The Unreleased Grand Theft Auto Titles

Recommended Posts

Adrian90

Found some unreleased Grand Theft Auto games in gaming magazines from 1999-2000:

Grand Theft Auto 2: Berlin Mission Pack [PC, PlayStation – Cancelled]

GTA: Berlin was in development by DMA Design / Take 2 Germany around 1999-2000, for the PC and PlayStation. The game reportedly was going to be a GTA: London style add-on pack, and was due for release on Spring 2000, but unfortunately was never released

                                                                                                  MAGAZINE SCANS:

                                                                                        PC Games (Germany) 1999-10

                                                                               tHFzxjzsCvE.jpg

                                                                                     PC Games (Germany) 1999-11

                                                 WH2vPewh4XI.jpg

                                                                                      Play The PlayStation (Germany) 1999-12

                                         ERYf1gBlKqI.jpg

Grand Theft Auto 2.5: Miami [PlayStation – Cancelled]
The GTA 2 team was working on a GTA: London style add-on pack, set in Miami as it happens, which was canned the day most of the programming team quit.

Magazine Scan: Play The PlayStation (Germany) 2000

                                  wy8tIYWldCM.jpg

Grand Theft Auto 2 [Nintendo 64 – Cancelled]

Also DMA Design was working on a Nintendo 64 version of Grand Theft Auto 2, but also was cancelled for unknown reasons.

I read on IGN in 2004 GTA Toledo was gonna be big but I never saw it on the shelves. I went to the local game store and asked the clerk about it and when he said that there was no such thing I bit his hand off.

E. sh*tposting aside I ran the German articles through a German translator if anyone cares:

After the terrific success of the black-humored action game Grand Theft Auto and the additional CD-ROM GTA London plans the German Take-2 subsidiary now a Berlin-Vision, which should play in the 80s - even before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Similar to GTA London, Berlin's urban areas should be recreated as authentically as possible. In the background, true New German Wave music will be heard. GTA Berlin will be released in the spring of 2000. Part 2 of the bestseller will be released on 23 October

Hardly a game has earned the term "cult" in recent years as Grand Theft Auto. Since its inception, thousands have opted for illegal life on the streets of America; also the Missionpack London 1969, which was released a few months ago, was able to win many more fans. A weitre additional CD called GTA Berlin is in the meantime in planning - before that Take 2 will, however, beckon us with the official successor to the surprise hit. We have tested the first executable version of GTA 2 for you

DMA Design-Grunder is leaving the company

After Take 2 Interactive acquired the Scottish studio DMA Design from Infogrames, DMA founder Dave Jones left the company. Take 2 Interactive will now support DMA Designs' plans for Playstation 2, Dreamcast and online GTA projects. DMA Design is currently working on the add-on CD GTA 2 Berlin and on GTA 2 for the Dreamcast

As nice as the idea of a German GTA game is where you're running around 1980s Berlin blaring NDW music, it just seems too good to be true. The fact that all the sources are in German and they're all talked about like a wishlist ("Berlins urban areas should be recreated" although it could be an error in translation), makes me think that it's either all lies for hype (like how Kavinsky said he was going to have a station in GTA 5 that never came to be) or a prank (akin to Harbour City). Could I be wrong? I hope I am. But everything's pointing to this just being fake, or maybe even a copyright trap.

There is GTA Rio de Janeiro that was cancelled by Rockstar but then leaked, it's now a staple in Brazilian gaming. /joke

Maybe their original plan for the series was for each game to be set in a different city and era around the world, but with the success of games set in the USA, they decided to keep it to tthe USA?

As for "GTA Miami", at this time they already established Vice City as the parody of Miami in the original GTA, so I don't know if it would make much sense to start making games set in real places after that, or maybe they realized GTA London 69 aand 61 didn't sell as well as expected, so they decided to invest all their ttime in GTA 3. Or, as dude above said, either a hoax or speculation.

The word "sollen" in this context would imo better be translated as "supposed to [be]":

"Berlins urban areas are supposed to be recreated".

Also:  "After the terrific success of the black-humored action game Grand Theft Auto and the addition al CD-ROM GTA London plans the German Take-2 subsidiary now a Berlin-Vision"

should read: "After the terrific success of the black-humored action game Grand Theft Auto and the addition al CD-ROM GTA London, the German Take-2 subsidiary now plans a Berlin-Vision".

It wasn't clear in your translation, but PC Games claimed, that developers working for a german T2-subdivision were developing this game...

^ thanks for your better translation and stuff. However, I was unable to find any information about a German subsidiary of T2, past or present, which still makes those articles feel like they’re just lies to boost magazine sales

e. I just realized GTA Miami was “canned the day most of the programming team quit”. @Adrian90 do you have a source for that or is it just speculation?

Leslie Benzies already said in the interview with Digital Trends, that originally GTA: Vice City was didn't planned from the very start. Here is what he said:

Quote

In the early design meetings there were very few cities and regions on Earth that didn't get pitched as a potential setting. We thought about revisiting London and a few other places but Sam was very keen on Miami with his love of the Miami Vice series.

There was this when they registered a bunch of trademarks for GTA Tokyo, Bogota, Sin City. Nothing ever really came out of that.

I'm pretty sure GTA Sin City was the original name for GTA San Andreas.

They registered Sin City and San Andreas around the same time though.

Hmmm nice bike

I wouldn't be surprised if the German magazines saying that there was going to be GTA Berlin or whatever was just a load of bullsh*t. A GameStop employee I came across once back in 2007 blatantly lied about where GTA IV would be set like if he knew what was happening with the development.

The legit unreleased GTAs that we know of are the ports of GTA 1 to the N64 and Sega Saturn, and Grand Theft Auto: Online Crime World (funny how GTA Online would eventually become a thing, and with this plus the fact that GTA III has leftover assets for multiplayer shows that they clearly had the idea for a long time).

I think that originally GTA: Sin City was called GTA: Online Crime World. But according to this site, later GTA: Online Crime World was changed name to GTA: Sin City.

Just my own two cents, but I'm pretty shocked that it seems like had it been DMA Design's dithers, Vice City entering the 3D universe wouldn't have happened and would've stayed 2D, with the developers

opting to exploit other locales for GTA titles. I mean, given all the time and effort that really came to life in GTA Vice City, it's shocking that it would seem the only reason the game was made was because

their Uncle Sam (Houser, LOL) told them to do it.

Like I said, just my own thoughts.

The only 'cancelled' GTA title I know existed for sure is the original version of Advance which was pretty much a straight demake of III for GBA rather than a standalone story/prequel.

Grand Theft Auto set in Miami '80s was originally planned before GTA 3. Here is what Sam Houser told EDGE magazine:

Quote

When we were doing the London pack on the first GTA, the idea we had after that was to do Miami in the ’80s, but for one reason or another it didn’t come together.

I'm surprised the forum never blew up with this information. I know it's a 2D era GTA we knew next to nothing about. But this is the biggest piece evidence we'll probably ever have pointing to the existence of a canceled GTA title, short of Ash ever showing us this mystic document discussing the V DLCs.
