Crime Museum

So, if you're anything like me, you kind of miss a lot of the lore which was built up during the 3D era of the series. People, places, that kind of thing. But of course, that time has passed, and we have a new continuity. But still, it would be nice to continue to flesh out the world and - whether we go to Vice City next time or San Fierro or wherever - make the setting feel more lived-in, with a greater sense of history.

So what about an interactive museum in the next game, full of exhibits showing the criminal history of the setting? So, if we are in Vice City, you could have an entire display on Tommy Vercetti, offering players some resolution to his story decades after the events of the game. As well as being a fun nod to older players, this would also give areas of the game map added significance, because you would know things which happened there, or old characters who lived there. Which I imagine would really help the sense of exploration the games have always encouraged.

And if Rockstar really wanted to have a little fun, they could even fill the museum with old 3D models of characters and vehicles. Giving the player a visual reference of how far the series has come, and again just being a nice call back to the roots of Grand Theft Auto and breaking the fourth wall a little. Personally, I'd go one further and make the whole thing the ultimate prize for 100% completion. A new shirt or a trophy achievement is all well and good, I guess. But if players put in all that time and effort to finishing the game to that degree, wouldn't it be cool to give them a proper reward which opens up new things to see and do which they couldn't experience unless they did it?

I mean, I certainly understand how as creators they wanted a clean break to try new ideas. But at the same time, I have never shaken the feeling that kind of paving over everything you did in the past kind of damages some of the appeal to people who have been playing the series since its earliest days. You can show reverence for what came before, whilst still telling new stories and attempting new ideas.

I don't think it makes sense. I prefer Easter Eggs and indirect references in dialogues, billboards, in game media and clothing.

I agree with both. A whole dedicated museum is a bit over the top - but I also think how they completely abandoned the old era games was a bit dumb. I'd like to see same characters in both universes and place names etc.

Missed opportunity in V. I like to think of the GTA 3 era games existing as movies in the HD universe. They should have created a character who was the actor who played CJ or Tommy who is down on his luck now since his recent films have been flops, has had trouble getting work, and has developed a drug addiction. Would have been a great opportunity for Michael and the movie studio to help him make his comeback.

Instead of an actual interactive museum I wouldn't mind an encyclopedia or something like the Assassin's Creed games that has detailed information on places, characters etc that you can access from the menu. This could include all GTA eras and have things like concept art, early BETA photos etc.

i enjoy reading stuff like this. It would be like an in game GTA Wiki.

Maybe not a museum, but something along the lines of a TV/Internet doccumentary that briefly mentions it, like a show similar in format to John Bunnell's 'World's Wildest Police Videos'.

The first thing that came to my mind was an episode of Black Mirror called Black Museum. Maybe R* could put a musem like that on some dusty stretch of highway. And if the player decided to enter the building it would trigger a mission filled with easter eggs referencing crimes from the previous games. I kind of want R* to do it now

If they do that, they could also bring Ray Liotta back (with a truckload of money, after what happened the last time)....and have him play a fictionalized parody of himself! Sort of like with Phil Collins appearing in VCS. You find Ray Liotta down on his luck, complaining about getting nothing but offers to do prescription medication commercials, some guys try to kill him, you rescue him, and by the end of his string of missions you unlock a new talk radio station hosted entirely by Ray Liotta.

Honestly, when we heard there would be a criminal database in Grand Theft Auto IV, this was exactly what I was anticipating we'd see. I mean, at this point, what would be the harm? Like when fans ask "What happened to Donald Love?" they could actually use something like you describe to give an actual answer rather than some cop-out non-answer. Just a little bit of text and you flesh out the lore, please long-time fans, and make the newer games feel at least a little more connected to the past.
