The Stand-up Comedy & Podcast Thread

Recommended Posts

Mister Pinkerton

Here's a new comedy thread that focusses on stand-up comedians, many of whom have their own podcasts too.

I love stand-up comics and their podcasts. I love listening to how their stories about bombing, the anxieties they have, and the general type of broken person that stand-up comedy attracts.  The surge of podcasting in the last 5 years has given an explosion to the comedy scene. The podcasts offer great insight into a comedians mind and there's usually some good conversation and funny views on the world.

Some excellent podcasts I like to hear comics talk and often with other comedians (no order):

Joe Rogan Podcast

WTF with Marc Maron

Bill Burr's Monday Morning (and Thur) Podcast

Tom Segura and fellow comic and wife Christina P's Your Moms House

Joey Diaz's Church of What's Happening Now

Bert Kreischer's BertCast

Tom Green's Web-O-Vision

Recently I discovered TigerBelly , Bobby Lee's podcast and Robert Kelly's You Know What Dude podcast.

Obviously, a lot of these comedians were established but the likes of Tom Segura said that it was platforms like Netflix and the internet that really accelerated his career from doing clubs to theatres. Marc Maron to me isn't a great stand-up guy but his interview style is superb. I listen to that guys podcast and rarely ever listen to his stand up. His career was practically drying up until he got WTF podcast off the ground. I would say Rogan is the same for me. I don't really like this stand up but I love his interviews with other comics.

So, what stand-up comedians do you like? Any podcasts from comedians you like?  Tom Green was really ahead of the curve with his Webovision show which was like a video podcast from back in 2006 where he would take live Skype calls!  So many people are doing that now. His stand-up is actually great now and his Netflix special is great.

You can check Biswa Kalyan Rath's YouTube Channel. Biswa’s sense of humor is like one of those college mates or school mates who always come up with something witty but hilarious to say at any given situation. Most of his tales or incidents are real life satires. He repeatedly points out irony certain Indian traditions or cultures. There are English subtitles on his videos while the language is Hindi. The way he talks, the way he explains, his standup is hands down one of the most raw and genuinely funny in the current scenario.

Not one do delve into podcasts really, but didn't know comedians do so might just have to have a look into it all.

For me though, Lee Evans really is my favourite stand up comedian. Grew up on that dude's shows and have all on DVD, anytime he pops up on Comedy Central, it's just a guilty pleasure and kinda have to, lol.

Do like a bit of Jimmy Carr and Mickey Flanagan is hilarious, and Russell Howard is always a great watch too.

Not a podcast but I was a fan of the Opie and Anthony show when it was on a few years ago.

They would often have stand up comedians on as guests like Andrew Dice Clay, Jay Mohr and Patrice O'Neal in fact one of their hosts Jim Norton was a full time stand up comic.Jim Norton is the only stand up comic that I've ever seen live when he came to my city because I was a fan of the show.

Most of what I know about stand up comedy I learned by listening to O&A.

Since this is a GTA forum I also have to bring up that this is Anthony's voice in this  GTA V ad :D

Mickey Flanagan and Jimmy Carr are brilliant. Could never really get in to Lee Evans. His success is crazy though. Didn't he retire recently?

Yeah, the podcasts are great if you are have to do a task on your computer, travel or some other things. I'd recommend Marc Maron for you, purely because you're bound to find a really interesting guest you like. Some of my favourite episodes are of him interviewing film directors.

Dude, Opie & Anthony are great. Well, Anthony is 😛 Yeah man, Patirice O'Neal is will never be replaced. His unique take on life was so ballsy and hilarious.  I love listening to Jimmy's stories when he meets celebs. Was just listening to his story about seeing Nicholas Cage on a plane. Cringey and hilarious.

And about Anthony Cumia, yeah, he's good friends with Lazlow. I used to see Cumia were Rockstar t-shirts and always thought it was great too see. I was listening to O&A for a year or two before I realized it was him doing the Piswasser.  What ad did he do in GTA V?

I'll have to check some out for sure. But yeah, Lee Evans did retire a couple of years back. I think I liked him as he's just so full of energy and as a younger viewer, I was too, lol. Wasn't much into stand up in my late teens or twenties too much (music and cars). But as I got older, it grew on me more and more.

Peter Kay is another I found fun, lots of relatable stuff, and I watched a documentary about Bill Hicks so need to check so.e of his stuff out too. Heard a lot of Good, and I don't mind a bit of weird, lol. We'll see soon, ha-ha.

I was hoping Lee Evans would step more into acting too. By no means a Pacino or anything, but very entertaining in the few bits I've seen. But he made a mint off the circuit and DVD sales I'll bet, and put in some years too so can't blame the man for stepping back to make time for the family too. :)

Yeah, I remember his performance in There's Something About Mary. Was pretty good.

Peter Kay is good and Bill Hicks is great but if you want to a good introduction to every comics favourite comic, then try George Carlin. He was greatest.

George Carlin's 7 Words that you can't say is classic. It's really clever, even if the subject matter isn't. Especially since he touches on the point that offence is taken, no given. What's offensive one person isn't to another so we can just pander to everyone's "list" of things they are offended by.

@Mister Pinkerton.

I didn't recognise the name, but I know of George Carlin for sure. You're not wrong, the 'seven words' line is up there with the best, lol.
