Best & Worst Characters of 2018

2018 brought us a lot of characters. new faces, familiar faces & fresh talent. Who would you consider The Best Character of 2018 & who would you consider The Worst Character of 2018?

Best character for me was English Dave, by a mile.

 

Worse has to be Alan Jerome, purely because I'm sick of his voice

Gotta agree with English Dave as a new favorite. Funny but not obnoxious; unique from all other characters.

Worst, for me, is the yet-again revived Lazlo Jones.
His comedic presence had the appeal of a last season Steve Urkel, except without the originality of the original Lazlo, who was tolerable, at best.

I wish we'd seen more of William "Willy" McTavish, bass player of Love Fist, who made his appearance in GTAV, but not enough as a standout, in my opinion.
I love the idea of keeping Love Fist en vogue, over say, Lazlo.

Best. The Black Madonna.  For her personality and for bringing a little Vice City glory to her playlist. Was a wonderful surprise in the final weeks of Afk Hours content.

 

Worst. Paige. Do I need to explain? at least the recent update was kind enough to stop the calls.

What, no option for Coleco Vee?  Fine, I'll start my own best character vote, with blackjack and hookers

 

English Dave seemed to start off as an annoyance but he's actually pretty cool to be honest. Could have done with a lot more from him actually - Different from most of the other cynical caricatures that inhabit the GTA franchise these days. "Characters" like Alan Jerome are a dime a dozen and every one of them is totally forgettable. They also knocked any personality out of Tony Prince this time too, which just makes me sad.

 

Worst - Tale Of Us. Because f*ck that collection mission in the Stafford, f*ck their lame dreary set and, most of all, f*ck their f*cking voice acting. Or, I should say, complete and utter lack of it.

 

I am not a fan.

Best, Tony. Not for any particular reason, I just don't really like any of the others and he at least has nostalgia.

 

Worst, Paige. The constant phone calls have ruined her. They've ruined the name for anyone on earth called Paige. Anyone I meet called that, I'm going to instantly dislike them for the rest of my life, and it's all Rockstar's fault.

Best: I like Bryony. Seems like a real enough character, but I've only had youtube coverage of the AW intro cutscene and her in game phone calls to go by.

 

Worst: Alan Jerome. Just doesn't seem to fit his role or the game as a whole, again just judging from the intro cutscene.

 

Even Lazlow has some point in the game (Tony's lacky), though it isn't much and certainly wouldn't be missed...at all.

 

Whoever is in charge (and I assume it's probably many people over the years) of creating characters and assigning them roles in game have been either schizoid whackos, or total potheads with no memory capacity left.

Random is a type of order, after all!

Best – Black Madonna. She's a doer, not a talker and her music forced me to actually change the music volume from 0. Something that was like that for at least 3 years in this game for me. 

Worst – Paige. Barely able to see hers but listening to her crap is annoying. However, second worst is Tony Prince, because whoever this impostor R* put into the game is, he's not Tony from TBOGT.

I struggled with Best Character.  I was going to choose Paige, simply because her missions have made me a TON of money, but then her same repeated drivel during her Terrorbyte missions are annoying as hell.  I chose English Dave in the end because some of his moments genuinely made me lol.

 

Worst Character was easily Gay Tony for me.  Again, its another character that talks to you like a piece of sh*t, with his annoying arrogant voice whilst the lazy twat does f*ck all the whole time except snort coke.  I'm your boss you muggy little prick.  You're in my nightclub and I'm paying your wages.  Learn some respect, crackhead.

 

Oh and Tony, I know how to f*cking fly a Cargobob, you don't need to tell me every god damn f*cking time.

i wish to see english dave again,
i hope we have a decent casino heist soon, and i wish it to be like ocean's 11 or 12 with lazlow, tony, and english dave envolved. no futuristic or  apocalyptic themes; 

just the nightclub crew and lester, and nothing but the nostalgia and calmness and fun.

