Quick tips

Maybe we can collect small tips and tricks in this thread?

1. Buy ammo in the catalogue and you can pick it up at any post office and at camp. If you got 90/100 bullets in your inventory you pay full price at stores but only get 10 bullets,at the post you take only what you need.

2. Theres a bug with split point ammo atm(unlocks at lvl 28 i think). You can craft this ammo without losing a normal bullet,so you basically get unlimited ammo. Crafting is buggy atm though and after 20 bullets or so it often does stop working. Still worth it,easy to complete the crafting challenge as well this way, plus bonus xp for every kill.

3.. A cleanly killed Poor animal will provide the same amount of meat as a Perfect of the same species, though pelt and carcass values are still lower of course. A sloppy kill results in less meat along with the quality drop even if the animal was Poor to begin with.

4.When aiming down the sights and firing let off the left trigger after each shot to automatically chamber the next round, rather than double tapping the right trigger which could lead to an accidental discharge throwing your aim off.

I've just bought a couple hundred rounds for every weapon type I use so that I can just top myself up from the stockpile whenever I pass through camp or a post office.

I dunno if this is common knowledge but it was a new discovery for me: up until now I thought the amount of meat an animal provided was tied to it's quality but it appears the way you kill it is what matters. A cleanly killed Poor animal will provide the same amount of meat as a Perfect of the same species, though pelt and carcass values are still lower of course. A sloppy kill results in less meat along with the quality drop even if the animal was Poor to begin with.

Just to add to the thing about buying ammo and collecting it from the camp or post office...

You can buy up to 999 rounds for each weapon type. When you go to pick them up press and hold square and it will fill up whatever ammo you need to the max you can carry. You can also see how many more rounds you have left to pick up later.

Its way better than buying 1 box from the shop and the catalogue showing as sold out.

You’ll pay a small fee for picking up from the post office but won’t if you get it from your camp.

Also applies to things like lures and crickets.

Apparently there's an option (not sure how to invoke/access it?) at gunsmiths to have every gun you own cleaned at once--for the same $1.50 price it costs to clean each weapon normally.

So just a time-saver; but could be very handy when also buying ammo at the same time.

Oh cool. Never noticed that option, but great if it’s there. I usually get my guns cleaned when at the gunsmith.

You can use eagle eye on buildings. They, or their windows, will glow orange if there’s any goodies inside.

Also when inside a building, use eagle eye again and any items you can take will glow orange along with any cabinets that you should search. Saves you walking round the whole place and searching everything.

More of a tip "warning", but be very careful to not get the law after your rump, and start a Gang Hideout within minutes of each other.

I thought "Hey, at least the gang members will take down the lawmen."

But R* logic means that the lawmen actually join forces with the gang members to shoot you. ...one for Dat Saintsfan's next RDO R* logic vid.

It's not like GTA Online, where the LSPD and gangs would duke it out with each other; in this brilliant game, they act like they're long-lost brothers, and you just slapped their mamma.

Apparently too much work for Rockstar to have implemented those little "bad guys" and "good guys" ID variable details in their scripting.

Ah well. At least (after I died a few times and returned for revenge) it was fun blowing apart a gang member still behind a Maxim gun who didn't seem to know where I was while hurling insults at me.

I'll bury what's left of him in a soup can.

This actually works in SP.  I accidentally steered a group of bounty hunters in to a gang hideout and they all started shooting it out. I just sat there popcorn in hand till they were done, killed the remaining bounty hunters then starting looting.

Okay, my tip:

Go to settings and put "tap assist" to hold, so u dont need button smashing anymore to get out of choke, lasso etc.

Now u can just hold down the button and it does the tapping/mashing for you.

(prolly almost everyone knows this already...)  :)

Dead eye full on steadies your aim so in some scenarios it's better to aim, activate dead eye and instantly fire instead of using the marking system.

Cook meat you get from killing animals and you basically have free core refills (cooked meat restores dead eye, stamina and health)

Wild carrot/Carrot is probably the best stuff to feed your horse.

You can feed your horse while galloping unlike single player where you can't do this.

^^ I would add hay to that--it boosts horse health and cores substantially, and there's only one place you can get it: Stables.

At 25 cents per "cube", it's also a very good investment.

Yea hay is the best value for money for your horse. You should always keep an eye out for wild carrots though, and use them over hay when you have them.

Oh,that sucks. Doesnt make any sense, havent even thought of it...

I stop editing the startpost, maybe at some later point if more people confirmed stuff etc.

Im not sure about 3. for example,i always headshot aligators and i get sometimes more meat sometimes less.

1. Best horse food: hay, $0.25. Bought in the stable under provision. It stacks 20.

2. When fishing, use eagle eye to see what's under the surface. Only works when you're holding the rod. You can also use it to see if a fish is chasing your lure.

Forgot the best one

3. Go to progress-> awards. Here you can reset some challenges and get 0.05 gold. When reset, you can complete them again and earn the xp all over.

(Yes thats why you see lvl 80 players in your session)

The only reason I haven't done this is that I'm not sure whether or not mashing can make things happen a little faster, has anyone tested this?

Unlike sp, you can whistle for your horse while skinning animals. You might not hear the whistle but it works. Saves a few seconds lol.

The button mashing conversation reminded me.. there is an option to sprint by just tapping the button once and not holding or hitting it constantly like in GTA. Only works for 3rd person view though.

If using cinematic camera to travel (especially during stranger missions, the delivery ones in particular) you can press pause and watch the map for enemies as you go. Don't forget to check/top up your horses stamina though.

I've been using this a fair amount to auto-travel while I go make a snack or smoke or whatnot, like I use taxis in GTAO. Griefers and predator attacks happen sometimes but I usually get there okay if I check the route before starting.

Wagons have a sort of auto-ride function that allows you look around and shoot freely, if you're following a road or highlighted route. Let off of the left analog and tap the run button to speed up, or right bumper to slow down.

Horses also have something like this when shooting behind you. It's a bit finicky unless you claw grip though.

Yes.

Hay is the best for horses. Carrots are twice the price, but you as a human can eat them. So hay is THE thing to feed your horse.

Pause > settings > controls > accessibility (at the bottom), then set Running mode (on foot only) to 'Toggle to run'.

ETA: You still have to tap to get the fastest sprint but there isn't much difference.

but is the success rate the same in PVP? Or does it offer an advantage against someone who presses the button slow? I can smash that button pretty damn fast.

Yeah but the computer has a fixed speed, and if it isn't lightning fast then you'll get outsmashed.

And if everyone is using the auto tap, then will it be a matter of who pressed it first? I actually like the fact that I out-tap 85% of the people I come across in a smash battle.

Wait I thought this was only for running?

I always keep stocked up on wild carrots. They're free and fill the cores to the same level as hay does.
