If im not wrong,rockstar always gave the player an ability in their games after gta 4,RDR had Dead Eye,MP3 had bullet time(this one isn't special,MP had bullet time before this too),GTA5 had Rage mode,Driving Focus and Bullet Time,and now RDR2 has an improved version of Dead Eye.What do you think about this?

The only special ability I like is Dead Eye because it was a an original creation unlike the GTA V special abilities that were just knock offs from other games.

 

Franklin's ability is a knock off of the "zone" ability from Midnight Cub.

 

Michael's is a knock off of "bullet time" in Max Payne.

 

Trevor's is a knock off of "rage" in Scarface.

 

GTA VI might have them, but I don't want them necessarily UNLESS they're more creative this time around instead of taking them from better games.

I think Dead Eye is a mix of bullet time

I want them to be replaced by certain pills/drugs. Like you take an adrenaline pill and the time slows down. If you take the pill in a car it will be similar to Franklin's ability. During a shootout it will be similar to Michael's. Painkillers can be used to replicate Trevor's ability.

Yes they wouldn't be "special abilities" anymore. Skills like shooting and driving would have a bigger role if they are improved if this system is implemented.

Not really. What makes Dead Eye vastly different is the fact you can select different body parts to shoot and John/Arthur can do it automatically.

I like them, but I expect (and want) them to be only if there are multiple protagonists; it will help specialize them more.

Special abilities in gta 5 always felt like another way to make the 3 characters different. In Max Payne

and Red Dead Redemption it felt like a essential part of the game in gta 5 it felt like a afterthought and you could easily forget it was there.

Interesting you mention this because i’ve always thought of rdr and gta have a similar type of relationship as The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. With Bethesda and rockstar  switching between them each time one is released and having similar gameplay and “style” (don’t know what else to call it but you know what I mean) with many differences to set them apart (vats, Focus on FPS gameplay, deadeye, honor amoung many others) with widely different settings and universes, Obviously there are quite a few differences but I thought that it was interesting none of the less.

As much as I like GTA 5 I was not a fan of special abilities it makes the game easy and minimises player strategy.I rarely use them because it decrease fun of completing a challenging mission.

So maybe they will add them in GTA 6 but I wouldn't mind if they didn't.

I never really liked the addition of special abilities in GTA V. It's really one of those "modernization" things that seems to only be there just because every other AAA title is dumbed down with special abilities.

 

That being said, I've been thinking of a system that actually sounds relatively good. Well, at least to me anyways. I know that there's a lot of people that don't like many RPG elements, and that's perfectly fine. As Santader mentioned, drugs. Although, I'd expand upon that. Imagine if most of the RPG elements of GTA SA were to return. Most specifically Fat, Muscle, Sex Appeal, and Respect. I was thinking of adding another RPG element, "Addiction." Essentially, the more you depend on special abilities (the use of drugs), the more your Addiction rises. Addiction will pose health risks like increased Fat/Muscle loss rate, along with altering the character's physical appearance. Sex Appeal and, if not deemed too extreme towards player progression and freedom, Respect will also be capped. Now, you'd still be able to wade off Addiction from reducing drug use and/or going to the hospital for a detox. This may be seen as a punishment for trying to cheese the game, in a legitimate fashion (not cheats), but it could also be used just for pissing around in free roam. One of my favorite pastimes in GTA SA is getting pedestrians to insult CJ, via high Fat and/or low Sex Appeal, so he can insult them back (and possibly start a fight).

 

For context, this idea came to me after the thought of a GTA SA prequel with Big Bear as (one of) the playable protagonist(s). He's one of the more-interesting characters from that game that didn't have enough love or backstory. If anybody remembers, drugs laid some havoc on his body.
