Ability card question.

Just a quickie question fellow cow people. Paint it black=auto "painting" only?. I am a tad off of having max dead eye level 10 and on upgrade 2 of "paint it black" which only seems to auto paint target(s) (eventually) with loads of unneccesary "x's" then misses most of them when firing. Unimpressed. Does it get any better for this card?. I feel I do better and quicker too without it.

Also...slow and stready drains dead eye utterly and completely necessitating some kind of constant replenishment plan for during gunfights I guess?.

BUT THE BENZ

PIB does not change, it simply drains less dead eye on higher tiers. stays the same, mechanic-wise!

You're a cow. If anything I'm a bull. ...a bullshidardist

1. Paint It Black is good for PvE: basically like the early Story version of Dead Eye painting Xs, not as good because time doesn't slow. I find it's only good on NPCs, and then, only random hits, but it is helpful when confronted with a crowd and you try to target heads.

2. Slow and Steady is good for PvP, or general focus hunting, PvE +XP. I haven't noticed a bad drain, but I am up to III, and if I am going to fight I pop a Miracle Tonic or at least Snake Oil - and I get through at least 3 player kills, same player respawning. I keep my cores up, too, so using it spur of the moment usually works out.

Thanks mostly all. This, "?" in a sentence, is a clue @Gleeman Vox 😉

Pretty disappointed to hear about the auto-paint thing. I had just bought this card as I was going to use it for hunting. I guess I will still level it up, but again, like with auto aim, Rockstar force us to be spoon fed the game like little children.

Yeah I was also disapointed with Paint it Black. Its kinda useless for hunting the way it is... you try to line up your shot and the thing goes marking x’s all over the place, ruining your pelt nonetheless. Just plain sucks. I really dont see much use for it on RDO apart from crowd control like someone mentioned above.

But Slow and Steady is so far (and by far) my favorite card of all I’ve unlocked (lvl 27 currently). I’ve survived (and overcame) lots of PvP encounters thanks to this ability. It also very helpful if you intend in playing peacefully, without the need of always having your guns on hand (and not being oneshotted just for riding by). Other players seem to notice this (some of them anyway).

If you get your marks painted well and quickly then PIB can be better than a scope for engagements at beyond lock-on range. And it'd be a doozy in a hypothetical free aim environment. But yeah, as things stand now, it's a bit Meh Tier.

This makes me think how paint it black could be useful on PC with mouse. I bet it's easier to mark the cursor over the heads. Or even free aim headshot outside auto aim range. I don't know... but can you imagine trying to shoot down a flock of birds with no auto aim on PC? Eh.

Paint it black is nice for cleaning out gang hideouts. Against NPC's, the ability works. With hunting, it is more of a ride-by shooting. On the entry level, it drains dead eye like hell. On thier II, the drain is still significant.

Just outside Valentine near the river, pick Indian Tabacco and craft potent snake eye tonics like crazy.

I tried the Unblinking Eye with Paint it black. The drain is a bit less, but still crippling.

I would safe my cash for Focus Fire or Slippery Bastard.

Is PIB dependant on weapon range? For example, if I'm wielding pistols, and activate PIB, could I paint and hit someone at, say, bolt-action range?

PIB destroys the animals when hunting lol .. but was very good for clearing hideouts at a low rank. Now, it may be worth swapping out

No. And targets through a scope are not painted as well. If your gun is worn out and won't shoot straight anymore, it will still paint and shoot on the mark. No matter how degraded the gun is.

Thank you. I'll probably look into leveling up other cards that suit my playstyle. I've run into guys that can pop my hat off and pop my skull off before I'd be able to paint them black enough...

@Happy Huntershows how PIB can come in very handy at range in this video.

My own experience of p.i.b for hunting, at least, has been very unfavourable to be honest. I get that it can put a random mark on a target at greater range than the auto targeting can pick up but it has been fairly useless at actually killing anything for me. That's with multiple or single targets. In addition and an extra bug perhaps, the few birds that did go down at distance insta-despawned. Any of the other dead eye ability cards that I have function more usefully in dead eye mode for hunting than p.i.b does.

I found paint it black to be pointless.  Honestly the whole card system is stupid.  It adds an unnecessary level of complexity to the game.

Paint it Black is my counter of choice against Slippery Bastard because you can at least focus and hit those guys with it.

Thank you for the tip. My counter was to equip a shotgun. The cone of the blast would at least partially hit home.

Players with Slow and Steady still go down after a blast with the pump action shotgun.

With this you need to be close and PiB does not stop you from using shotguns. It's just a better tool for long distance.

If you reset your character, do you keep your ability cards and upgrades? I really want to change the way mine looks and ability cards are my last hang up on doing this.

They did eventually add the ability to redo your character's faces to GTAO, so I suppose there's a fair chance it'll happen in RDO sooner or later as well. Have faith!

I hope Rockstar will give one free round of character customization. Being the greedy f*qs that they are, character customization will cost a lot of gold.

I made the same mistake as with gta. I rushed the character creation to play online. The avatar looked like a meth head. I bought one hairstyle with one gold bar. My avatar looks OK now.

There is a tip on reddit that if you apply pommade just before visiting the barber, the barber will show more hairstyles. I did not check it.

Has anyone else was able to test if unblinking eye works with slippery bastard. I tested it yesterday and I found that the dead eye drained the same with or with out unblinking eye.

I only have slippery bastard tier 2 and unblinking eye tier 3.

Thanks

Tier 3 Unblinking Eye boosts your dead eye by 25%.  So with full dead eye (without yellow fortification) and Slippery, you get an extra 5 seconds before it drains your core.  With the other cards, it's 8 seconds.  I think Rockstar messed up by putting faster drain on Slippery instead of Slow & Steady.

This would actually make way more sense balancing wise.

I think both or none should have faster drain. I'm wondering if some cards might get changed in the update.
