast of colorful characters.

Weapons -This category speaks for itself. Vast amount of weapons. I personally loved the mini-gun the most. So overpowered, but so fun to just saw people in half with it. Great thing about this game is finding the weapons scattered through out the cities. Going to the airport to get the Spas-12 was just a treat, in my eyes. All the weapons speak for themselves.

Missions -Great amount of missions. Fun, and progressive. And by progressive, I mean like the difficulty progressed perfectly with each mission that went by (although, I don't think any mission was too hard). Again, the Scarface mission line was evident. "The Party" mission was a perfect damn intro mission to everybody. I will say one thing, and that is: I wish there were more missions with the same main cast of characters, and additional characters. If someone could mod missions into the game (I'm sure you can) or expand upon the game, it would blow my f*cking mind. The only problem is: You'd have different voice actors, which would bug any fan of the original voice acting. I'm not saying the amount of missions was small, but after gathering 100 packages (More on that later), doing vigilante missions, taxi missions, etc., I didn't feel a big pay off because by the time you got done doing that, you were probably almost done with the game. Now, I have my own personal solution towards that, and I'll explain later. But, as of now, the missions were fantastic. It felt fresh and vibrant. From racing boats, to fighting chefs in a back alley, Vice City has it all.

Goals and Rewards

  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City has goals and rewards. I love having goals in a game. Each of those goals goes toward an even bigger goal of achieving 100% completion. List of goals; Collect 100 hidden packages, 12 Vigilante missions, 12 Ambulance missions, do all the Rampages, collect cars, complete all story mode missions, etc. Each of the goals gives you a reward. I love that. It's so gratifying to get 60 hidden packages, run up through the hotel, grab your mini-gun, and mow people down. Want to sprint forever? Do the ambulance missions. It's things like that that bring me into trying to achieve all the goals. Here is my strategy for enjoying the missions as well as possible, and having a ton of fun: Collect all 100 hidden packages before starting the story. Yes, you can do this. If you don't know the trick, or tricks, on how to get to the second island immediately, learn it. If you can't find any source to teach you, then contact me. Going to the second island will allow you to finish your search for the hidden packages. You will have an arsenal of weapons at your disposal for the whole story. So much fun. That's how I like to do it, but do as you wish. My whole point: Vice City has goals for you to attain, and rewards for your hard work.

  • Best soundtrack you'll ever hear (my opinion). Tons of amazing songs and talk radio. Foreigner, Megadeth, Judas Priest, David Lee Roth, Toto, I don't even need to say more. This game introduced me to a lot of new music that I had never heard of because I was very young when I started playing. When kids in school were into more modern music, I was always surprised that they didn't appreciate the amazing sounds of the 70's and 80's as well. The whole soundtrack just fit the setting perfectly. Listening to "I Ran" while speeding past your mansion with a f*ck load of cops chasing you is something that anyone would love. Need I say more about the music?

  • I don't need to say much here. Want a tank? Get a tank. Want a helicopter? Do it. Boat? Yours. Plane? Yours (I consider the sea sparrow a plane. If you really love planes, San Andreas helps). The amount of cars gave a lot of choice. Trying to find them for Sunshine Auto's pissed me the f*ck off, but it showed the array of cars there really were. Fun, and fast cars. Go hit all the jumps. Oh, and motorcycles. Goddamn. Too much fun in the motorcycles.

Cops and Gangs

  • I don't have much to say here, because it's self explanatory. The cops are good. The Swat and FBI will obliterate you. Obviously the army too. Don't f*ck around. The Haitian and Cuban war is pretty cool. The Vercetti gang is pretty nifty. They don't help as much as I wished they could. San Andreas fixed that. Still, amazing and colorful cops and gangs, adding to an already perfect game.

  • Maybe the best game I've ever laid my hands on. I've literally dreamed of living in Miami due to this game. And I've vacationed in Southern Florida and absolutely loved it. Phenomenal cast of characters. Story is superb. Scarface's influence on this game pretty much guarantees that it's going to be one hell of a game. Hours and hours and more hours of fun are waiting for you when you pick up this game and put it into your gaming system. My favorite soundtrack of the whole series, tied with San Andreas. Twists and turns in the plot that keep you intrigued the whole time. Tommy Vercetti is the best character in the whole series. One thing I need to mention is that the comedy is so perfectly timed that it makes me smile to think about it. If you've never played this game, then play it. I will probably make a video review of everything I just said, some day. I can't gush much more. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is, in my eyes, the epitome of a perfect video game. It is perfect. No one can deny that (Except the assholes who will deny it). Thank you very much for reading. I just had to gush.

TL:DR; Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is the perfect video game. Reasons are listed above.

Thank you,...

Great topic. Was looking to make something on this myself.

I’ve suddenly felt very nostalgic for VC. The sound of the pause screen/map. The theme. The shootouts with security. The asset building. The rags to riches story. Superb.

Im surprised all the VC fans haven't checked in here. All you mentioned is why I love VC and its my favorite GTA of them all. I think its the best sound track for a video game that includes radio music of all time. Good read.

Apart from some flaws here and there it's still the king of the 3D era.

I have a lot of sentimental attachment towards it because I was born in 1986 myself so it's pretty much the closest thing I have to a GTA that's from my time. The assets, map, soundtrack, Tommy, side missions etc just ooze style and class. It will forever remain a modern classic.

Looking back I appreciate it even more.

The opening scene. The Malibu club. The police station. Tear gas. Spike strips. The Sea Sparrow. The music in the North Point Mall.
