Ha hah ..

Horses in RDO actually "whisper" a lot from that end .. 💨

But not as much as the dog .. Really don't know what Cripps is feeding this dog with - it has to "whisper" all over the camp, all the time .. 💩

Yeah, mashing the heck out of the button is what I do on my Gypsy Cob (which I like for the full stats, since otherwise horses seem kind of the same.)

Another thing I've started doing is not only turning towards the animal, but actually running into/through the pack of wolves on purpose; no idea why but

the horse seems less prone to throw than if they are on your tail.

Mine are the same way, I've used mine as battering rams against the wolves a few times. My husband thinks I'm crazy, but that is how I gauge what to expect from them by forcing them at the enemy head on and seeing what they can handle. My horse's are tough, and crazy like me. 😆😁

If you activate the "Slow and Steady" Dead Eye ability while in the saddle your horse cannot buck you or run away.

I did not know that, gotta start doing that for the times the cougars, err panthers, decide to spawn right in front of my horse while we are mid stride.

16 hours ago, StyxTx said:

The worst thing you can do with any of the horses is allow the predator to get behind them. In the game and in real life, a horse will panic if it can't see the predator. However, in real life, and unlike the game, horses won't stop in that case. They'll take off like bats out of hell, just like the wild horses do when we approach.

A horse feels the safest as long as it is moving, which is why that ridiculous abrupt stop just to toss you from the saddle makes absolutely no sense. Most likely you would be thrown because the horse is kicking it's rear legs if it isn't aware of how close the predator is to it's backside, but they would never stop.

My grandpa had a BLM adoptee that I watched break through a metal gate in a full sprint because it was being chased by a neighbor's pair of Great Danes. He kept running down the road and we had to chase him with a four wheeler and force him down to see what damage he took from it. Luckily he only bruised a knee and had a few lacerations on his chest and neck but there was no stopping that horse, it was like he didn't care if the gate was there at that point. That's the reason why it's dangerous to pen horses up in paddocks with barbed wire fencing, if they get spooked they will tear themselves up trying to push through it.

The first time I heard a horse fart in this game, I thought it was Arthur and my first thought was that Pearson must have made some good beans for breakfast. 😄

My hound likes to relieve herself when I am trying to take a cute picture of her. Typically when I am knelt down beside her to take a selfie, might be trying to tell me something? 😂

Brindle Thoroughbred is my favorite. They had to make the cores small otherwise it'd be OP. Size, speed, vaulting, traversing terrain, swimming, really brave other than cats. They accidentally let the Naco saddle make it OP though because without the naco+top stirrups, it's a terrible horse. Only advise using this saddle stirrup combo. I accidentally found out about this horse because I was curious about "race" handling and it was on sale. So glad I did, she's the only horse I use😀 By far the best purchase I've made in the game.

Prove me wrong.

I've never really ridden the shires in the game, but I've heard they are braver than other breeds. The other feathered breeds are a bit harder to maneuver like the Breton and the Cob so it makes me wonder if it is the same for the bigger guys?

My husband loves that silver brindle thoroughbred, it's probably the most sound horse in his stable.😊 I had the red bay/chestnut thoroughbred because just the color is gorgeous and that one was also pretty nice to ride.

This is me "training" my newest addition Rorschach (Rory) that the bears are nothing to worry about. 😁 It's how I gauge my horses through bonding. Honestly I think that there is a way to override the horse's fear scripts I just haven't figured out how I am doing it just yet.

Needless to say when I do things like this it tends to make my husband nervous and he calls me suicidal. 😆

Shire was the first horse I bought and I still ride him today so it may just be me but I don't really notice any difference. I have max stats, equipment and tricks with him so he's as nimble as any other.

If you don't mind me asking but which saddle do you use for him?

The only Shire that I had was in story mode and it was the big black fella that you can sell, although I didn't ride him much after keeping him and I only kept him because he was pretty. I've ridden the Ardennes in story mode for a bit because I got him for the pre sale special and he was cute but just too much horse if you know what I mean.  😆 I love stately animals but those horses have too much going on in the trunk area.

