Journey_95
I used to watch DBZ as a kid. Tried some anime later on (some good one's would be Cowboy Bebop, Monster and Fate/Zero) but most of them are kind of cheesy and overdramatic with the same old teenager focus, cheap fanservice etc. The fanbase is really weird too with their obsession with Japan and sexualizing female characters. It's why I don't like JRPG's either, basically playable anime. Overall not a fan, what do you think about it? GTAgamerWyald
Monster is definitely one of the best pieces of fictions I've ever watched, Johan is one of the greatest villian of all time. The greatest anime have very well written interesting stories with some of the most compelling characters out there. Lain, Texhnolyze, Evangelion, Berserk, Kaiba, Samurai X Trust and Betrayal. Fullmetal Alchemist 2003, Perfect Blue, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Ghost in the Shell, Ash*ta no Joe come to mind. Other good ones are Hunter x Hunter 1999, Rose of Versailles, FMA BH, Baccano, Area 88, Dennou Coil, Paranoia Agent, Gungrave, Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta, Mushishi, Death Note and Shinsekai Yori. You can check those out if you like and if you do, since you seem to like depressing stories I recommend you check out either Texhnolyze or Berserk. There are a lot of Mangas that offer great stories too, but it depends if you're in the mood for reading. Patience is required. However the worst (most of it) is probably the worst the visual medium has to offer with the overabundance of terrible SOL comedy, Lolis, terribly written pretentious stories, and of course what you mentioned. Really, any cartoon/anime fanbase is terrible. So its easy to see why other people have disdain for the medium, but like anything there is good and bad. Tacymist
I watched a lot of DBZ and Speed Racer as a kid. Anime ain't really my thing overall though, but I'd still watch some Speed Racer if it was on. Something to fall asleep to.
Death
I used to watch the classic Yu-Gi-Oh!, DBZ, Evangelion, Digimon, Heidi, and Pokemon. Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game was a big hit in my life with the series, but I stopped playing around 2006/2007.
Zello
I started with DBZ, Pokemon, and Yu gi oh as a kid then got over it pretty quickly as I got older. There are some good animes and there are some terrible cringey ones. I hardly watch much anime these days but My favorites are Cowboy Bebop, Samurai champloo and Durarara. I do have to say the work that they put into the animation is pretty impressive. Edited December 13, 2018 by KY Jello
TheGodDamnMaster
I'm picky when it comes to anime. My all-time favorite would have to be Yu Yu Hakusho. It's like Dragon Ball but has more compelling heroes and villains. el carlitos
Everyone likes DB, specially DBZ. Recently watched "One punch man" on Netflix. It´s about a hobby hero with super strength that is able to defeat his opponents with just one punch, so he get bored and careless. Animations are great and Funny as hell. Easy to watch, just 12 episodes and like 25 minutes each.
Guest
I can confirm my pure hatred of DBZ/ japanese anime and everything associated with it. I liked Akira when it was released.
The Time Ranger
I've tried to watch Akira, the concept is cool but I kept wishing it was live action instead. Got half way through Cowboy Bebop, it was ok, but i'm not really interested enough to start watching again. I understand this might be sacrilage to anime fans but anime just isn't for me from what i've seen. Mister Pink

But for that same i dont think it would transfer well to live action, pretty jarring imo. The manga though is a fantastic read, it explores the psychological themes very well including great world building and character development that tie to the themes. Maybe you should give something like Berserk 1997 or Ghost in the Shell movie and series a try. Laura91
The only anime I've watched is "Tenchi Universe". I got into it due to the involvement of Sherry Lynn as the English voice actress. I found it to be pretty enjoyable. But, that's pretty much the beginning and end of the whole anime thing for me.
Goldn-Bayse
I used to dislike anime that much but I've been watching it quite a lot recently. A lot of the ones I like have been mentioned already (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, FMA B). I'm also near the end of Yu Yu Hakusho and I've been enjoying that one as well. As @KY Jello some of the work they put into the actual animation is really impressive and I like how it turns out in some shows (especially the action ones)
Richard Power Colt
I don't watch a ton, but there's a few shows I like. Recently I've been super into Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, part 5(or "season" 5) of the anime is currently airing. It starts off as kind of a campy and somewhat generic action series for teens, but it just gets weirder and more creative as it goes on. The fights are really interesting as every character has a completely different super power that they use in clever and strategic ways. It's also got a really unique visual style that's really different from most anime/manga. The manga artist got some of his art featured at the Louvre and he's apparently the only manga artist to achieve that. Another thing I like is how each part is kind of its own story with mostly different characters, even though they do mostly take place in the same continuity. It really helps the series stay fresh. I do recommend watching the series from the beginning as I think there is something to like in every part, but in my personal opinion part 4 is when the series actually starts to get really good. The manga actually goes up to part 8 so the anime is a fair bit behind. Edited December 19, 2018 by Richard Power Colt
TheSantader25
As a "default" opinion I think I don't like it but I find it kinda funny in a weird way. They take themselves too seriously sometimes which becomes funny. But boy if you get hooked into a show you're f*cked. You gotta watch till the end. The closest thing to anime which basically isn't an anime that turned out to be the best animated series I watched was Avatar:The Last Airbender Edited December 19, 2018 by TheSantader25 iiCriminnaaL

