Change My Mind

I dunno, my Bogey is still my brave boy. 😉

I've seen a big horse taken down by a Morgan. My daughter had a thick Ardennes horse that touched noses with a Morgan on the road and literally flew up into the air and threw her. 😂 I wished we still had the video and I don't know if it's just her bad luck with horses (she has horrible luck) or what, but it was hilarious seeing that tank flying through the air as that little palomino Morgan just continued down the road.

It's rider was not happy though.

I keep three stables.

My red Arabian mare is named Pomme Rue. I know some French words, you know, growing up down Lemoyne. Her name means Road Apple, which she is a great source of. I mostly only use her for racing since she is skittish. If you're on a skinny bridge with Pummy, as I call her, best not slow down. She'll skit you both away from one gator into another's maw. And do try not to shoot so much. She's fast but fickle, the best choice for racing and leisure. Horse whisperer? TOO LOUD. Pummy goes from polished steel to puddin' foot at a leaf's rustle.

Favorite Food: PURE ORGANIC HORSE MEAL

---

More often and especially for hunting, I like to perch up high on my Shire - his name is Mr. AND Mrs. Ed. He's big boy. This horse's measured clip-clop is always a pleasure across any surface that is not uphill. And when I ride in shooting, best circle some tall damn wagons, or I'm just gonna shoot over em.

Favorite Food: EARS OF CORN

---

In the end, more often than anything else, when it comes time to tack up I whistle for my original Kentucky Saddler, name of Briskit. He's my tried and true all-round best horse ever. When I only kept one horse, it was Briskit. And if I could only keep one, it would be Briskit. When I get away alive, you bet it was probably on top of Briskit!

Favorite Food: BIG RED APPLES

---

Although.. my two favorite equine memories ever to this day were 1.) Riding teensy jackasses we stole from the farm into town, and 2.) A hack or bug had made Briskit and Huckleberry (my friend's and my horses) giant (They were about the size of a stagecoach on legs perhaps or perhaps an adolescent brontosaurus)*. That was the time in my life I most wanted to ride sidesaddle.

Finally got around to taking a half-decent pic of my current daily 'driver':

iPaege2.png

He's a solid all-rounder: handling's good, doesn't spook that easily (but does run like the clappers if I need to get away from wolves or whatnot), not erratic in a shootout, etc. I wanted another period-authentic name, and figured something like "Vindicator", like the kind of name you might see under an old painting of a prized bull - with the tan and black colours, I ended up going with "Challenger", which is a perfectly fitting name for a Mustang. :p

Every single horse I have had has been totally useless. They are max bonded, high stats, well fed and looked after and horrible near anything resembling danger. Every single one has thrown me at animals, gunfire and pretty much anything. I had a bounty charge at me and the horse ran.

Currntly on god knows how many horses and given up trying to find a brave one.

I keep hearing people say how their horse can stand in front of a grizzly and not throw them but I have seen nothing like that. Even with slow and steady on the thing is screaming and trying to throw me.

I put my red chestnut mare* out to pasture about a month ago, for just those kinds of shenanigans. Even with her, it may help a bit to pause and get it clean and calm before the harrowing experience. Often not possible except to keep an eye on it

*R.I.P. Pummy (they say (X) DISCARD is humane but it really means GLUE FACTORY!!).

Then I bought a real certified black stallion and named him Sue to give him some grit (like the Shel Silverstein poem / Johnny Cash song). You know, that's just a bunch of voodoo nonsense role playing sure; but that's exactly how it worked out.

My saddler is still the most surefooted of them all though, but he spends more and more time munchin oats down at the livery, I am almost always riding the shire or the thoroughbred anymore these days.

And I keep a fourth stable in waiting.. they were on sale.. figuring when I fall in love with a broken or stolen horse sometime I'll go buy that kind and pretend I kept it :). But no rush, for now, Cripps can sleep in my empty 4th stable.

Well you'll find one Jammsbro! I wonder how our luck could be so different though, or if it is just different expectations, perhaps I am making lemonade out of lemons. I guess the best of them all are still skittish and you may learn what sets the horse off and intuitively get better at surely riding it into things, maybe. They are all really untenable when they get very spooked but you calm them without getting off by clicking the left joystick can help, especially if you are counting on them to stay after you dismount, and good luck !!

