Player Assassination Stranger Missions

These are a thing? What were they even thinking?

I'm up at Flaco Hernandez up in Ambarino, in the total middle of nowhere just so I don't have to deal with PvP while hunting for pelts. Figure I'll pick this mission up because, hey.. nobody is going up to one of the prettiest areas of the map just to mess with my mission, and I'll be done before they got there even if they tried.

Then the mission turns out to be a hit on another player.. down in Strawberry. I've got 5 minutes to make it down to this unsuspecting player who's probably going to think me a total ass for just dropping them out of nowhere, assuming I can actually make it to them in time (which I can't, as they're even moving further South).

It'd be one thing if these missions had like a 6 hour time limit and changed to another player if the target left the session, but 5 minutes to traverse half the map and kill a target moving in a random direction?

Yes I've been targeted by them and it sucks. Last night my posse member got targeted and they were on us immediately and kept killing us. It really sucked.

I've been a target and enjoyed it. Also I've been the one hunting and it was fun too. If I have to run, I kill everyone who is going after me. If I'm hunting, I kill my target only once and everyone who interrupts.

Its really easy to escape though. Even if the enemy is near you,if you qickly react and just start riding he will probably never catch you. But thats a hard to fix issue...

Like you i always enjoyed being the target, often happened in the worst moments but thats somehow even better. I got targeted 10secs after i started fishing for the first time ever for example. Plans sometimes quickly change :)

They actually get a notification saying they've been targeted, which gives them plenty of time to leg it. I've had several of these missions fail simply because the target has been constantly moving away. They're difficult, but they're quite fun if your target decides to hang around.

I've heard people say that they just quit the session if they're being targeted, which I find a bit silly tbh. If I catch up to the target I kill them once and when it's done, I move on. But a couple nights ago some dude kept running away and it pissed me off a bit that he kept wasting my time, so I'd probably have kept killing him had he not left before I could get to him, lol.

I don't mind being targeted, but of course that depends - if I'm carrying stuff or doing something important it's really annoying. In the future though, I'll consider just ignoring these missions or simply let the time run out, as they're never really worth the trouble.

The one time I got targeted, it kicked me out of the damn stable! I'm fine with it if I'm out in the world, but if im in a shop, I shouldn't be sucked out and forced to run/ fight whatever.

I just had one target me for the first time. I was notified, then 4 people not 10 seconds walk away started blowing away at me a moment later. Thank god I'd just finished selling the ~50 dollars in pelts I had on my horse.

I have a serious problem with this sort of crap being in the game, especially when things like losing entire loads of pelts (nearly an hour of work) are possible upon death. If not for that it wouldn't be such an issue - but it's there, and it is.

It's one thing for the game to allow other players to kill me, it's another thing entirely for it to put a target over my head and say GO SHOOT THIS PERSON FOR MONEY!

Honestly, I feel like towns and their immediate surroundings should at the very least be safe areas, instead of literally the most dangerous places in the entire game. I'm always so nervous taking a haul into town, because a single bullet from some idiot can cost me an hour or more of work.. and the idiot in question probably doesn't even realize it. Unfortunately there are no butchers outside of the highly populated towns, and the only other option is trying to stick just outside of town and going back to sell every couple kills. That might be a little more efficient because you're probably bringing back more carcasses (instead of just pelts), but it's less fun for me and far more grindy since you're stuck in the exact same places farming the exact same things instead of out wandering the wilderness.

Edit: Forgot to add that it also cancelled the treasure hunt I had just started. Not sure if that used up the map, but the marker/mission to find the treasure totally disappeared as soon as I got the "mission" to evade the death squad on the other side of the road.

I got one of these earlier today, from the same location. I almost didn't bother, but then noticed there was another player just south of Colter. So I decided to go for it, thinking surely it will target someone nearby.

Nope.

The target was halfway between Valentine and Rhodes. Really? 5 minutes? I got on my horse and sat there for a minute, shrugged, and went on about my business.

Dead easy to get away just hit options then progress then start a online story mission ( it wont fully load) keep repeating as it boots you out the other side of the map, Ive got away from all of these except the very first one and i was in my camp at time and thought with white flag i would be safe but your not he sniped me from a distance, now i know what to do i've escaped several of them now with a small payout of around $7 at the end

There's a million and one ways to get away, sure. That's part of the reason they're such stupid missions - all it takes is literally anything that fast travels you or changes you to a different lobby.

Of course, if I'm carrying an hour of work around on the back of my horse.. I can't do any of that without having it all vanish into the ether. Same thing happens if I die. My #1 request for the game as it currently stands is for horse cargo to be as persistent as it is in single player at the very least, and preferably through death as well - as any random jerk with a gun can end you in the blink of an eye in online, unlike single player.

I was part of a two member Posse close to Tumbleweed, with another two member posse coming after us from up north. And I was able to survive until time ran out. Picked up the All's Fair achievement for running around the southern end of New Austin until the timer expired.

