Breaking down fish broken?

I’m trying to break down one of the Muskies I caught in order to store more fish on my horse. The game won’t let me do it though. I hold down X until the The thing finishes and the fish doesn’t break down. Anyone else notice this? Is there a fix?

I've caught a couple of big fishes that you can't store in the sachel but never saw an option to "break down", only pickup / stow in your horse.

Usually the "break down" option is triangle to skin/pluck but never saw that in big fishes.

You have to go into horse cargo. Then it gives you option to break down the big fish.

More importantly, why can't we cook and eat fish??

What do you get for breaking down a Muskie?

If you're near a camp fire, you can/should be able to break down large fish into cooked pieces while still retaining the big fish carcass in your inventory to sell later.

Because in online we can't setup quick camps to cook on the go. 🤦‍♂️

Oh that’s probably why it didn’t work. Thanks!

Was wondering how to do this just last night--thanks!

Actually very helpful to break down that pile of Muskies into something sellable that you can't otherwise carry in one load on your horse. :)

Shooting a fish (e.g. Rock Bass) lessens its resale value, but(!) lets you stow another 10 of the same "Poor" type (i.e. the game limits you to 10 Rock Bass and 10 "Poor" Rock Bass).

I never knew you could break them down so thats some good info right there!!  I always thought it was beyond dumb we couldnt catch more than one large fish at a time so this helps out as i usually have 5 Muskies laying on the ground behind me when im trying to catch more lucrative fish.

One of my friends said you can break down fish on the spot without using a campfire? Anyone know how to do that?

Breaking down fish also reduces the price, compared to normal full body fish. But at least you get to store more of it at much less price when sold.

Any idea how to do it on the spot after you catch a fish?

You just go to inventory in satchel, go over fish and it'll say you can break it down. Right on the spot. That was like a week or two ago from memory.

Also, I believe breaking down fish is also how you make fish food at campfires. Haven't tested it yet.

Do I need a certain equipment to do this? It won’t let me do it when I try.

I made a short, simple 25 second video showing how you break fish down. After you break them down the fish goes in your inventory just like any other meat you get from hunting. After you break them down you can cook the fish on a fire just like any other meat in your inventory

As for me, my option to break down fish isn't broken, and I can cook fish without any problems over any campfire after it's been broken down. People might be confused to this, because if I remember correctly in story mode, once caught any fish could immediately be cooked without having to break it down first.

Be careful not to overload a wagon. @Stoakzeeposted this on Twitter lol
