THBP
Short dystopias close or not to reality that shows how harmful human potential to self-destruction can be, and how it can lead everyone to chaos in a matter of time if everyone's distrait. Target13
Review: Hope in Her Eyes Part 1 (Time Zero) May contain spoilers Usually before writing a review, I wait till a project is done or at least almost done so that I can give a broader perspective and a more thorough review. When it comes to THBP however, you can always be assured that no matter how short or long the missions are, you will always be surprised by how far he can push DYOM's limits. This designer literally makes the "DYOM is dead" argument invalid by releasing innovative and fresh projects frequently. The Dark Instinct is the latest of such projects. From my understanding, this series will tell different (not necessarily connected) stories about the worst possible outcome of different situations. This is the review of the first story: Time Zero. Time Zero takes place in the future sometime after 2045, when the result of war has blocked out the sun and deteriorated the climate, leaving mankind on the brink. We follow a group of survivors who have been around long enough to experience the fall of civilization. We learn that the survivors having been running from a faction called The Aurora Sign, a totalitarian army of mercenaries and soldiers who have effectively replaced The US. Government and control the former United States with an iron fist. The survivors encounter a young woman named Zoey, who claims to have traveled from 2019 in a machine that is now in the hands of the Aurora. Not much is known of the state of the world from the first two mission, instead Time Zero lets us experience this new world from the eyes of Zoey as she slowly learns what has happened. Being a test subject and a prisoner, Zoey feels the anarchy and chaos of post-war America to be liberating. The first two missions have been breathtaking. THBP has mastered the audio feature and put music to very good use. The intro of The Dark Instinct itself was beautiful and clever, having a distorted digital vibe to it. Anyone who is familiar with good TV will immediately feel at home with this designer's cinematography, the combination of a good soundtrack and brilliant camera placement makes for a very immersive and cinematic experience. Something that I very well know should look into using for my own work. A very strong moment for me was towards the end of mission 2, where Zoey looks at an old Confederate flag (which I assume represents the United States) with The Last of Us soundtrack playing in the background. Such a small scene but with a very strong meaning. Zoey looks toward a world gone by, knowing she must do what it takes to return to 2019 and prevent the fall of civilization, how bizar that even may sound. I love symbolism. I love flags. And I loved that THBP used a flag to symbolize the past. (even if it is a disgusting flag, but that's on Rockstar.) In terms of gameplay, if it wasn't already clear from V for Vinegar, this designer knows how to build a world. When the player gets control of a vehicle, they will travel through the ruins of Tierra Robada, cars have been abandoned, trees have fallen and bodies lay rotting. Unlike most post-apocalyptic mission-packs where chaos has recently occurred and cars are left still burning, the world THBP has created presents the world after more than 26 years of decay. It made driving through it very enjoyable. I am ashamed to say I have not played Long Theft Auto, V for Vinegar or The Game. I have not had the time too, but I will make sure to start with The Game as soon as I can. I love telling great stories and looking deep into them. It is what I try to do with my own work. I like a story that leaves you thinking even after you're done playing, this is why I enjoyed this so very much. After a mere two missions, I am left so hungry for more. I am so curious about how Zoey has come to the future, how big the Aurora actually are and what other communities there are. I don't know if Time Zero will answer these questions but I know that I am very excited for more. I will review this series again after Time Zero is completed, focusing mostly on the plot. As for now, I cannot recommend this project enough. THBP, SeanAlgerian and Platinum Card

RithRake24
I never thought I'd ever write a review in GTAForums, but these three amazing missions by @The Half-Blood Prince have been giving me the itch to try my hand at a review. So, obviously, this is my first ever review. Please do not read if you haven't played the missions as they contain heavy spoilers. Spoiler Missions 1 and 2 were amazing, particularly the way the cutscenes were positioned, giving it that professional cinematographer's touch. In a poat-apocalyptic MP like Dark Instinct where setting is a character in itself, THBP ensures that the setting is well-defined, putting in a lot of work to create an immersive gloomy ambience. He ensures that the setting is in fact treated like an important character - well-developed, showing the marks of past events that it has seen. I don't know if it's just me, but the background even looks afraid of the future, on the verge of crumbling under the radioactive waves that have consumed the area. Every element in his missions shouts out "effort". In the gameplay portion where the player is tasked to drive through the desert to their safehouse, even the barriers on the road used to prevent players from driving off the right course blend seamlessly into the environment. The conversations between the characters are very meaningful, consisting of carefully chosen words that reveal much more than is merely said. The type of language used for the dialogue reflects the maturity of the husband and wife, having faced so much in the past years. The way THBP has written the character of the young time-traveller Zoey succeeds in telling multiple things: She is equally amazed by this future reality as she is shocked or afraid, and understandably so as she is new to