Got myself a new horse (I know again, right?)

Anyways this is Sweet Roll, my perlino Turkoman filly.

YamY5E5.jpg

And don't worry, I made certain nobody is going to steal my Sweet Roll. (sorry for the bad Skyrim joke) 😁

Also, what did the update do to my Karl? I swear he has never been so derpy but last night it seemed like he was just out of his own skin

I'm convinced they dumbed down the horses for these Blood Money missions.  It seems mine are more skittish and slower to react to my whistle.  Also seems like they're slow out of the gate. I need to double or triple tap my buttons to get them going.

I took out both my Fox Trotter and had my black Turk and at one time both of those horses were pretty grounded. Last night, the Turkoman seemed to want to run into and fall over everything. Never had that problem with any of my horses but he was so difficult I had to stable him.

The Trotter was not as accident prone, but he was scared of everything, and I used to be able to ride him into a gun fight without a problem.

Bought the new Turkoman and she seemed more skittish than any other but was sound otherwise.

All three of them were slow to come to my call and seemed to run for the hills when the guns went off.

I have to agree with you, they certainly changed these horses and not for the better. My brave babies are turning into cowards who can't stay on their feet.

Still? How about now? I wasn't so sure back then but pretty sure my horses are behaving. I successfully trampled two snakes for the daily goal yesterday (and a whole bunch of frogs but I guess neither counted as animals!). That was brave. And he stood firm while I emptied the repeating shotgun into a pack of wolves that were right up to us, good boy Sue. You know it's just a thought but maybe the update reset their training or something and they got learned again. Maybe.

I got 4 horses,

Black Arabian called “Sway”

Breton Steel grey called “Judge”

Missouri fox trotter blue roan Called “Rusty”

and a Dappled buckskin Norfolk roadster called “Tantrum”

Behaviour is the same on all horses, i just keep em under me by using the calm option a lot when needed, keep em well fed, clean and calm will do the trick and you wont get trown off is my experience...

Last week I bought a shirecos I was bored. Stored my kladdy and mft in stables and took shire out after fitting saddle etc…

after bonding I was surprised by how good it is around predators. Much better than my other faster horses who buck me off if they even smell a snake.

now my fave horse, yes slower but I don’t need to go everywhere at 100mph.

i have made the same experience and couldnt find a braver horse until i tried some of the cheaper lower tier horses.

for me i found the dutch warmblood and the hungarian halfbread clearly more brave than all the others i ve tried before.

but thats all random in the end.

The bravest horse…?!

i know this video but its not totally true.

there are clearly some differences in the braveness.

at first i agreed to his findings until i found the braver horses myself.

its not only with how often ou calm them down.

some horrses dont buck you off at all with certain deadly animals.

you can even see differences which horse is more sccared of which predators.

so there is definitely some random scareness factor in the files.

i think onlypvpcat just hasnt found a more brave horse yet so he couldnt really test the different behaviours.

The second bravest horse I have ever owned is my bay Turkoman, and even with this update, which has turned most of my stable into a more timid herd, he can still take on a legendary panther and it's cubs without bucking me once.

Boy am I glad that his personality didn't get rewired.

Sweet Roll, my dainty perlino Turkoman got a new mane and tail. I have so many Turkoman's in my stables that I have to have a different cut for each one, she currently has the longest mane and tail. She's actually a crazy mix of what a cremello and a perlino horse has in it's coat traits now though. 😉

Alright due to increased buying power & minimal increase in buying opportunities (paired with questionable judgment), I just invested in an extra extra stable and bought a pair of identical cheapos (flaxen chestnut Morgans with just black/cream of the same saddle mane and tail). I will use them similar and see if one seems braver over time

Frick & Frack,

XFqbsd4.jpg

Right out of the box, Frick seemed the more skittish of the two. But by the time of reaching bonding level 2, they seem similar and it's just too soon to say.

And I suppose a sample of 2 is not sure to tell much but it's a fun diversion and we shall see

Slow and Steady is the only real answer, since variation doesn't matter then.

I really do wish I'd been using it two years earlier (or however long, since the start of Online Beta),

instead of the worthless (for the way I play) Paint It Black.