As for being the hunter. Here:

Easy to get away? We were in the gun shop in Tumbleweed and by the time we came out and got on our horses they were on us. It was the sh*ts.

Yes I didn't check the map - I was busy explaining to my friend was what going on. If I'd have seen they were right there that would've been the thing to do.

clinical oppression

when I get notified I'm the target ....I switch sessions . I got money to make and can't be bothered with battling a peasant posse doing stranger missions for less than the price of a perfect pelican

I've been a target once, I hid in a building with only 1 way in. I killed one of them before I died to dynamite(But they didn't get the mission completion), so I spawned back in and killed the other guy and Poof, achievement for disrupting another players mission. Thanks guys! =D

I'd hate to have it happen every time I'm in game, but once in a while, sure, it's fun. Depending on where you are and what you are doing of course. Having a loaded horse with it happening would not be fair in the least.

After reading some of your posts, my position is now more "anti-Assassination missions"..

Also, the other day me and my friend were in St Denis, he went afk while in the shop and I was in the gunshop browsing the catalogue. We got targeted, and it bounced me straight out of the shop just like @AdmiralAssclown described - that time I just decided to quit the session since I was posse leader and I figured that quitting would at least save my afk friend. Nope, when I returned back to the session he'd been killed by them anyway (got to have been outside of the mission though, but anyway).

That, and the fact that you can get targeted while carrying pelts/cargo, is just crap really. And if you'd make it so that it'd only target those not in shops/at the butcher's/at a fast travel point and also not target those carrying pelts/cargo... and since they're really difficult to finish from the attacker's point of view (the target can just ride away into the sunset) - all that kind of begs the question if they should really be in the game at all.

Had this once when I played, knew dying would cost me my few hunting bits. (Wasn't a lot, but still). So I waited for them to close in thinking I was easy pickings, pressed options, and bailed from the game for a spell. Back to story for my hunting fix. Easy peasy. :)

You all forget about one thing. RDO isn't money earning simulator in a first place. It's wild west. Such things like bounties forcing you to run in most unexpected and unwanted moment is what makes this game fun and interesting. Bailing lobbies or whining about losing pelts is bad way to start with. If you really care about these pelts, you can run for 5 mins and save them or pick up a fight and try to be better shot and earn xp for killing your enemies. Hunting is a great way to earn money, but not the best way to earn xp.

I was playing with a friend in my persistent posse last night and we got a message that our posse was targeted. I opened the map and it looked like pink ants coming for honey, all converging on our position.

right d-pad-->quick join-->mission - Pulled my posse member and I into a story mission.

Not today, not ever, Rockstar.

Edit: I got this mission to kill a player once and I was like, "You know what? f*ck this." because it was a level 5 shopping in Blackwater. I got on my horse and took off in the opposite direction.

Na, it's just a waste of my time to even care about another needing to kill me. I'll just bail and go again rather than try at something I just don't/wont enjoy, simples. The little Xp is easy to get elsewhere so that's no incentive.

Either is a wasted effort of course as I'll lost pelts either way. (Though I don't keep them to sell as money is easy just blasting anything and filling my satchel). But it's my choice to deliberately waste their time, lol. I don't care what some random thinks of me, never will either. Judge away. If a player travels that far to try, I enjoy putting the brakes on that crap. Them getting bitchy and texting crap only encourages me more to continue to stiffle that crap. :)

Wait, what? So this whole economy thing and needing to buy guns and skills is just a sham? And we've all been duped?

Tell me more, Dan Houser-breath!

I think it would be a lot better with better payment. If i remember correctly you dont even get gold and like 10$ if you survive. And if you kill someone a bit of gold, but its just not worth it if you only care about money(which you shouldnt).

I just found that part hilarious really, lol.

It's an open world game with free choice, and that chap needs to tell people how they should or shouldn't play. It's either just daft, or clear bait.

Not that I do play that way myself, but if a player wants to make the game all about the cash/gold and fill their bank, feel free. Who's to say otherwise as R* allow us to make that call.

Game's blatantly on us to play how we want, to an extent (aside the PvE players somewhat through minimal content for it). For another to say that's wrong, they completely miss the point of the game itself. 🤣🤣

I agree.

I mean if we're looking for realism, lets look at some bounty rewards from the real old west:

And I'm expected to drag my ass across the territory for $10?

Also, there seems to be no direct correlation between getting targeted and your honor level. I've been squeaky clean for almost the entire time and still get targeted. It would seem to me that if you have some rampaging, low honor roaming the map, he/she should be the one targeted. Just seems like common sense.

I love being targeted. Its one of the few exciting things that can happen in free roam.

Leaving the session because it disturbes your grinding.. what are you grinding for anyway? You clearly don't wanna play the game, so what do you need your fancy horses and weapons for?

Its not about the destination, but the journey if you ask me.