They really should bring back that black coat for the Shire for online players, and give us a few coats with high white markings. I'd love a deep seal bay with white legs that run up the back and across the barrel like the one second to the left.

zaknNB4.jpg

Someone was also mentioning in other threads about customizing the horses that pull our personal wagons. It would be nice to have more colors to choose from.

With the shire being one of the more popular feathered breeds in the game it makes you wonder why there is not so much focus on them.

I have that saddle on my Kladruber right now, sans the hooded stirrups. So that works out great.

The reason I am asking goofy questions is because I see a lot of players with the Shire, more than the other big horses, and I was curious as to why? I know why they have the Arabians, for the speed and all, but I didn't know the Shire was a decent mount.

That light grey one is very nice looking when I see them pulling those wagons.

So I just might buy her instead of spending a ton of money on yet another speed demon, as I have a herd of those already.

I have that one, her name is Reckless. I had to change her name after the real military war horse Sergeant Reckless because she isn't afraid of anything, not even the snakes.

That makes me think, even though some people say not, that there MUST be variations (regarding bravery.):

Mustang was another one I tried that seemed as cowardly/crappy as everything else (max cores, well fed, max bonding, etc.)

Every horse people have sworn by, ended up being no braver than the others for me.

So I ended up staying with Kladruber for the max stats, then later my current Gypsy Cob for the same reason. I just mash that

"Pat/Calm" button on my Xbox controller, as I have with all the horses once I found out about doing that ;)

I think because it is the largest? Also, they've probably figure out there isn't much difference in the other things (as it seems to me) so they

are just going for it because it is the most imposing; it is even bigger than the Bounty Hunter horse, isn't it? Ah, yes "The Breton is like a shrunk down Shire model"

(someone said on reddit.) People say Shire is noticeably slower, but then again I've not noticed a speed difference between my Norfolk Roadster (which people said

was so "fast") and my current Gypsy Cob; at least it isn't a difference affecting game play.

Dang, now that I've sent so many horses to the "glue factory" (only retaining my current Cob and Roadster) I'm tempted to try a shire to use some stable space!!!

My husband has had that brindle striped dun/bay mustang for a long time, and that little guy is so scared that even during a gun fight he high tails it to Tahiti even when my husband parks him well away from the fight. 😆 He keeps asking my how I can keep my horses so calm and I just don't know who to answer him.

It isn't like I don't throw them into danger because I will usually charge them into the fight if I can. I tend to shoot better in the saddle than on foot for some strange reason? I do baby them, feed them often and brush them nearly every time I jump into the saddle. And I hardly push them to sprint for too long of distances. Other than that I don't do much different than he does so I have no clue why my boy and girls are so well behaved.

As a horse lover 😊 I tend to pay a lot of attention to my horses and their personalities and I do have to say that they all do have slight differences in their behaviors from the start. It isn't connected to breed or gender it's just a part of their personality that when paired with their biology makes them act differently.

Like I had four Turkoman horses in my stable, and each one had a different personality. My bay one is hard to startle, my new shaded gray one is bullheaded, the chestnut is calm and she isn't as quick to move as the others, and my golden buckskin was shy of a lot of things. When I would groom them off the saddle the ones that were calmer would actually turn their heads to rest them on my character's shoulders for a moment, the gray one would close his eyes and give happy grunts, and the buckskin would turn her head and stomp her back legs in response.

So I kind of think they have a scripted behavior for each horse to make them a little unique even if you have multiple of the same breed. That, or I'm just too horse crazy? Which could be I guess? 😁😉

I've noticed a difference between breed when it comes to their take off speed, and how long they can go before they slow their pace a bit, but it's usually nothing worth worrying about. Unless of course you are crossing the map like it's the Kentucky Derby.

The shire is one breed that even in story mode I haven't saddled for long, so I really haven't had the time to pay attention to their behavior or their handling.

When it comes to the Roadster, it tends to have the trifecta of wanted traits for the horses. It's quick at the gate, brave, and it doesn't need to slow itself when moving at a continued pace like the other horses. That's why other players like to use them for racing, when I had mine she always placed.

