Trust me, I said that with GTA Online a lot of times. You'll be back when the next update comes around, it's just how it goes.

Yeah, but it’s a diminishing return.

A game that keeps providing new stuff for people to do with regular updates stops people from exhausting older content.

Someone who likes bounty hunting will be diverted to engage in moonshining for a month or two before going back to bounty hunting for a month before a new update provides fresh content to explore.  The bounty hunting (or trading, or showdowns etc) never quite goes completely stale because the steady release of new content diverts people away from their regular routine before they get completely sick of it.

Everyone else I know has had jack of the game and quit.  Not because of bugs, just boredom.  I reached my limit probably about 2 months ago.  My daily streak kept me going for 5 minutes a day for another few weeks.  I’ve dropped in a few times to buy some stuff on special, but haven’t been able to muster any enthusiasm to stay on long enough to do anything that I used to enjoy.

I’m sure I’ll come back when the next update hits, max out the new roles to level 20, do any new story missions there might be and probably do the next outlaw pass, but I won’t be sticking around long after that.  The deadtime between the last update and now has been so long that I have sucked dry every aspect of the game that I used to enjoy.

Lol, yep that is a new one for me too. I know we have those thrill seeker random encounters that are asking for photo's, but I've never heard Cripps actually talk about them before. Might be new dialogue put in place to get people to take notice of the encounter mission?

Well I've never heard it before so there! 😉 Honestly that is the first time I've ever heard that coming from him, the only other real new dialogue I have ever heard him say was something about how the dog was starting to grow on him. But that was only one time and it's been the same old stories and asking me why I would ever touch my flea ridden dog ever since. Thanks for the clarification @4thgear, so it's not really meant for a hint at the new role.

What do you think is the reason why R* already teases the next GTAO update in their newswires ("Look out for more details in the coming weeks on future updates to GTA Online") but not the next RDO update?

Could it be that those 2 teams just follow different strategies? Is it a sign that the GTAO update might actually drop earlier? Or could it just mean that the RDO team only wants to say something when they can properly announce something with info and maybe surprise us?

Since the next RDO update might drop in June, I don't think it will only include the Photographer role. The real damaging lockdown started around March for the RDO team as far as I'm concerned, roughly 4 weeks before the supposed internal update date (early April). So if the next update drops in June, they had 8-12 extra weeks for development. Even though the lockdown slowd productivity, I don't believe they need 300% more time just to finish up the update. Especially because I don't believe they planned 4 months just for one role initially.

What do you think of the concept of 2 roles coming in the next update? I thought about the lawman, since they talked about it multiple times.

I know, many questions ^^

Rockstar says that line in every GTA Online article, it reached a point where it no longer refers to an actual update, but simply whatever is coming next to GTA Online such as new events and contact missions.

As for Red Dead Online, I do hope we receive more than one role in the next update, but what's known for now, is that the Photographer role will be featured. I think Rockstar decided to start off with this role because of Rockstar Editor, it fits the theme and makes sense to release the role alongside the Editor assuming it's nearly done.

Legendary Animals possibly featured in the next update is a big deal. It would allow them to add in Talismans & Trinkets plus the Trapper and maybe provide some sort of upgrade to your Trader business.

Also, don't you think it's more suitable to feature the lawman role with the outlaw role instead of adding it up with the photographer?

There was a damn good reason why single player had us playing as the badass outlaw Arthur Morgan rather than that adorable photographer guy whose arse Arthur kept saving.

...f*ck they better have written in a bunch of gunfighters for us to shoot, loot and photograph.

IMO, photographer doesn’t merrit a separate role. It maybe fun as a dynamic open world event, but a role...., nah.

Agreed, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.

I thought races in this game would be lame, but I actually enjoy many of them.

This is why I'll give them some leeway before deciding whether I like the new content, there's likely some additions that will affect gameplay that may well make it worth while.

Crafting goes a long way to personalizing the game experience, and more variety adds interest to functionality.

I really hope they realize this.

This long of a wait, for photography?

Back in March I loved the idea of a photography role. Now though, it just isn't substantial enough. If they do treat it as a full-fledged role, they've gotta add additional roles or other "main features" to accompany it.

At the very least this dlc has to have major bug fixes for everything currently plaguing the game, several overhaul-tier new features (taking pictures and skinning a white elk won't cut it), and not create any new massive bugs (to be patched 6 months later). Anything short of this, the wait will not have been worth it.

If the current weekly/fortnight event is any indication of when something new might role out, and a Photographer role is the thing they come up with, y'all know what to expect next.

This is the longest wait for new content and the last one we've seen wasn't worth a 4 months wait already.

The way this game has developed over the first year, including the support, is a good indication of how much Rockstar values their playerbase.

The only right way to respond to them is to do exactly the same to them.

Makes sense and I also thought so.

But if the outlaw role actually includes the anticipated robberies, a massive Outlaw update could stand on its own legs, without the lawman role. While I don't think the Photographer will be big enough. That's why they'll probably introduce the editor, legendary animals, collector updates and dynamic events at the same time. Maybe a second role more on the level of the Photographer like a fisherman role could be possible, to finally make use of fish and boats.