this setting. As stated above, characters have depth, and the setting feels like a living thing. Combine this with the amazing cutscene positioning of THBP and the end product is a picturesque immersive experience. The music choices also help to build the mood, and while you play the missions, for a while you feel you're no longer a part of the real world. The third mission agrees with all my above opinions, while adding a "breathtaking sequence of gameplay", quoting THBP himself. To those who haven't played THBP missions before, the above quote might seem like a statement made by a proud kid. But THBP lives up to that statement like the experienced designer he is. Each one of those four words is true. Jumping onto the top of the SUV was a creative animation, but the chase sequence with the soldiers hot at your heels was indeed breathtaking, looking like it came straight out of the original GTA game, only with a enhancing musical gloom in the background and an effectively dystopian background setting. The number of actors and vehicles used for the sadly short sequence give a chaotic feel, reflecting the violent, chaotic rule of the Aurora Sign over the residents of the US, while also highlighting the fact that the protagonists are heavily outnumbered and are at a heavy disadvantage over the antagonists. I don't know if THBP intended his audience to feel this way, but when the cutscene played out where a tree came in between their getaway car and the chasing soldiers, I felt as if THBP was providing a wider metaphorical message to the player that even nature despised its own current state and intervened to save the only woman who could possibly revert matters to a much greener state. I've been churning out positives about this mission pack for what seems like ages now, but the only negative I can talk about here is that the gameplay sequence in the 3rd mission could have been longer, it was too painfully short. The 3rd mission overall, I felt, ended too quickly too. However, all in all, this is an MP that really defines perfection and shatters the barriers of the limitations of DYOM. My rating for the first 3 missions: 10/10 Thank you for providing the community with a picturesque spectacle to sink their teeth into. You're an inspiration to rookie designers like me. You've effectively raised the bar of DYOM mission design. Alan Eastwood
Wonderful mission pack, THBP. I played until the last mission at the moment. The music made me feel like I was watching a movie, because adding music to a mission is very useful, is a tool that not many use correctly. You managed to integrate multiple songs in a single audio and match the scenes. The only thing I would have liked more is to know more about the other characters that Zoey is with. But hey, in the meantime I'll keep waiting for the remaining missions. RithRake24
Man, I hate you! Why the hell did the chapter have to end this way?! Wait, hold on a second. I'm just kidding. I loved the last mission and the epilogue, it was very cinematic and dramatic. You did exactly what you said; "Composed by genders such as science-fiction, action and adventure, the stories blends themes like post-apocalyptic scenarios and alternative realities, where all of them have one thing in common: the darkest context possible." Spoiler The epilogue really showed us the darkest context possible. I was immersed in Zoey's immense feeling of loneliness; to be the only person remaining in a reality. Anyone could go insane. What this series really made me reflect on was the fact that advanced technology definitely has its consequences. Ironically, Zoey goes back in time in order to activate a better reality, but ends up in a reality far more devastating than a post-apocalyptic America governed by the destructive Aurora Sign; a reality that opposes the very meaning of reality and existence, simply put, an empty world. The music choices and the cinematography were handled masterfully resulting in an amazing product. It made me really feel for Zoey, who longs to have Northon and Maria back but can only daydream about them in the reality that she eventually ended up in. Also, love, which is the idea that is usually considered to have mainly positive consequences (looking at you, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone), is shown in a whole different light here, where it becomes the core catalyst in the destruction of stable realities by time travel. I liked the unique view on love. It was like getting to see the dark side of the moon (for people who don't know what I'm talking about here, due to the moon's rotation on its axis and its orbit speed, we always see the same side of the moon from Earth and its not possible to see the other "dark side" of the moon from Earth). It was just an unforeseeable plot twist, full stop. Congratulations on an amazing chapter. Just two things that disturbed me: 1) Why did the world where Zoey killed the VP have no other peds or cars in it other than the VP's family? 2) This is a crazy theory, but is Zoey just Sabrinne who got trapped in the wrong reality with no memory of her real past? The way Northon and Maria seem to think Zoey and Sabrinne look the same, with Maria even having a motherly instinct over Zoey... Is the next chapter going to be a sequel to Time Zero, or will it be an entirely new story? Edited March 16, 2019 by RithRake24 THBP
THBP
@RithRake24 Answering some of your questions: 1) Streets were empty in the scene in front of the college because I didn't want those cars to disturb the vibe 2) Sabrinne was a character created to be the reason of a bond between Zoey and the family. I didn't create much besides this, so... no? They're different characters 3) Next chapters will be stories of different realities, and then you can create this theory: they could be consequences of the mess created in Time Zero, so that would turn Dark Instinct into a big multiverse. Zoey or any other character of this episode won't appear in the next ones, however easter-eggs are always welcome in mind RithRake24
