RDR 1 vs RDR 2: Soundtrack

Recommended Posts

My preference...

Background score in free-roam: RDR > RDR2

Missions Music: RDR2 > RDR

Songs: RDR2 > RDR

Both games try to invoke a different atmosphere/vibe.

It's set partly in the South and Appalachian area, of course it has that vibe.

I never criticized them for using that certain sound, in fact, they did hit the nail on the head of fitting it into the atmosphere of the game. I just preferred RDR 1's "western touch" with it being a cowboy game. But that's just me.

Suprised by you're thoughts on Deadman's Gun, but a welcome one as I can see your reasoning for it for sure. From my understanding, it seems to rank amongst the top along with Far Away in terms of people's "goat" RDR series song.

It's a rare take, I know. I vastly prefer "Far Away" - that song made me a Jose Gonzalez superfan, pretty much - and also "Compass," which is a really neat song (very unlike most of that singer's other music, stylistically) that fits that particular moment in the story incredibly well.  "Dead Man's Gun" is just trying a little too hard or something, and musically it's got a very conventional chord progression and melody that feels very 1990s to me.  I didn't have any such issue with any of the songs in RDR2 - though I like some better than others, I really like them all.

All of the ambient music is queued by location, it was more noticeable in RDR1 but it's true in RDR2 as well. The Great Plains and New Austin ambient music are variations on their RDR1 music. I know you can glitch into Mexico, I wonder is the ambient music in Mexico different from what is in New Austin?

The ambient music in and around Mexico is the same music from mexico in RDR1

That did "Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie" for me with William Eliott Whitmore. Never heard of him before that song came up, and now I'm in love with so many of his songs. As someone said in a YT comment, he sounds like he eats glass and rocks and drinks ashtrays.

Haven't noticed it's a RDR 1 variation. Good ear my man.

I think both soundtracks of RDR1 and RDR2 are very good, there are some great moments or missions when you hear them and the music makes that experience very special. (like when you get first to Mexico with Irish in rd1)

btw ,my special favorites from RDR1 are Far Away and Triggernometry. / and  from RDR2 the Fleeting Joy Battle theme and the Prologue fight theme. 😉

Gonna say tried creating a Pandora station using Unshaken as a seed. Bad idea. It only plays f*cking R&B. Definitely not cowboy music.

May I stand unshaken amidst tons of booty music? :(

My favorite song.

Also I prefered all the songs with lyrics in this game compared to RDR1.

For me, soundtrack might be the only thing where the first installment beats the new. Might be.

Btw, I really like the Morricone stylish jingle that plays when you embark on a stagecoach fast travel in RDR2. Anyone know if there's a longer version of that somewhere around the interwebs?

I like roughly the same number of song from each soundtrack.  Deadman's Gun being my favorite but I like "That's the way it is" from 2 nearly as much.

Personally I found the Ambient sounds and music to mostly be better in 1.

Buiiggest problem-take that little tune Arthur sings as an example-it came across as recorded over something in the game like watching a National Geographic show with some Loons on a lake making their eerie calls then the background announcer starts describing it twice as loud as the background-out of place.  Or maybe watching Gold, just some wind noise, crowd of people in hushed anticipation and suddenly the sportscaster goes "ARE YOU READY TO RUUUUUUUMBLLLLLEEEEE?!?!?!"

Plus I tend to hate Redneck music...'My dog diead, my horse died, my wife left me....'   They say if you play Rock backwards you hear the Devil.  Play country backwards and your wife comes back, you get a new truck, your dog weasn't actually dead...

Red Dead Redemption 2 got to be this one for me

RDR was

I think both games have standout musical themes and some of the best OST I've heard on a video game. I might be biased because I love this western theme too much

RDR1 had the superior soundtrack overall. Plus the mission complete jingles were sorely missed. The Stranger mission complete sounds and so many others were all so memorable.

LOL, haven't heard that one, made me laugh out loud, even though I do like me some country myself.

Piggsy pls

Was gonna say the first game had the better soundtrack, but after listening to both (ripped from the first game/recorded in the second), I'll have to give it to RDR2. Some of the wanted and mission themes in the second game are just too damn epic not to be the winner. Although I do think the ambient themes in the first game are better, plus Far Away is still the best among the vocal songs.

RDR1 definitely gets the edge with regards to the ambient free roam music, not even close IMO. But if we're talking the unique scores for missions then RDR2 gets that hands down, the music is simply incredible.

Does anyone know the music that plays during this mission? Cant seem to get an ID for it

RDR. I liked the little jingle in rdr when the revolver span and shot when the game started up. And at the end of a mission.

I was on my phone while in RDR2 menu and the RDR 1 menu music started playing. My ear immediately catched that awesome ambient music from the original. Has anyone else noticed that. Super cool!

I think RDR1 has that authentic western feel. Untouchable.

However, RDR2's soundtrack is getting better with age the more I hear it. The ambience of exploring never sounded any better.

If I had to pick one, I'd go with RDR1. I still get chills when I hear Born Unto Trouble.

RDR 1 Cholla Springs and Armadillo ambient music gives me chills. Also Mexico ambient music is all around perfect.

As far as non-vocal music goes, the original RDR destroys RDR2. 2’s soundtrack is good, but it feels more generic to be honest. RDR1 music can be mischievous, chilling, epic, violent, gritty, haunting, you name it. It has so much character, it’s unbelievable. For example, the little sting that plays when you find out who the cannibal is, it’s like the game itself is smirking and shaking its head. Musical moments like this punctuate the entire game, often happening completely dynamically without any scripting. It’s phenomenal.

The music in RDR2 is missing Bill Elm, and it shows. Some of the ambient tracks is like listening to a violin concerto with just the violin, or no violin, like the piece is missing some vital element. Listening to music from the first game, there was a lot of excitement and harmonica play in the score that is absent in the second game. But I think Red Dead 2 does the quieter moments a little bit better.

I'd say overall Red Dead 1's soundtrack was a bit better, but there are moments of music in Red Dead 2 that are just as good or better (e.g. Unshaken, the music when you raid Braithwaite Manor)

Why RDR2 didn't used music like this in free roam ? I swear this is one of the best ambient music i heard in RDR2 and it's only used in one mission can't remember where

I think I’ve heard this play a few times in saint denis, its a beautiful piece.

Sadly the only part I know for sure it plays is the bank robbery.

Something about the piano used in the RDR ambient music hit harder. You look up to the sky to see the light trying to break through the clouds, it feels so 1911-14.
