Jerking For Soup

Looked down upon as the black sheep of music genres, emo has had quite a strange lifetime. From it's origins as a developing form of hardcore rock in the 80s, to it's turn to the mainstream throughout the 90s and 2000s, and now with emo rock taking a slight step out of the mainstream, it is worthy of recognition for ways in which it has influenced the direction of music and is currently going through a revival.

It's really not restricted to certain bands or sounds. Emo is just expressing deeply personal messages with often confessional lyrics. It's traditionally rock music. The stigma it has recieved with bands like Evanescance and My Chemical Romance aren't what defines emo as a genre. A lot of emo isn't based around common belief, etc. In short, it's not the cringefest it's often made out to be; it's often conflated and considered synonymous with the subculture it has spawned.