Shaundi.
DBZ, Yu gi Oh and Sailor Moon were the sh*t when I was a kid, especially on Cattoon Network. I'm yet to watch Akira, enjoyed Ghost in the Shell (1995) and I've just started watching Ghost in the Shell SAC. I wouldn't touch modern anime with a 50ft pole. Willy A. Jeep
As with any media, anime's bound to have its bad and its good. The framing - taking something as a whole - is, always, the issue when it comes to this kind of argument. Gosh, there have been some pretty awful video games over the years, but I still like video games. There's a lot of potential for good, and a lot of examples of that. Same goes for anime. On the case of specific shows, I'm not a die-hard see-everything follower of the cult. I think my favorite is the 2003 adaptation of Kino no Tabi, and I've got Cowboy Bebop on DVD somewhere around here, so I must've liked that. Watched plenty of Dragonball and never could get into it too much, but Ghost in the Shell's many spin-off series were good enough, and I recall rewatching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood a few times. I find I have no interest in the mecha stuff, with Evangelion's films the only memorable pieces of the genre for me. On the lighter side, I do like things like Yuyushiki and The Pet Girl of Sakura Hall, though I find a lot of those romcoms wind up being too samey and flimsy in their plotting. The Last Airbender, though an occidental production, definitely deserves a watch for anybody who's not into anime but is interested. It's a good mixture of Western and Eastern in both humor and style, not to mention having a stellar soundtrack. I've sat through far more forgettable things than memorable ones. Of course, then there's the case of more old-fashioned anime, and more commonly viewed films like that of the Studio Ghibli library. Still, a hugely mixed bag, but Studio Ghibli is renowned for reason. Definitely more targeted at "family" audiences, so they can go either way, but plenty of variety is available. I loved Kiki's Delivery Service as a kid, and it's still very watchable as an adult, and I understand the more abstract natures of Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle better now. Nico
Never quite liked it, to be honest. I had my own share of DBZ, Pokemon, etc. when I was a kid, mainly because my brother used to watch them on Cartoon Network, and it was a constant matter of discussion within our classmates. Yu-Gi-Oh cards were also huge when we were at school. However, I've always felt more attached to western animations, even today at 24, and I'm not ashamed of it at all, despite being quite hard to find people IRL who openly like them, then and now. I can respect anime fans as long as they don't go full elitist when discussing other types of animation, though. I know the majority of them aren't like that, in DeviantArt I know plenty of people who are quite open minded and have varied tastes. But at times I've came across certain people who seemed to take the word "cartoon" like an extremely pejorative term, like a "lesser" form or art. And it kinda "grinds my gears", like some famous cartoon character said. Did you see the frightened ones? Did you hear the falling bombs? Did you ever wonder... ...why we had to run for shelter when the promise of a brave new world unfurled beneath a clear blue sky?

Arnold Stallone
Last anime show that I have watched was Gundam Seed...I remember enjoying it in the mid 2000s Maybe I should rewatch it and see if it still holds up. Judging by the amount of people on internet forums and Steam that have anime avatars the medium must be as popular as ever I just have not watched any of it in over a decade. Zello
Live action versions always end up terrible. https://m.ign.com/articles/2019/04/04/netflixs-live-action-cowboy-bebop-series-casts-its-spike-jet-more This seems like a trainwreck waiting to happen but I'll wait until it releases. Clem Fandango
I think the cringe factor with anime is mostly culture shock. I'm basically immune to it now but conversely I find a lot of Western genre fiction to be unwatchable. Those Marvel movies are a good example: I have no idea how anyone can look at Iron Man fighting Thanos and have any kind of emotional reaction at all with how stupid and cheesy it looks and sounds. I guess that's what it's like for you lot watching anime?
Guest Billy Russo
It's never appealed to me but that's because I don't really dig the art style.
