Its a tie between vcs and iv for me, but i definitely preferred vcs if i had a choice. Theres just so many ways to finish your opponent in that game, not to mention the ability to snap necks. Definitely the most warriors-esque of all the games.

The worst were definitely 3, vice city and arguably lcs. 3 and VC are early games, but from an objective standpoint, the melee combat on both games felt unimpactful and cartoony with only a few fun weapons like the golf club, chainsaw and katana. Fighting is entirely based on luck and the sound effects weren't that great. LCS improved on that fighting style, but only very marginally.

While I think the fighting in GTA V could be improved a lot, I personally think it gets too much hate, and I had fun with it. Sucker punching people was always fun in that game, and I like how unassuming and visceral the punches sounded. In real life, street fights don't last long, which could have been an interesting detail to add to the game if everything else wasn't as wacky.

Best: Tossup between VCS and IV

Worst: I have to give it to V. While III's combat is far more primitive compared to later games (as is VC's, but that game does offer more melee weapons for you to mess around with), at least it's still somewhat challenging, even if that "difficulty" comes from said simplicity. The peds in V, on the other hand, are literal pushovers that die after a single punch more often than not.
