Page Banner Resource Heavy

Recommended Posts

CaliMeatWagon

I quite often go to the GTA forums while I'm streaming to show where I get some of my information from. I recently discovered that the banner on the top is extremely resource heavy. Now I don't have the best CPU (i5 4500), but it shouldn't take 30+% of CPU processing to handle a banner. Reducing the load is as simple as scrolling down the page and making the banner no longer visible.

1. Chrome is a CPU hog and the amount of tabs you have open (relative to their size) suggests that it's probably more than a banner causing a large CPU load.

2. Out of curiosity I tested this myself, I'm on firefox (better btw) so the results might be skewed because Mozilla can create a good browser, but here are my results:

Results are negligible at worst. I'm no computer expert but I don't think that websites work like that (being on one part of the page, then scrolling down to lessen CPU usage). Maybe everything on the page was still loading? Either way this seems more like a you problem then a forum problem.

The animation uses at most 15% CPU here on my laptop running Linux Mint 19.1. SVG animations are pretty demanding on processors, and it also depends on how each browser handles it. No one is going to use static GIFs anymore for animations in 2018.

Firefox does indeed show a lower CPU usage. Our weather service's website also uses a ton of SVG animations to show the weather and it's quite the CPU hog on weaker machines. What's your CPU?

They do, in fact, it's up to the browser - everything that is not visible/rendered is hidden to optimise performance.

As for the number of tabs, the only thing that changes is me scrolling up, or down on the page.
