Warning shots... *facepalm*

Recommended Posts

So apparently you can fire warning shots around other players, and they'll get a message on screen saying "Stay away, or risk being shot!"

So what, I can't walk here because another player says so? Not only is a warning shot completely pointless, but what mainly irks me about this feature is that it makes the player sound infuriatingly arrogant. I'd be far more likely to shoot the guy who tells me i have "no right being in his personal space". It's just a more passive form of online bullying in my opinion.

I like it. It's a nice immersive touch and there are precious few methods of communication for those of us who don't care to be on the mic with randos.

Well, often you can't walk there anyway because they'll just shoot ya dead so I say a warning from a feisty player is no bad thing. Keeps our pelts if we turn back, lol.

That said, ain't no griefers gonna be warning folk.

Complains about "bullying" while admitting to "bullying" those who try setting boundaries. 10/10 would fap again.

That's fine and all, but it helps none if you still end up getting shot just because you happen to be travelling on the same road. At that point he's basically telling you: "You're not going to Valentine! I am. Find another place to sell your sh*t"

Now, if i wasn't trying to preserve my good honor points to get past that pesky 75% story mark, he'd have been dead the moment he told me to back off, but no matter how far i backed up, he still didn't see fit to "trust me" in his presence despite the fact that i've been riding behind him for the past two minutes. At that point you'd think he would realize that if i wanted to shoot him, i could've done it ten times over by then...

I agree, this feature seems cool but useless.

When I have a player following me somewhere I try to evade them. If I see they follow me off the road I prepare for combat (only shooting if I see guns drawn and aimed in my direction), and if not I let them pass. That way you can see the other player's intentions without making yourself a target by firing a warning shot.

I avoid other players anyway. Anyone who comes near me gets shot in the face. It saves time.

I know this makes me part of the problem, but so long as I can lose and hour's worth of hunting in the flick of a thumb, especially since after respawn my cores are shot to hell (costing more precious resources), then I'll treat all proximity as an act of aggression. Sigh, just like I did in GTA.

Unless my English is terrible this morning and I'm still tired af, you actually need to lower your honor til about 50% to be able to do the last 75% of the story

I was maxed out on low honor, so i doubt that. I think the game simply forces you to change your honor to the opposite of what you have.

You keep doing that.

I on the other hand will continue to drag perfect animals that I couldn't carry normally to the nearest person to take for themselves. Sure I'm wary of strangers too, but I also like to go out of my way to be nice to people near me. Hopefully it's a trend that'll take off when some random level 26 with a scoped bolt action, who could have popped that noodle several times over by this point, rides up dragging a perfect elk behind him, waves, and rides off.

It’s brilliant, although with lock on aiming it’s completely pointless and we instakill each other in split second from holstered anyway. In freeaim it would make a lot more sense.

It’s not about the personal space or any other new age nonsense. It’s just about someone not wanting you to get closer. It’s a way to communicate your intent.

But with lock on aiming it’s 100% pointless.

Honestly, i feel like someone firing a warning shot is more likely to get shot than to get someone to back off. If you "communicate your intent" to shoot a player, it's as good as inviting a bullet to your face.

Agreed on lock on aiming, because you can instantly shoot someone in the face. Warning shots are thus pointless and have the reverse effect.

In freeaim however there is a lot more uncertainty. You cannot be sure to land a headshot or hit your target at all. Also you have no idea how good of a shot your opponent is. This uncertainty is a great deterrent for violence.

Someone carrying a pelt is always safe from me, but odds are I won't let them get close enough to see what they're carrying - I'll either move off to check intention or dome them if I can't bail. You can't possibly expect me to lay off people bearing down on me in the naive hope that this person will be the 1 in 1000 that isn't hostile. My experience so far is anyone who goes out of their way to come to me is coming at me.

Same. If someone is following you off of the road and into the wilderness, they are coming to grief you, and you need to prepare to defend yourself.

Warning shots wouldn't work on me. If I saw a players gun go off while they were close me me then my natural instinct would be to shoot at them.

Same. Like people have mentioned; especially with auto aim because you just have to press the left trigger and you’ll instantly target that person, so it’s simply a real easy kill.

Hell, it’s more difficult to perform the warning shot than it is to kill the other person.

yea warning shots from my view suggest to me that the person is saying "Watch out, I can and will shoot you at any point if i want to, better watch out" so i would probably just pop the person. If the person really wanted to be friendly, then they have no need to pull out their piece.

But if you both were using freeaim it would be different. You would not ve 95% certain to headshot him and any movement on his part would throw off your aim. That uncertainty would go a long way to make warning shots usable and also for players to keep their guns holstered. With lockon if you’re face to face with someone - if he draws there is nothing  you can do as his aim will follow your movement. With freeaim even a little movement, ducking etc. will throw off his aim, and you will have time to react of he draws his weapon.

I missed this thread/your response yesterday. But I get ya.

That said, I'm with the other chap you speak of. I don't trust a single random. R* encouraged and enabled bad form for years in GTA, and as it stands, this game is no better, IMO. Literally 8 PvE only missions, everything else is PvP or at risk.

And you may have your answer by now, but indeed that's exactly what we need to do. Lower than 50% honour to access that last 25% of story.

If anything I'd probably fire back the instant I heard gunfire if I could see the person, before even getting a notification about a warning shot.

i mean...considering your k/d against players isnt tracked in red dead online (instead, every kill and death you do is tracked broadly.) idk why its an issue for you.

take me, for instance. ill let that random kill on me go and just go about my day, i got sh*t to do.

now if they come at me again, sure. yeah. we fightin.

but no single player is gonna tear into you so badly that itll hurt your stat. (i only bring it up because i cant fathom any other reason for your concern)

If I see someone getting close, I’ll move away from the road and hide behind something so they can’t headshot me and get a gun ready.  If they wave or whistle or whatever, then I give them the benefit of the doubt and let them go about their business.

If they continue to approach and have a gun out and look like they are trying to flank me, I’ll adjust my position and wait to see if they continue to try to flank me.  If they do, I’ll shoot them.

But yeah, if someone is minding their own business and not blocking a road or a vendor and they fire a warning shot, well that’s a pretty good indication that they are actually trying to avoid trouble, even if they aren’t all that friendly.

It was my intention to not bother this guy last night, but then he send a warning shot.

I got triggered and shot him.

It's not a, please leave me alone message. It's more of a, this is my hood GTFA.

There’s probably an etiquette to telling people to stay away.

If you’re in the middle of nowhere, then it’s probably not unreasonable - other people scare away animals, and it’s a big map.

But no one has the right to sole occupation of a town with vendors or to clog up a road.  That’s just antisocial.