 

 

but goddamitt, rockstar in a dimension and the players in the other so i don't expect that.. 

tbh nothing satisfied me more than those missions when we fisrt set up the night club, black benefactor with tony's name on the plate, riding wiht english dave to bring solomun in that overcast afternoon, osaka trade on the radio and a long way to the airport.. that's gta for me. big up the london massive.

English Dave is easily my favourite character of the year, and one of my favourites of the whole game really, proper geezer. Black Madonna of the DJ's gets runner up as I really enjoy her set as much as the enthusiasm I feel she's got to be in the game.

 

Paige gets the downvote, after I don't know how many TB missions, she still goes on and on plus her phone calls prior to Arena War seemingly fixing that was a joke. A female Lester to me, just annoying. Tale of Us are the DJ's I liked least, set-wise (though still decent music overall) and them being out of their comfort zone with the voice recording was horribly noticeable at the time.

When I think about it they are all bad and pretty damn annoying and its been that way since gtao started.

Why does R not make likeable characters? Its almost as if they make them all not likeable purposely, wtf.

For me, it's a tossup between English Dave and Paige Harris - better in the heist missions than when the Terrorbyte came out.  Best

 

Worst - Tale Of Us - Everything about them is just sh*t./Paige Harris thanks to the Terrorbyte xD. Talk about double standards xD.

best 1018 character is Lazlow , he is funny at least ( I never forget the day I found him crying on the floor of my Nightclub , talking about marrying a fat girl etc.. lool , I laughed so hard  )

worst is English Dave . Not only he is annoying ,  he made me pay 100k for the Tale of Us as he annoyed me with his call and I accidently pressed the "OK" button ... I´m very surprised he is nr.1 best character right now (!!!)

Definitely Paige for the worst character. I can't just sweep 4 months of constant nagging under the rug like nothing happened.

 

Alan comes next, I only played AW for a couple of days & I already want to kick his ass.

This could've been an elimination game hosted by Amy (ofc no offence @IceDree ) Anyway, nice read and well selected.

For starters, can't personally include the real-life DJs, because ehh, it's more judging non-actors for their acting ability in one mission (particularly when only one of 'em speaks English as a first language!). Marea did the best out of the five of them (four acts, five people) because of that (and it helped that she was so enthusiastic as to want some input on the mission itself), but I'm not holding it against the others for making the best of 'read random lines out of context'. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 

Best: English Dave, for not being a typical grating "MY DIALOGUE CONSISTS ENTIRELY OF YELLING MY STEREOTYPICAL CHARACTER TRAITS AT YOU!" R* side character, like so many are in the HD-era games. In fact, he almost feels like he wandered over from the more low-key 3D-era titles - if you'd told me he was actually a throwback from Vice City, I'd have believed you.

 

Runner-up: Bryony - she's unfortunately saddled with being the 'spams you with constant calls to buy sh**' character of Arena Wars, but it's nice to have a GTA character whose stereotype is simply 'put-upon', and not 'loathsome'. Come to think of it, she's basically Kinzie from Saints Row, and Kinzie was a fun character, so...

 

 

Worst: Alan Jerome - not for being the most grating, or the worst performance, but just for being such an empty shell of a character. Bryony actually comes across like a human being (rare for GTA!) - meanwhile this guy falls into the aforementioned 'talks by rattling off a list of stereotypes from the casting description' trap. As characters go, he's about as half-assed as the clothing selection in this latest update.

 

Runner-up: Paige. I liked Paige in GTA V - nice to have one of the team be a normal person, to balance out yet more screaming caricatures. So of course R* had to make her an angry snarker with Heists, and then lean even harder into that with After Hours (while giving her 'nagging telesales' duty for the f***ing "Terrorbyte" into the bargain... ). But again, at least there was a more nuanced take in there to begin with - same reason why I can't totally hate GTA V/Online Lazlow for being interminable, considering he  started off as an amusingly grounded foil to the wackier characters in GTA III.

BEST: Solomun - I enjoyed his mission, he put in a decent cameo (voice) performance and had banging tunes.

WORST: Lazlow -  An old and tiresome character.  I get it, he's the Big-In-Japan 80s has-been but enough please.

 

Also, who is Alan Jerome?  I don't recall that name.