Every time i hear about the photographer role being the next new content... i think back to when Blizzard did the selfi camera as new content for WoW... got about the same response as this is getting... lukewarm at best. I will remain optimistic though.

Photographer as a role could be cool but it absolutely cannot come as the only role in the next update, that'd be bad. I'm expecting 3 roles at this point personally. Hopefully with a lot of other improvements and additions too, the game needs more than new roles.

Lol, getting flashbacks now. It was a bigger thing on RP servers, but probably the least used feature on any other. 😂

Yeah, I hope so too. In one of my earlier posts I outlined my wishlist for the next update, but at the same time I wanted to be as realistic as possible. So after going through everything R* has said and verified leaks, I came up with the Photographer as the expansion of the collector, the lawman as the expansion of the bounty hunter, and the fisherman as an expansion to trader next to the moonshiner.

Found it (these could be the other additions you mentioned. But if we actually get something on the scale of that, and it doesn't even have to be exactly that, this would be a massive update and honestly too good to be true):

Thanks to the findings of Fun2, we now know that there is the possibility for an update to the moonshiner role in the form of some new gameplay.

We know from leaks and interviews that legendary animals could be added as well as updates to the collector with new collections and unique items that require the help of posse.

So R* didn't lie when they said they plan to update existing roles in the future.

For the next update I expect a bunch of improvements and additions to existing roles that will surprise people.

Moonshiner - New event

Trader - Legendary Animals

Collector - New collections and items

- Bounty Hunter - BH Wagon customization?

And more...

Fisherman Role anybody? Lawman? Photographer?

Could the next update be bigger than expected?

Leaks of new dynamic events and ability cards, as well as recent findings like potential moonshiner enhancements at least give the impression of a big update coming early June.

Fisherman - Next trader/moonshiner expansion - 35 Gold

Photographer - Collector expansion - 25 Gold

Lawman - Bounty Hunter expansion - 25 Gold

Outlaw Pass 3 - 45 Gold

I played that game for 13 or 14 years of which 10 almost religiously. RDO could benefit from a lot of other content from WoW, like dungeons and raids. Heck, even a reputation system might pull RDO out of the slob. Pet Battles might even add activity :D :D

Besides the selfie cam, pet battles is another bad idea Blizzard came up with :D

Can see it happening. Buy and train a rooster, go to St Denis China Town and attend in illegal rooster fights :D

It needs content for stuff not already in the game. You can already take photos or fish to your heart's content in the game already. Roles for these features would probably add a monetary reward value, outfits you'll never use and a useless rank cap. Nothing the game really needs, since most of it is already in there.

IMO, new roles is something the game doesn't need at all, but if they add them, I hope they add a lot more depth to them.

The things that kept WoW alive for so long... was NOT professions which are what i feel their "roles" are, but story which is what RDO is lacking. Since there is no gear grind here to keep people busy, perhaps some story driven content. Without some kind of backdrop, content will feel lacking imo. You cannot compare the two, i get that. But if you look at what gives other MMOs lasting power and compare that to RDO, you realize this game is lacking. They need to come up with a reason players WANT to log in everyday and not just for gold chips... those will only go so far and like most of us, we have enough already to last a lifetime. :D

Story driven content doesn't go far and is by no means the main driving force behind people sticking with MMO's, progression and player created goals are. You need repeatable content that is rewarding long term and for that you need a reward system with lots of paths - RDO's right now is just money and gold bars.

This is probably the main reason why so many major publishers and studios have dabbled in loot games because loot is one of the easiest ways to create long term rewarding gameplay loops - albeit most console-y looter shooters have dog turd loot.

GTAO just about gets by cause it has a huge variety of stuff you can buy with that money but RDO doesn't have that right now.

Another thing that keeps WoW alive a long time is the community. Professions added a lot there. The stuff you created was actually useful to play end game content at high level. Here, in this game, roles only benefit your own character. I am sure that, if items had stats that really matter, roles like Engineering, Enchanting or even Tailoring and Alchemy would be a great addition to this game. But, like you said, RDO lacks in just about all those areas, so it's useless :D :D

I sort of disagree on this point.

In GTA:O, I'm free to create my own story out there, while here, I'm set upon and served up to be part of other playstyles' story in RDRO.

I really need that freedom to find peace and not have to keep being too cautious of other players looking to do all sorts to halt that for me.

My point was specifically about official story content, not player freedom and that style of emergent gameplay and story telling. That's important to any game, making your own stuff up to do, which is what I meant by player created goals. But story content in particular in games like this, MMO's, MMO-lite's such as RDO/GTAO/Destiny, etc, people enjoy the story and it will get them back with most updates but it does not keep them.

If they're adding shallow grindy roles, they might as well add something opposite to Bounty Hunters; Contract Killers. Go to an NPC of ie. Del Lobos and get a contract to kill a head honcho of the Murfree Brood. Get some cash and maybe gold nuggets for it and maybe even some reputation gain, which allows you to buy specific goods at the corresponding faction's vendor. Think of special weapons with better stats or cosmetics specifically tied to that faction. Higher rep means better contracts and better items. There are several factions in this game, so they could stretch it to some extend and players have something to work towards, although still shallowly. Can even make them legendary contracts.
