How does "paying off" your bounty clear you of the crime?

Recommended Posts

Smokewood

It doesn't make sense.

You commit a crime, you become wanted, you flee the area, a bounty is placed on you to bring you in for your crime.

So why does the crime go away if I pay my own bounty?

It's effectively implied in the fictional world of RDR you can pay the authorities money to avoid arrest, trial and/or sentence for any crimes. The greater the crime the more you have to pay.

Sound unrealistic or too implausible to happen in real life? Think again:

Why can't I just pay the cops off then, when they come running at me guns ablazin' ?

^ Just following orders, and presumably not allowed to take bribes. And the bounty hunters would rather collect on you than have you pay it off yourself. Going to the mail office has the order to arrest you removed.

It's not meant to be super realistic, it's just a game mechanic.

The ability to pay off your bounties is a necessary compromise in free roam. But I think in terms of the story it makes sense to leave the bounties unpaid or at least the ones you get from story missions. The whole crux of the story and the reason the gang can't go back to Blackwater etc is because they are wanted and are being driven further east. The only problem with this is that some chance encounters and side missions can be messed up by the arrival of bounty hunters, which Rockstar will hopefully fix.

Man, stop!

This will make me delete my saved game and start over with a mindset of never paying off a bounty.

^ It would be interesting to do a re-play of the story like that I think. But not recommended if you want to go for 100%.

isn't it a simplified version o the real life?

many times you can murder, rape, steal and all you need to do is pay a fine and you go free, you just way for the day you go to court, but you walk free nonetheless, but with some limitations

in red dead is a simplified way.

pay the fine, walk free

I have always done this since the first Redemption game. I LOVED getting a huge bounty, then I would free roam and wait for the law/bounty hunters to spawn and come after me. It leads to some classic shootouts where you either try and hide from them, or you try and ambush them, or you just make a stand somewhere, in a cabin, on a hill. It's spontaneous gameplay as you never know when they will spawn. (There's probably a pattern to it but I try not to memorize it)

The posse that comes after you also grows bigger the higher the bounty. In RDR 1 they would eventually have hunting dogs with them, IDK if they still do in RDR 2, I haven't had a huge bounty yet,  I've been trying to play honorable and stealthy.

Already pulled the trigger on a restart....I've already "beat" the game once so it's all fun and games from here.

I won't pay off a bounty unless I have to to complete a quest (for whatever reason).

I will put off any collections and challenges (within reason) until after chapter 6.

The worst example of this, for me, is the Valentine bank robbery.

You steal $20,000 - with your cut alone being worth $2,500 - and you get a bounty of, what, $300? Pay that off, and you're no longer wanted for this crime and have walked away with a net profit of over $2k for your criminal enterprise!

It's something I always want to point out to everyone complaining that the wanted system is unrealistically sensitive - yes, it might be. But there's other equally unrealistic elements like this that work in your favour. Overall (with the exception of train robberies) it seems pretty balanced.

My head cannon is that paying off your bounty is actually just a bribe to have your wanted posters taken down. They can't arrest you if they don't know you're wanted.

You have a $5,000 bounty on you from Blackwater.

The pinkertons can't find you yet Mary Linton just walks straight into your camp?

It works for a game, but how do think the bounty system should work in your view? Suggest an alternative system.

I'm clearly doing R* a favour trying to retro-fit explanations around plot holes but this sort of works:

The Pinkertons do actually have a very good idea of where the gang is - hence Milton and Ross crash the fishing trip, and then show up again in Chapter 3. But as this stage, they are trying to pick gang members off by persuading them to flip and go against Dutch. That's the cheap way to do it. By the end of chapter 5 they've got more funding from the likes of Cornwall and have assembled and army to do it the expensive way.

It doesn't explain why they don't deploy a small group of the Terminator grade Agents* who it seems are only allowed to patrol around Blackwater (pre Epilogue) - probably four of those would have wiped out the entire gang without much trouble.

*If you've tried to cross into the Great Plains early on you'll know what I mean about the extent to which the AI accuracy has been buffed. These guys make the adversaries from GTA O's Import/Export look like a bunch of pussies.

What I wouldn't give for an Armored Kuruma in RDR2. 😂

Not being allowed to pay off bounty. Either keep running or eventually go to jail which would require the gang to break you out.

At that point, you'd still have a bounty.

so keep running.....

On paper, that sounds good and realistic, but when players engage with actual gameplay, that'll become frustrating as they'll not be able to hunt and explore in peace, and maybe worse not be able to go into towns to complete missions and buy from stores. It's almost like suggesting that cops in GTA should remember you forever after you commit a crime in Los Santos, so they will keep chasing every time a cop identifies the protagonist. There has to be a balance between realism and fun.

I fully understand.

It's good to have options.

Here's a simple solution. Don't pay bounties and forget that the option exists in the game. Create your own adventure.

Doing a second playthrough and I've found it's more fun to let the bounties stand for a while. Had some unexpected encounters and fleecing those guys is an easy way to make dough. I was taking care of the couple at the Aberdeen pig farm and met a few bounty hunters as I exited with my stash. Had a fun little shoot out there. I do appreciate Rockstar for giving me a choice in the matter though. Pay off the bounty or just let it ride and have some fun.

I like how the system only sends bounty hunters after you and you can still walk around town for the most part without the law hassling you even though you have a bounty. Although one time I do remember some deputy recognizing me and I had to surrender. Spent the night in jail for some crap like animal cruelty. That's the only time I've ever successfully been able to turn myself in though. The whole system tends to be a little wonky.

Don’t give yourself a headache , it’s fictional entertainment it’s not supposed to make 100% sense

those are most likely bounty hunters

I dont see the point behind this thread as a whole tho tbh. Would you rather have it where you commit a crime and then just have to be killed to pay it off?

In GTA when you out run the cops.....would you rather have it where they will look for you no matter what until the end of time? Cause cops in a man hunt wouldnt just give up because you escaped a perimeter. if get my point lol

I left a few to get some really cool break out scenes if in jail. One type Dutch went to the guards and talked it out. Another town Josea blew through the jail wall. A lot of cool possible outcomes

that would ruin the experience of the game for 99.9 % of people.

again...GTA just keep running! dont be allowed to escape the cops forever

The pinkertons def know where you are. Its why they approached you and little jack marston. I am sure that close they are capable of walking 45 seconds in the other direction. He just clearly does not want more agents killed in a major fire fight. Thats why he was trying to offer arthur a deal, which was clearly the same deal he gave Micah etc. At the final time you see them at that point it had been so long and way more damage was done they had no more choices

That would kind of ruin things for the player. It would be stupid to get a bunch of money and then have a bounty around the same amount of cash that you have on person. Wanting to buy things,  upgrade things etc would be wasted if have a massive bounty over you leaving you unable to enjoy the money. Or maybe they did it where they put a bounty of equal amount on every person of the gang and it adds up to the higher figure.

And if think about it they town lost a crap ton of money. To put bounties on people means they will have to pay out more money. So Imagine if they put a 10k bounty on Arthur for a massive robbery....and bounty hunters go get arthur. That would be another 10k just gone. They dont have mass amounts of $$$$ laying around to give out as reward money

This is the exact reason I just pay them off lol. It just becomes more of a hassle when I am trying to do other things, becomes annoying

edit- sorry on the trip post, usually here it just combines everything in 1 post if your post is the next one after, so I assumed it would happen. sorry about that
