Griefers Ruin Hunting

The worst griefers are the level 100+ douchbags running around targeting much lower level players with explosive ammo and what not.

The disparity between low level & high level characters is much greater in this game than in GTAO, owing to the power of the ability cards. It has me rethinking even playing this game altogether. That and the lack of content and care shown by the game designers. It's sad but I don't see it getting any better. It may well be time for me to move on to other games, unfortunately. If it gets better, I may be back one day... if the game survives that long, we'll see. Who knows I may change my mind; but I'm just getting less optimistic by the day.

Keep in mind if you hitch your horse you will not lose any pelts or anything that is stored on horse. Works with missions also. So if I'm hunting i usually hitch my horse to a tree or ground, just in case someone comes and kills me. Hope it helps and hang in there.  The more you play the better you will get

I honestly don't have many issues ..I'm pretty observant of my surroundings and pretty handy with the Steele

But I've got a hand full of Rough Riders that are just getting into online (been mostly playing sp still)

And they just get continuously wrecked and is basically driving them away from playing it online all together ..which kinda sucks

It goes a long way to check your map and hunt where there’s no players. Amberino rarely has players, the same with Roanoke Ridge. If there are players there, then just go somewhere else. Rarely are there more than 20 players on the map at any given time, and the map is massive. Most players stick to the populated areas, Cholla Springs, and the Heartlands.

I've probably been really lucky so far, but almost every high level I've crossed paths with has been really chill, or at the very least paid no attention to me.

I've had far more altercations with lower levels who start sh*t for no apparent reason.

Unless someone blatantly shoots your horse. THat happened once in The West Grizzlies right after I completed the Colter Gang HIdeout. A player rode in and shot my horse that was hitched and had a stack of pelts.

I also had an asshole kill me just to steal a Skunk carcass close to the Butcher in Valentine, and shot my Horse enough to flat out kill it. Because of some pelts that cannot be stolen I would guess.

Carcasses can be stolen from your horse. I expected that the horse would kick the thief in the nuts. NPC's horses do so. But no such luck.

Guess it is Rockstar logic.

In gta, if you see someone with a pogo (monkey) mask, flip flops and swimming trunks, you shoot the bastard on sight.

In RDR2 it seems to be bare chests with stove pipe hats who need to be shot as soon as you spot them. I came across some high level griefers with Slow and Steady or Slippery Bastard. But the vast majority are low level scum.

This will soon be a thing of the past, thanks to proximity blips.

I know. I’m talking about what OP could do today, not in the future

Pelt's cannot be removed from Horses. So that griefer probably shot up my horse to even keep me from selling them, as well as steal that skunk carcass. That had to have been purely for griefing, instead of earning money at another players expense.

I know that. I'm also pitching in with what OP cannot do in the future.

OP - if you don't already, I'd try keeping the companion app open whilst hunting.

It's quite invaluable.

Also, like others have mentioned, invest in ability cards.

Slow and Steady and Slippery Bastard will help you no end if used effectively, either to engage with a griefer or to escape from one.

Use Never Without One to prevent being headshotted.

While the greifer problem is as bad as it is right now you have to be aware of your surroundings. The map is your friend if you don't feel like keep pulling it up in game than use the companion app. As soon as I log on I look at who is around me. I observe for a few seconds, if someone is greifing usually they will come right after you. Trust NO ONE, especially when you have pelts or doing a stranger mission. If you start by going to an isolated area then keep your eye on the map every once in a while during the skinning animation. Even if griefers are around, this will give you a chance to try and defend yourself. When I go into town to sell my pelts and such I'm also extra cautious. Plan an escape route or know which store you can hide in if someone starts coming after you. I've been using store more often to escape greifers. Last but not least, focus on meat and think of pelts and carcasses as icing on the cake. Sometimes if I don't feel like travelling far and the closest butcher has people around it I will stock up on meat and skin or pluck everything. This way even if you die you will retain most of your stuff to sell.

This. My friend is retarded when it comes to new games and never watches the map. I've made a habit of it from playing so Destiny (thanks keenscout) and I always watch the map in any game now. Even when I'm sitting at camp. I watch the map. I can't stand encountered players because it seems like there's so many toxic and cocky players it doesn't make games fun anymore. I've been hunted and attempted to be griefed by a few players. I actually came across someone who warned me I was about to be griefed after she was by that same person. And just the other day, some guy moved my horse from a store just so he could get a cheap shot on me. I keot waving at him and then left the session. I was lucky I just had sold all my hunting goods.

Also, when hunting and paranoid about assholes sell the bodies first and then pelts.

In GTA, a level 1 with special carbine has a fighting chance against a level 1000.  But if you are under rank 24 in RDR, you have almost no chance vs a level 100.  So for that reason alone, I suggest you utilize passive mode to hunt in peace.  In PS4, you can glitch into passive mode by quickly disconnecting (and reconnecting) internet in network settings while in the process of joining a recent player's session (play a story mission if recent players list is blank).  Player blips will appear transparent on your radar, but you will be invisible to them, and vice versa.

I had a player kill me en route to the butcher in Rhodes. Usually I keep off the roads and cut across the open plains to be safe. I was just outside the town at night, carrying an extra deer, and this guy did a driveby. He ignored the friendly whistle. So... I respawned, ran back over to him, and opened fire. He was just standing there. I got a few shots off before he fired back. I killed him pretty quickly. He tried to kill me long distance when I picked up the carcass. I abandoned it and zigzagged to safety. Then, I whistled for my horse and went back to kill him again. He killed my horse when I tried to run into him. He had a slither of health remaining, tried to rifle me, and I dual pistolled him.

Then, I put some distance between us. The funny part was that I think he tried to chase me down. I saw a red dot when I stopped near the woods at the Flat Iron Lake. Although, I headed back to the Heartlands to get another deer and a perfect bison pelt.

It's annoying but I won't shy away from hunting down those players to teach them a lesson. The last guy in Blackwater got a nice flambé surprise. :D

When I get killed some randomer when travelling I always run away. I never fight back. I get far away, then I wait. I watch them on the map and when they start a mission or make for the butcher I unleash hell.

There is no better kill than killing someone who thinks they got away with a cheap kill and make them loose money at the same time. It's much more satisfying than just immediately killing them in return.

That's why they should implement invite lobbies. There's two major and very distinct groups of player who want to enjoy the game as they like and I don't get what would be the loss for any of them by playing separately.

I agree there should be invite only lobbies and not trying to take away from that, but when the next update drops, griefers will only be a slight inconvenience. A fly to be swatted if you like. Happy days.

While I agree with you, can we stop this stupid thing of associating penis size with everything. It's just so stupid.

I like bullying players like you out of session the most.

How many levels are there in this game? I can't believe level 100+ players can already get their hands on explosive ammo.

Unlockables go up to Level 100. I forget when you unlock explosive ammo, but I remember it not taking me that long. I never bothered to use it because the pamphlet to get it is really expensive and you can only craft a bunch of explosive rounds (with ingredients you get from hunting such as animal fat).

It goes up to Rank 99. There's nothing unlocked at Rank 100. Express Explosive Pamphlet is unlocked at Level 90. It costed $1,000.00.

So, you unlock them but they're still hard to reach just like in GTA, and to refill the ammo it takes some hassle? Alright.

I'm still dumbfounded that it unlocks so early.

It's pretty easy to gather. But the situation to use them, it doesn't come by much.
