You could really play with not having to purchase another horse, so I think I crapped out and mine seemed kind of wimpy around wolves/whatever. The online thoroughbred horse you get for free, was more than worth it. When I first was playing Online, I was wondering where it was then found out I had to go to the stable to get it; think you also had to get that first initial horse first. It was similar with Arthur in single player, where I'm still using that free horse from the ultimate with him (at around 40 percent finished, since that was about the time I got into Online ) The great thing, in both single and online, is that if it dies/disappears you can just go back to the stable and get another one for free. I've still noticed no large difference in temperament among different horse breeds; people swear the turkoman/breton whatever is braver, but the ones I got were just as bad (4 cores, well fed/brushed etc.) I've also really only noticed two temperaments (4 cores, etc. again), they are either middle of the road brave or pretty much max cowardly (but other people will swear that it makes no difference and depends on how the horse is treated.) I even had two of the same level/breed, with everything else equal, which were very different (two Klads, one insanely cowardly and one middle of the road like nearly everything.) So I settle on one that seems generally OK, with the possiblity of max stamina and health (like the Gypsy Cob piebald I'm using.) Then I mash that left thumb stick, for "calm", on the Xbox one when wolves/whatever are on our behind That seems to work well, except for the Legendary ones that seem to auto-buck you no matter what, such as the boars when they are about to charge. I noticed a huge improvement from the early horse to the Red Arabian early on, then another huge improvement when I bought the Turkoman. Then I bought the top Moonshine horse and it was similar to the Turkoman but "feels" a tiny bit better although I cannot explain why. Both the Turkoman and Moonshine horse feel as if they have infinite stamina (they do not, but for practical purposes). kcole4001
Using the Naco saddle with hooded stirrups on any top tier horse will enable you to ride pretty much indefinitely, the other matters are speed and handling, speed only really matters if you race, and handling basically effects how quick they are to do an emergency turn, so not terribly important if you pay close attention to your route and plan your turns. For normal freeroam use just use whatever you like the looks of most unless you get lucky and find a brave mount. Remember to set your preferences in the stable section of player menu for which horse you use for races, freeroam events, etc. Direwrath

I tried to click it again to remove it? Or is my glam metal pretty boy going to be stuck looking like an old man now? Do I ride him into the Barber in town? What do I do? For some reason he looks pleased with himself now though? He reminds me of Ringo Starr in his early days. Direwrath and JumpingKentFlash

The Norfolk Roadster is one of the better horses for racing, those were the ones I used when I would race. They are quick to start, keep their fast pace, and can go the distance far longer than the others. My favorite breed is the Turkoman but after a bit of heavy running, even with a high stamina and the Nago saddle equipped, every one of them tends to slow their pace a little. But they are fast enough to leave other players in the dust. Still none of my Turks take off as fast as my Roadster did at the start. Now the Fox Trotter on the other hand is slow on the start, takes a little bit longer to gather speed, but when they do they can keep their fast pace for some time without losing endurance. Each of the breeds has their ability, just as real horses do, and although the saddles and stirrups make some difference in their stats I don't think it changes their basic set up. However, I've owned every breed of horse in the past 3 years and none of them could outrun anyone in my posse in free roam. Maybe your friends don't control their horses as well as you. The Arabian I have now can keep pace with my friend's 9 horses, all of them different breeds, but can not outrun any of them. Direwrath
With the discount on the Trotters I decided to go ahead and spend the gold for the black and white paint one. I named him Rorschach. He's pretty good so far, a little more skittish than my other Trotter, Goblin, but we haven't fully bonded yet. And also that bridle doesn't fit his nose.... kcole4001 and berzelmayr

I've heard/read this before - are there any proof of that ? Has the developer actually said something about hidden stats ? If this bravery should be true, then I'm out of luck .. Got four horses: Buckskin Mustang I've called "Yellow mist" - Bay frame overo Criollo called "Spot On Girl" - Turkoman Chestnut called "Chip" and finally a Blue Roan Missouri Fox Trotter called "Two Tone" .. All names should be perceived as me trying to be a bit funny, when I've decided what to call them, and has something to do with their color scheme .. As one of the boys said, when he dicided to call his Red Chestnut Arabien for "Brown horse"; It's just a game, they are not real horses, and afterwards he called his Dapple Grey Missouri Fox Trotter for "White horse" .. All my four horses are terrified of snakes - they really don't like bears, and only the Turkoman Chestnut are somewhat indifferent when it comes to wolves .. They all buck me off if a cougar or panther sees us, instead of hitting the throttle and get away from these neurotic cats .. Direwrath

I have most of my horses to the point where they will willingly deal with apex predators, but each horse reacts to their fear in their own way. My brindle Trotter and my Bay Andalusian are not afraid to have little space between them and the chasing cougars, but all three of my Turkoman are better adjusted when they have more distance to run. The one horse I owned that was skittish was the silver dapple grey Breton, he would easily drop me from the saddle to save himself. I also lead the horses differently when we are being chased, with the Trotter and Andalusian I tighten the reins so to speak and retain complete control of where they go, while my other horses I will release them to move how they please. I'll also mash the button to calm them and turn them back when I need to readjust my aim. The one thing I've learned is that it is a good idea to keep the horse turned somewhat toward the animal chasing them, it seems to pause the script that causes the horse to launch you from the saddle as long as you keep them moving while doing so. In the video below notice how my Trotter Goblin, keeps trying to pull her head left and away from the cougar, and how I keep turning her back the other way. This is how she typically responds to a cougar or a bear. Spoiler Krommer

Yeah, mashing the heck out of the button is what I do on my Gypsy Cob (which I like for the full stats, since otherwise horses seem kind of the same.) Another thing I've started doing is not only turning towards the animal, but actually running into/through the pack of wolves on purpose; no idea why but the horse seems less prone to throw than if they are on your tail. In the game and in real life, a horse will panic if it can't see the predator. However, in real life, and unlike the game, horses won't stop in that case. They'll take off like bats out of hell, just like the wild horses do when we approach. Direwrath
