ravynwolvf
I mean, technically I know you can free roam almost right away, but your character is so hamstrung you almost have to finish chapter 2, first. Unless I do, I can't brush my horse, can't grill, can't buy almost any gun, can't fish; it's like the tutorial lasts two chapters. I've already done two play-throughs, and I'm pretty sick of the missions. I can't get into using John, don't want to be a deputy in Rhodes, don't want tuberculous, so there's this tiny little window where it's a good time to run off on your own. I wish there was just a sandbox you could choose at any point past chapter one which opened up all guns and horses and other options, allowed saves, but not achievements. As it is, all you can do is make a save, and use that to start new roaming games. It's an incredible world that's been created; it's a shame you can't just create a character and go explore it (and no thank to online). saintsrow, BilalKurd, Seths and 2 others
TwistOfLime21
I'm barely into chapter two at the moment on my second play through. Its only a couple of missions into it that you get a brush for your horse. As for guns, you can buy the Springfield Rifle pretty early as well as finding the Lancaster Repeater in the gunsmith basement in Rhodes. Seths
It would be dream come true to have free roam mode with Arthur. Just Arthur and the awesome world including NA. At start with maybe 15$ and crappy horse. All sidequests and stranger missions challenges etc available. Work your way to become rich outlaw. Just enjoy the world without any stress and "hurry" from story.
Ziggy_Ivanhoe
I feel like you need to get to around chapter 4 and hold up with the story there to finally get an almost completely free hand. No wanted dead or alive anywhere except for Blackwater(unfortunately) and can't go to New Austin area. But other than that you can pretty much freely explore everywhere else. I'm replaying as well and in Chapter 2. Can't believe how long it took to get just the damn fence and camp upgrades now that I'm doing a second playthrough. The game truly doesn't open up until well into Chapter 3. Gonna stop progressing the story once I get there and before the whole Dutch doesn't want us causing trouble in Rhodes crap. I think the whole 'Dutch doesn't want us causing trouble in Rhodes' business is during/after The New South i.e. the first or second mission you play in Chapter 3. I believe it then doesn't end until after 'A Short Walk in a Pretty Town' after which you're one man down, and Jack gets kidnapped, and all hell is breaking loose in camp. So if you want to stop at a time where you have the most unlocked, and the full gang available to interact with, and you can still shoot up Rhodes to your heart's content - then I think you have to get to Chapter 3, then do 'Further Questions of Female Suffrage' and then stop before you do 'A New South'. You still won't have the horse fence, but otherwise I think everything is unlocked. And Clemens Point is certainly the prettiest camp location as well. Lots of water, and everyone is relatively happy. Ziggy_Ivanhoe
