Go Team Venture
So I’ve discovered a bug that can delete your horse from the game. Let’s say you have a new purchased, registered horse that you haven’t bonded fully with. In my case it was the very expensive black Arabian that I’d bought from San Denis (so it’s a registered horse, it’s absolutely mine). I was on level 2 bonding with it. I went to rob a train, and naturally decided to take some random horse I’d stolen off a guy, as horses can die really easily during train robberies and I didn’t want to risk the black Arabian. Rather than properly stabling the Arabian, I just hitched it in camp, saddled up the random horse, and took off. During the robbery, the random horse was killed. To make matters worse, the saddle wasn’t retrievable (hanging off a bridge and inaccessible). I was out in the wilderness, nowhere near a road. Luckily I came upon some wild horses, one of which I tamed. Took the wild horse to a stable to respawn the saddle. On the road back to camp, I ended up hanging around Emerald Ranch for a couple of hours picking off wagons for a challenge upgrade. During that time, I leveled up the wild horse to three. When I finally returned to camp, the Arabian was gone. Went to the stables, and found he had been deleted from the game... No grayed-out name, nothing. I also never received a notification that he’d died or anything. I’m unsure if the deletion bug happened because I leveled with two different horses while he wasn’t stabled, or if leveling a new horse higher was the culprit, or if having to respawn the saddle had something to do with it. I’m sure some people will say that this is not a bug, and that it’s my own damn fault for not taking the time to ride into town and properly stable the Arabian... And to this I will say, yes it definitely IS a bug, but yes, it is also my own damn fault... The game is absolutely supposed to save a purchased, registered horse that you’ve hitched in camp. Absolutely. Hell, I had some random donkey I’d stolen (no way to bond with them, btw) hitched in the Overlook camp for like the entire time I was there... He never disappeared. But with all the minor bugs that pop up occasionally, I shouldn’t have relied on merely hitching the Arabian... I should have stabled him anyway. Live and learn, I guess.. Revrico
You saddled up the random horse. So you took the saddle off the black Arabian? There's your problem I'm betting. Maybe I just got lucky on my play through, but I only needed 2 bottles of horse reviving potion the whole game. That black Arabian was a tank that wouldn't die unless I jumped off a cliff. jordy-w92 and KingpinRCR

dcaldwellfilms
Yeah. You would've been fine if you didn't take the saddle off the Arabian. I've wanted (in single player) a fifth slot in my stable and since I cannot get one, I've kept a horse as my secondary horse for quite a while now (bonded up to level 4). But I've been 100% fine because I haven't saddled it. (Downside here is I can't fast travel with secondary horse--although it will follow if I use stagecoach/train--and if it dies and I'm on the other horse I may not have enough time to revive it..but I also have auto save off which can fix that.) Go Team Venture
Yep, agreed, it’s my own damn fault for tempting fate... I just wish the game had been thoroughly debugged with regards to the hitching/upgraded hitching post system. I think the fact your horse can die is cool (even if it’s frustrating), and I like the fact that good horses are either hard to find or extremely expensive- it’s realistic. Ditto the bonding system. But to counter-balance that, I think the hitching system needs to be rock-solid. Hitching an owned, registered horse in camp is supposed to be, but it’s just not. Stables from now on for me, until they release a patch... If and when they do get around to a patch for the hitching system, it would be nice if they did like a 24 hour event where the black Arabian could be found in the wild... Of course I have so much damn money at this point, it doesn’t really matter.
Thorson87
Same thing happened to me with the free warhorse. Saddled up a random to go up and get the white arabian. Came back to camp where I left it and it was gone.
MjrOu812
Never put your saddle on a horse you just use temporary...and leave your main horse without one, you will lose it, the only way to not make that mistake is to put your main horse at a stable? And its not a bug. Edited November 29, 2018 by MjrOu812 Psyperactive81
Satanta
Yeah, something similar happened to me. Found a nice Thoroughbred by the road. Had my War Horse but the stats on the TB were a bit better for speed. Took the TB to camp which was closer meaning to take it to the Stables the next morning. Slept and it was there the next morning then I walked past a Gang Mission heading to the TB to stable it and the Mission just took me with no options or interaction from me-not by choice so-to-speak. Finished Mission which made me do something else-go to the Trapper or whatnot, I missremember. Get back to camp TB is still there but I have to shut down and get some sleep in Meatworld for work the next day. Next night TB gone. Nowhere to be found so now I make sure to stable everything I want to keep. I do have the camp maxed out now so have the camp horse stable thingy set up. redamed9292
i believe what happened to me is close to this. I had a good horse as a temporary and while on a mission or something i took another horse and that horse became temporary therefore replaced the good horse i had
MjrOu812
The saddle is the key, and you can only have one....its also coded for which horse you are using, and when you save your game. Edited November 30, 2018 by MjrOu812
Satanta
I'm way over in Rhodes and was headed up to do a Gunslinger Mission in the Grizzlies so it is a heck of a ride. Stopped at Emerald Ranch-got shangheid by a woman needing a ride there and since it was technically on the way I helped her. She mentioned something about something worth checked out at ER so I took the time to do such. Got dark, I got into a little problem and had to skeedaddle. Couldn't see my horse [[It was dark so I 'borrowed' one and hightailed it for the Hills. Called my Main and it came along. Bonded with Number 2 and figured a pack horse for the Grizzlies would be good. Good thing as I got a 3* Wolf and a poor bear, dumped the bear and plan to replace it with a 3* whatever gets in the way. I've been switching off-kept saddle on main but ride second for a bit then switch back-hope to keep both together till I get around to a particular lake for a particular horse then release Number 2 unless all three come along then sell number 2, stable Main and make new horse Main. Seems to be ok so far. Edited November 30, 2018 by Satanta
SM00V 0PERAT0R
The only bug I have encountered on horses is when my effin pelts disappear. It's happened to me twice, but the second time I went to hunt a legendary animal, came back, and two of my pecca... whatever... fancy desert pig hides were gone. Didn't test how long it would work for though.
