Max Payne Reboot

Recommended Posts

Bad Azz

I am fairly confident Rockstar is currently working on a brand new IP.

Let's face it, GTA V's success is a two edged sword, Red Dead Redemption 2 approximately sold for about 20% of GTA V's volume so far, and it required them the same amount of time to put the product out.

Rockstar is a business, and reducing profits by 80% over a five year period is never part of a business plan.

If GTA V had a 5 year lifespan and made X amount of profit, then the next five year cycle will also be marked by a similar goal.

I guess what I am trying to say is that in no way is Rockstar waiting another 5 years to release a product. What I see is the release of a new game within 2 or 3 years max that will serve as a bridge for the next GTA which will see the light of day in 2023 or 2024.

Rockstar won't keep alternating in between RDR and GTA. Personally, I would believe that the RDR franchise is now officially dead. It's not really a popular IP amongst the general public and 3rd release in a near future would only result in lower sales.

Bully is out of the equation as well. Bully is an oldschool game, not marketable in today's gaming reality.

So I am thus led to believe that Rockstar is in need of a fresh IP to put out. However, I don't think they will ever revisit the past with their games, nor the future. So we're left with a ''modern'' setting.

Anybody think a Max Payne reboot could be a viable option?

Most gamers have never heard of the franchise at all, and the first 2 games where on the orignal Xbox/PS2.

Thinking of it, a Max Paybe reboot would be badass. John Wick style!

What are your ideas?

Do you mean a Max Payne 4 or a reboot for the first Max Payne? If so, then I don't see that happening not only to mention that Rockstar didn't even make the first Max Payne game.

I'd rather see a sequel or reboot of another existing franchise like Bully or Manhunt, even though a lot of people don't think that we'll ever see another Manhunt again. I spoke to a few people who have said they think there will be a Bully 2, though one person did mention to me that they don't think it would sell well at all since it's more of a niche thing and that the Rockstar logo on the box is basically all that would move most copies.

Another Max Payne title is very unlikely. As mentioned above, Max Payne 1 was not by Rockstar (and Max Payne 2 wasn't even entirely Rockstar's game, either, it still was mostly done by Remedy if I'm not mistaken), plus I think Max's story is over at this point. Even a reboot wouldn't be welcome, since I think his original story was good enough.

I think the only way we could ever see anything Max Payne-related again is if they decided to remaster the first two games (which is also highly unlikely, seeing as Rockstar does not seem to be interested in bringing PS2 games up to PS4 standards even though they clearly have the money and resources to do so), or if they decided to make a game about another character in the series. Maybe a game about Mona Sax with her as the main protagonist and set between 1 and 2. But I doubt that would happen, either. So basically, if we get anything between RDR2 and GTA VI (provided they don't just decide to make us wait another 5 years with nothing in-between), I'd say Bully 2 is gonna be the most likely thing we'll see.

@Penguin Bob and @Hmmm nice bike,

Thanks for the correction regarding the first Max Payne games. I didn't even know that, always thought they were full Rockstar productions.

I was thinking about a complete reboot of the franchise, from scratch. Just keep the Max Payne name and turn it into a video game version of a John Wick movie. Lol.

But I think your answers kind of defeat the idea. So I'll stop it here. But I'd love it, personally.

However, I stand firm on my position that we will get a new game before the next GTA, and my argument will always remain based on the simple analysis of the shelf life and profitability of RDR2 versus its predecessor.

It's not a question of whether or not a new game is coming, but rather when will it come out? And what will it be?

I'd personally vote for a brand new IP over a new iteration of an older franchise, though one counter argument could be that developing a fresh and solid IP requires a lot of time and that unless Rockstar has been working on the new game while also finishing RDR2, which seems highly unlikely, the release window would be too small.

So maybe that pushes the new IP back to after GTA VI, and that indeed, Bully 2 would be a small market game that would act as ''filler'', and a little boost to Rockstar's heavily decreasing profits.

I could go either way with Rockstar when it comes to either releasing a new non-GTA game between now and GTA VI or just going silent for another few years. But I do agree that RDR2 (while it's an amazing game) is probably not going to have the same longevity that GTA V enjoyed. In particular, I especially don't think the online mode will be able to be stretched out for as long as they've been able to milk GTA Online for. But they could always end up just going back to making GTAO updates, too, rather than releasing another game.

A new IP out of Rockstar would be nice for once, and I think we all thought for a while that Agent was going to be it. Unfortunately, that's basically officially dead, and I don't even know if they even had much work on the game done when it was announced. Seems like a lot of the leaked stuff we saw for Agent was half-finished anyway.

It would have been nice seeing another stealth game made by Rockstar. I was expecting it to be like Manhunt.

100% Max Payne needs a reboot. MP3 was, meh.

Rockstar aren't doing anything with it. Should sell it back to Remedy in my opinion.

This would be a great idea. Are Remedy even doing anything now? Quantum Break was meh from what I heard, an Alan Wake sequel is probably not gonna happen, and Control looks alright but kind of repetitive and it has that "this title will be forgotten about in 2 months" look to it. I don't think the original creators were crazy about Max Payne 3's story, since they never really said they thought it was great and I'm pretty sure Sam Lake said he would have done things differently. They're probably regretting selling the franchise to Rockstar.

MP3 was one of the best shooters in its own right. I'd love one.

The ending was perfect so a sequel wouldn't be ideal, reboot would be better

Max Payne 3 is a sequel I didn't know I needed, definitely my favourite TPS ever, playing online now by the way

However yes, Max's story is over, but I'd love to see a spin-off of some sort, all the things Rockstar could make with that game concept would be wasted, if you know what I mean - it's a pretty unique game, and only other Rockstar titles share some similarities with it

I would be down for a reboot or a spin off, though I think that since Max Payne is technically Remedy's masterpiece, Rockstar might be best served to make a new IP.

I enjoyed Max Payne 3, so I think that a RAGE game with more developed shooting mechanics could be great, and fortunately for Rockstar, wouldn't require the same amount of resources and investment as a typical Rockstar sandbox, while still being immensely detailed.

I don't think Rockstar will do that though, I think they're going to milk their online open worlds ad infinitum.

I thought Rockstar did a fantastic job with Max Payne 3. So much better than the usual results of selling a franchise to a bigger company. I really hope they don't reboot the franchise, it just doesn't need one. If they let sleeping dogs lie and Max Payne 3 is the end of it, I can sleep well with that. Maybe they should buy the rights to Half-Life and finish that off too...

I believe Max Payne 3 did not made enough profit for Take-Two, only around 400 000 copies were sold in the first month, so I really doubt if they ever going to allow anyone do anything with this franchise ever again. Don't get me wrong, Max Payne is one of my favorite games ever, I wish they did complete remake of the first and second one with a modern engine, but I think it's never going to happen.

Max Payne is simply not profitable enough to warrant another sequel or reboot.