You might say your horse is brave enough, even with legendarys, but with Slow and Steady

the Legendary Cougar/Bear can be UNDER the horse (or moving in a tight circle around it) and the horse

doesn't buck. I just hate how the Legendary bears do an INSANELY FAST tight circle around the horse, after

hitting Slow and Steady; I have to kind of move forward then, to be able to shoot it again.

I thought maybe it was just me, or something wrong with my new replacement Xbox Controller! My Gypsy Cob, which seemed OK,

Is now slow out of the gate and you really have to tap the button just to get it going since Blood Money; it also seems difficult to

keep it at max speed. I wonder if it was on purpose or is just some odd bug? I wonder sometimes if the horse stepped in some Molasses.

my latest addition to the roster is the cremello kladruber - not a particularly fast horse but easily on of the best looking in the game - will have fun training this one up, love the new sweeping mane option

I noticed that my black pinto Trotter is the same way, and he always seemed to be a faster start than my Turkoman horses. But, I also think my horses have become more accident prone since the last update as well.

To test this I took out two of my other Turkoman horses and my other Fox Trotter, and sure enough they seem to fidget to the side a bit more than normal and stumble over the smallest rocks. Now when I took out the first Turkoman that I ever bought, the bay one that I've had for years, he had no troubles whatsoever? He also seemed faster no matter his saddle than the other Turkoman horses.

The only other horse I have in my stable that I've owned since around the Frontier roles release is my silver tail standardbred as I am wondering if the newer purchased horses are the ones being changed. But I haven't yet taken my Boomshot out yet to test and see if they tweaked with her yet. It is strange that the other horses have changed but my oldest purchases are still pretty sound?

Good horses, I had the black one for some time. They just really did not seem to like snakes, I mean mine would scream and holler for a mile after we encountered one. 😄

wish we had a simple but high-end saddle that's all black or dark grey, to put on the black Turk.
For now I have the black Upland Saddle which is nice and black, if the bridle didn't have any silver ornaments it would be good.

I think I've finally settled on a secondary horse. Meet Snowshoe (the fifth, and hopefully last of her name, unless R* adds a fleabitten gray Hungarian).

0_0.jpg

She handles gunfire surprisingly well, though she's a bit fragile with only level 6 health. We were galloping through Hennigans Stead the other day and tumbled into one of those gullies near Stillwater Creek, and it wiped out half her health. My fault for not paying any mind to the terrain.

0_0.jpg

Apologies for the night pic, but I thought she looked awfully cute here. I know all the horses have the same walk cycle, but I can't help but think her walk is more graceful and elegant than Halfpenny's (my primary horse) plod.

Frick & Frack,

XFqbsd4.jpg

I raised my twin Morgan boys well. They are both level 4 and learned to piaffe. These horses surprised me.

I may have pulled middle of the road variables and have different luck with more tests. I dunno. But they really came out so similarly. Yesterday I switched them to the same black and white tousled hairstyle and routinely began to get them mixed upNo different behaviors that I can tell between the two.

And they are nimble, light on the feet, quick and light. They are so little they can even be hid in a lot of bushes. I think if I began the game again I would pick a Morgan over the saddler, sorry Briskit. And yet, Briskit is just a made steed, but Frick and Frack you gotta go, sorry Frick and Frack. Ur screwed goin to the glue factory soon poor fellers

I wish you could really raise em and sell em. It was satisfying raising them carefully. Anyway it raises questions like if these two turned out great from a consistent gradual rearing or just were inherently similar good dispositions. Look at these boys they both did great with bullets flying all around! Bounty hunting was a relief from all the gators around camp I guess!

gjDdHc7l.jpg

I believed I was riding Frack there in that photo, who was originally with the black mane; he was braving it right up with bullets embedded in both of us and flyin all around. And I was going to finally call it that he was braver. After the shootout, throwin the bounty on his back, no it was Frick! And so they were declared equally brave good tempered horses and discarded summarily to free up stables.

They were truly the bravest Morgan boys I ever knew! And in their memory I am naming my semi auto pistols Frick and Frack. Next I will try another small horse - a mustang I think. Aw yeah the rich rewarding rancher life *sizzles their ass with the LAZY F brand*
