Playing as young Arthur in RDR3?

Recommended Posts

DEALUX

Anyone else think it would be awesome to play as Arthur again in another prequel? I don't know how doable it is, but there is an area near Van Horn, across the river, that's a potential next location. I can't imagine them creating a better character than Arthur though I said the same thing about John in RDR1.

Personally I rather they just use new characters unrelated to RDR 2.

Either way, I think the next game will be terrific as well. They are on a roll with these games. Though I don't know where I will be 8-10 years from now.

Dan Houser has hinted that he might have a third RDR story to tell, if this one (2nd) is well received. I'd imagine that by this he means he has a story in mind that bears some connection with the first two installments, although this is pure speculation. Whether that story would feature Arthur Morgan as a protagonist or an NPC is anybody's guess.

However, if they decide to connect with the Wild West theme, doing a sequel to RDR1 (let's call it a Jack Marston game) doesn't make much sense, because by the time John and Abigail are dead, America is already on the verge of WW1, and the West is largely tamed. There are still pockets (think Alaska or rural Oklahoma) that could work, but because of these historical realities I do think that IF R* decides to do another 'Redemption' game, I think another prequel is more likely.

Hence, I'm very cautiously optimistic about a RDR3 featuring Dutch, Hosea and young Arthur. Of course a large part of my optimism stems from the fact that this is what I really, really, really want with sugar on top. :)

What I do think is nearly 100% certain is that we'll see a whole new Red Dead game at some point, next gen, maybe, but whether it'll be a 'Redemption' game or a new story with new characters remains to be seen.

The only way another RDR game could work is to go back in time even further, so if it ever happens we might see Arthur again, unless it's a completely different story with a different gang.

I hope not. This whole Dutch van Der linde gang and their downfall has been beaten to death in two games already. It's time to move on to new characters.

Either go back in time to the gold rush or try something else. Just don't use anyone connected to The Van Der Linde gang.

As much as I love Arthur for the next Red Dead game I hope it's an entirely new story with no ties to the Van Der Linde gang.

I reckon they should go with a black protagonist former slave like Django Unchained right at the peak of the West. That would be awesome and refreshing.

I'd rather they do a brand new character/gang that runs parallel in time with Dutch's Boy's.  Maybe even before RDR2.

Any new red dead game (if it happens) needs to stop pussyfooting around American Indians and let us play as a real one, or have savage Indian Wars. Full headdress. They cannot gloss over this huge elephant in the room. I want roaming plains with Huge Indian camps, feuding Indian tribes.

Can't wait for Red Dead Redemption 3, coming fall 2045

Anyways, like many other people on here, I hope the next Red Dead installment has a brand new story, or at least one with few connections to RDR and RDR2.

I would want it to take place at least 20 years before RDR2, sometime during the peak of the American Frontier.

No thanks, I'd like to play as the same character the ENTIRE game for a change.

And no ties to Dutch's gang. If they're active in the time period I wouldn't mind them showing up for a few missions but not as central characters. There's so much they could touch on without revolving around Dutch's boys

HOW'S ANNIE?

Next Red Dead should be a clean slate, almost completely unbound by the stories of the last two. Not that I'm saying we can't have characters reappearing from Redemption and Redemption II. But I don't want another " Dutch Van Der Linde, even earlier years" game.

I'm craving something almost directly post- Civil War. Having the story be set around the shift in the south following the war. If they want to introduce the switch mechanic from GTA V, I think a story about two heroes from both sides of civil war who have to team up to combat a common enemy would work (think the John Wayne classic The Undefeated). Or otherwise something about a former slave, turned outlaw, on the hunt for the former Plantation owner who enslaved him and his family for years. There's a lot of potential in that era.

It first depends on what are their plans for SP DLC for RDR 2. I'd personally love a few smaller stories first(something like EFLC) set before, during or after RDR 2 with a few other gang members playable(Charles, Sadie, Dutch before/after RDR 2, younger Hosea, Javier in Mexico). If they solely focus on RDO from now on, they may use some of that DLC potential and instead develop a full game, rather than new story with no familiar characters.

For their next game, as long as they expand the map again and include the RDR 1 + RDR 2 parts, i'm good whatever story they have in store. Problem with going too much back in the past is, the map would need to be big, yet more barren and empty. I think they messed up a little bit with RDR 1 being so late and set at the actual end of the old west. It should've been set earlier imo. A game revolving around the Gold rush would be great though.

