How is Poppy Mitchell on the streets?

I thought this would make for an interesting topic to discuss, so let's begin.

If you've experienced the After Hours DLC, there's no doubt that you bumped into Poppy Mitchell at some point. But the last time we saw her back in 2013, she lead Franklin on a crazy reckless car chase where she wrecks her car and gets convicted for drunk driving. If GTA Online takes place after the story, shouldn't Mitchell still be behind bars? Five years does seem like a light sentence for her reckless driving.

Now, the Wiki states "apparently [Mitchell] has been released from custody" suggesting that she did indeed serve a sentence. (Ah, those corrupt LSPD) When you first encounter her, she has her lovely pink Cog Cabrio intact too.

But consider this: Even though the paparazzo missions are required for 100%, they aren't required to finish the story. Is it possible that the paparazzo missions are non-canon entirely?

What do you think happened to Mitchell? Slap on the wrist sentence? Prison break? Retcon? Didn't do the car chases canonically? Discuss.

A lot of people do actually.

Rockstar used to be known for their great stories and timelines. Rockstar themselves have said that GTA Online was initially set a few months before Story Mode. Cue the Gunrunning Update, and the timeline suddenly skips ahead to 2017, leaving many anachronisms in its wake. Rockstar f*cked up a timeline and people are bitter that they would do that to this day.

Didn't R* also say something about a story mode dlc? Think it's safe to just disregard what R* said five years ago and accept that the timeline in online on story doesn't have much to do with eachother anymore ;)

Seen people do way, way worse in real life and get off with much lighter sentences.

If wreckless driving and running from the cops got you 5 years, I'd be doing life behind bars by now.

A celeb in LA getting a lighter sentence than most makes sense to me. Money talks.

I mean, it's a rip off of the same state that let OJ's lawyers turn a murder case into a fiasco, he didn't even get charged for leading the cops on a wild goose chase even. 🤣🤣

She appealed her sentence and had it reduced to 90 days of rehab and 50 hours of community service.

Exactly.

I'd surprised if a rich person like her were actually in jail for years. A money penalty, her license taken out for some time, some community work (if so), and she's fine.

Yes they did. If anything, that's probably a bigger kick in the nuts than the Gunrunning time skip to Story Mode people.

Yes, it may be easy to say disregard Rockstar, but people just aren't used to Rockstar saying such blatant lies like these.

Gotta admit, I care. To me, topics like this are so unique and fresh to the forum, that many casual passersby won't get it.

However, those of us regular die-hard fans who enjoy reading and engaging about rare or unusual aspects of the game perk up and take interest that someone actually took the time to think about such a topic.

So, thank you GiantsGiants for reviving "America's favorite daughter" and bringing her to the forefront of the discussion.

Back on topic, there are many directions where this could go. We don't really know enough about Poppy's life, connections, or family to make a solid argument, one way or another.

But, in the interest of any discussion, speculation is always the choice way to go when information is at a minimum.

That said, it would seem to me that money speaks and Poppy's connections to the "industry" run deep and wide.
One could assume political associations likely got her that "slap on the wrist," or maybe it was just the money talk.

There is some proof that she has a connection to Redwood cigarettes AND to Jay Norris, CEO of LifeInvader, as she was reported to have spent significant time with him.
It was even a major topic of interest in the most recent StarsTalk Weekly magazine, seen here:

dqmqiMgEB0-cbrj46Y7JAA_0_0.jpg

I agree, her story and the missions that relate likely have nothing to do with the overall storyline, but were implemented as a sideline way of keeping the air of the game within that realm of LA shenanigans.

Much like Laslo, whose time really has passed, yet they keep reviving him to bring a sense of familiarity to the game. He was paramount in GTAIV, and his revival with Michael's daughter was nostalgic, but his most recent appearance with the Night Life DLC is cartoonish and gratuitous, at best.

Anyhow, an interesting topic and glad you put it out there. Hadn't thought about Poppy in a long while! Cheers! :)

Once story DLC got canned, i lost faith in much they say. Same with RDRO currently. They wanted feedback from us to improve the game, we got gold for sale first. Their priorities online are clear, and story/cannon isn't it, lol.

Don't get me wrong though, its nice to make our own from what's there of course. :)

How hard was it for you to disregard Rockstar though?

Personally, I was shocked and disappointed and it was hard for me to "break away" from them initially. And as I said above, I do feel like for some people it's difficult to believe that Rockstar would lie to them.

I'm sure there are people out there who are still hoping for a single player DLC, hence this guy asking about Story Mode in 2018 at London Comic Con (question is asked at 39:10).

Don't think it was ever meant as a blatant lie, they probably had no idea that the online part would be so popular and that they would release updates 4-5 years later. If they'd foreseen that they would probably put some more thoughts in to it?

Almost feels strange saying that instead of the usual criticism ;)

To be fair, not so much hard to disregard, just a little disappointed that I see them no different to other entertainment franchises more than anything.

Always felt R* cared about cannon and the stories more than most, and though RDR2 was good, online parts to their games are just less thought out long term and all about the Benjamin's. Bit of a shame for the die hard fan, but I get why they go for the cash over most all else, plenty of it out there in gaming today.

Just gotta take what we can get story-wise online now. I see it as wasted potential as I feel there's room for them to cash in and offer more for the long term fans.

Shadowfennekin

iirc she gave the cop a bj in order to get off.

Or it's implied anyways, that's always what I thought based off

"Wait, you're Poppy Mitchell... I'm a huge fan!"

"Please, I'll do anything!"

"Anything?"

Unless I've missed a canon shift somewhere, GTAO was originally a prequel to Story Mode. I know they've screwed that timeline up in various ways, but that was the last I heard.

Didn't we already agree that Online is set in a separate time period (modern day) ever since Gunrunning?

I can't believe this is still a topic of discussion smh.

People who solve world hunger like to play video games too. All work no play...

But I will say she doesn't have the same pink Cog Cabrio because I stole hers in the SP mission and resprayed it and FRANKLIN STILL HAS IT IN HIS GARAGE so she must have got a clone.

Online basically isn't canon.  It used to be that Online's events take place before the story mode saga because certain people you work for still have intact buildings in Online and Trevor is living in his trailer.

They finally gave up pretending that all the crazy s--- we do in Online was shockingly "forgotten" in the story.

For fun (that may be NSFW) here's what happens when you are trying to take the photo of Poppy and hit the selfie button right before the game switches to camera-view.

Spoiler

I can't believe this picture is 5 years old!

I think this thread exists because the game is 5 years old and a lot of us trying to find in this game something that isn't there anymore or never actually was there. That simple. Some of us jumped the ship, some of us are trying to justify the grinding, some are in-game retired, some are chasing rare items and rewards. Go figure.

@Giantsgiants is not really bringing up some deep topic, but hey, it's been 5 years. Online is non-canon, like @ash-274 said.

Merry X-mas nice people of GTAforums, I'm really glad to be with you, honestly.