Thinking of buying a Turkoman, but also considering Kladruber.

I currently ride a Steel Gray Breton.

My other horse is the Dappled Black Thoroughbred from Special Edition purchase.

Any thoughts?

I will happily vouch for both being good breeds. The Turkoman is fast and mine seem to be pretty brave, the bay one is my go to horse when I need to hunt for cougars, actually. Of all the breeds available they are probably my favorite next to the Trotter. Although I have heard from other players that they don't like them as much because they tend to be skittish for them. It's true that they are high strung but once you figure them out they are a good mount to have.

The Kladruber is also a decent horse but tends to be a little more on the skittish side, mine will raise hell if there was a snake in it's path and he'd still be screaming about it a mile down the road. Not as vocal as the Breton, but still very ornery. If you get one of them you might want to get a decent saddle/stirrup combination as they aren't right quick out the gate.

I still have my black one and I bought him first thing when the role came out. My daughter has both the rose gray and the steel gray with black points and she seems to like them a lot.

One thing to keep in mind with the Kladruber is that you want to be careful if you let them lead, those horses like to zig zag off path more than any other I have ever had.

No worries. I have the Shire because he's massive. Horse stats once you have decent equipment are pointless. I think it's a few seconds in total to cross the entire map between the worst horse and the Arabian.

I always know which horse is mine as he's massive, white and has a mohawk.

I have the black and ginger Breton as well as he reminds me of my dog with the same colouring.

I used that one FOREVER, until I had lots of money/gold; it really is a pretty OK horse, until you can

buy the special expensive ones. It is a great starter horse, with it always being free to get another before

you could afford horse insurance.

Mine was the biggest coward ever, though.

I bought the B&W Mustang (forgot the color name) a while back and it's been the quietest, calmest horse I've ever had and it's not even close. It also has maxed out health and stamina and top speed (with the hooded stirrups), equal to the Arabian . I had a Mustang long ago and the "stats" were nowhere near as good and it was pretty skittish. This must be a newer horse cuz I don't remember it from too far in the past.

As far as temperament, I think it's random. Breed of horse has nothing to do with it as far as I can tell. My Kladruber isn't all that skittish either but someone else said theirs is around snakes. Mine will snort a few times but that's about it.

I also keep them well fed, brush them often and I don't race all over the place.

If you run top speed for long periods of times the horse starts getting uppity just from that which makes it even more skittish. If they aren't kept fed or clean they also get very uppity.

Same. I used the Dappled Black Thoroughbred since launch up until about Thanksgiving. I named him Hades, and he’s the worst near predators and will buck me off in a second — damn scaredy cat! 😆

I bought the Steel Gray Breton for FREE with R* reward.

The Breton is much better around predators, stays put most of the time, is hardy — but doesn’t handle well for more nuanced maneuvers and isn’t fast enough for my Posse. Allot of them are running Arabians and Norfolk Roadsters.

I’m using Nacogdoches saddle with Covered Stirrups.

Leaning towards the Perlino Turkoman — reminds me of Buell.

If that was the special one for single play, yes very similar as far as I could tell.

Works the same as single play ultimate edition one too, since in single play I had the bug

where my horse just disappeared when I got back in game (was gone on the save too)  and

got another for free from the stable; of course, Arthur had to raise it to 4 again.

My little chestnut Tovero Mustang is a scrapper and I think that of all of my horses she is the fastest start, I like to call her my little feral rocket because she just takes off.

It's kind of coincidental of how brave she is because her paint markings are known as "Medicine Hat" markings, and Native tribes believed that horses born with those markings would protect their warriors in battle. 😁

I feel sorry for the people that grinded money or Gold to buy the Arabian because they rushed to see what was "better" stats wise when they could have bought any Horses and had the same time.

I don't know if it was by accident or design but somehow I they stumbled and got something right by not going crazy with these horse stats. Rarely do I see people out there riding the same horses, let's hope they don't realize their mistake and start tweaking things to ruin it.