I hope the next red dead has a more cow boy / indians story.

The event could happen around 1860 (or before) and it could be cool if surviving was one of the main objectives. I don't want the next game to be about the industrialisation and all this sh*t (not saying it's uninteresting but it starts to be boring). I also hate that the characters have a 21st century way of thinking and I would love a character who doesn't have to be good.

I wan't to be free in a wild wild west !

I'll go ahead and go against the grain.

I want another prequel, this time playing as Dutch in the good old days. Would be fun to actually build the gang and have successful heists etc.... plus, it would go along with the redemption theme in a way. We know Dutch cannot and does not redeem himself, but it comes full circle and in a way, redeems the franchise.

Agreed with people saying it's time for a clean slate, but not quite so clean- I'd love if old characters came back as supporting/side characters or as strangers. It'll be nice to see them again and to learn more about them (I.e. Dutc, Hosea or Uncle), but their roles would be small enough that we aren't sick of seeing them for the second or third time.

I'd basically make the whole RDR series an extended universe/mythos sort of thing. A whole set of stories that aren't entirely related, but are set in the world Rockstar has created- and occasionally entwine and come in contact with one another.

a red dead redemption game set in the great depression? no

RDR 3 pretty much has to be a prequel because of the wild west era ending but like said before, you don't want to use the same characters too much or it could ruin them

ehh we'll see in 8 years

I think a prohibition era I.P made by R* would be awesome and could definitely see some cues taken from Boardwalk Empire, Road To Perdition etc, but for the Red Dead series no. It needs to be the old west or nothing IMO.

I’d love a game where you go about Mexico as Javier Escuella’s partner in revolutionary dealings. You die in the end as you and Javier are trying to steal some chickens and you go on in the endgame as a young Arthur, part of Dutch’ gang.

I have a hard time seeing them doing a prequel to the prequel. I also can't see the story going anywhere with Jack Marston. I could see a story branched off from the gang however.

Would be fun to play as a Sheriff or Marshall where the honour system can have more of an impact. R* has endless options with the Red Dead universe.

I just hope they don't stray off the games gritty dark story roots.

Yeah I remember him saying that and RDR2 was massively successful so it's definitely more than likely going to happen now, but it'll be another 8-10 year wait like you said. I assume they have the door open for RD3 going back further when John, Arthur, Hosea and Dutch were younger. The door is open as they introduced characters like Davy, Jenny and Mac. The replacements for them in RD2 would be Micah, Sadie and Charles. Lenny had a plot with Jenny. They introduce that Dutch has a love interest and they also talk about the issues between Colm and Dutch. Davy had a full model that goes unused just for a 3 second scene so it was most likely planned to be used. You got the Blackwater massacre and ferry job yet the game won't tell you what exactly what went wrong.

So the door is open, the question would be if they're truly going to go back and if Arthur will be a protagonist again. Rockstar loves changing their protagonists around so probably not. What sucks is we'd be losing characters like Sadies and Charles if they go back further. I really liked Charles as a character.

Same. The reason I love these series is because it was all about John Marston, even RDR2 goes back to John Marston. (I like Arthur better now though and rather play as Arthur again.) I personally wouldn't be slightly put off if other people than Dutch's gang because then it's just basically GTA but in the western times if they keep rotating gangs and protagonists. There is so much about the characters we know nothing about and we only seen them through the end of the outlaw, we never seen what they were like in the beginning. Even Arthur was completely different like Grimshaw mentions. Some of the characters never even had a chance to develop during RDR2.

I'd rather them leave these characters to rest.

They have done a phenomenal job up until now but there's always a chance that they ruin it or miss the mark if they get involved with these characters for a third time. Plus, RDR2 brought a lot of continuity errors with RDR1 and I'm afraid of what it would look like if they made a third game with the same characters.

Nah, new story and characters. Enough of the Redemption theme. There's more to tell in the wild west than an outlaw redeeming himself.

80% of the game will be played as one of the characters that died on the Blackwater job.

the last 20% will be Arthur getting the gang to safety.

👀

i hope i'm wrong. i'd like a new cast in the same RD Universe.

I'm surprised people don't want to see the same characters again. I don't think we will see them but there is still so much to explore with all the members of the gang we got.

Would be fun to play an entire Red Dead game with the gang moral from chapter 2 and 3.
