Top 5 sad moments

What parts of this game got to you the most?  Don't pretend the room was just dusty, we all know better.  Obviously massive spoilers ahead!

For me:

1. Arthur's horse dying in the middle of Red Dead Redemption.  Just brutal.  Going to find myself a good horse was one of the very first things I did after chapter 1, and I had her all the way up to the end.  The way he cradles her head and thanks her... hoo boy. I welled up.

2. Arthur's last ride into camp, with that song playing and all the quotes of people talking about the good things he did.  A little sentimental but it worked.

3. The quasi-forgiveness of Mrs. Downes.  I've never felt as terrible about doing something in a game as during those first two missions, and when you run into her later in St. Denis and then Annesburg with no warning, damn that hurt.  I was not really expecting to help her get out with her son, and it tugged the ol' heart strings.  One weird footnote though: if you go to Annesburg earlier than a certain mission in chapter 6, you'll get the last actual mission with her first, and later (when you play the other mission) there's a quick cut scene involving her where she's back in town working as a prostitute again.  I'm pretty sure it's just an oversight in the sequencing, but it actually works both ways, making it seem like maybe her son left but she stayed.  Which was one last blast of horrible feelings.

4. Arthur dying.  Weird that it ranks this low, but maybe I was already tapped out from #1 and #2 on that final mission.

5. Hosea.  Damn you, Dutch.

Yes the horse dying got me, I had a white Arabian, he looked like my all white doggy so the transference was strong.

Rather than go for the obvious ones like Arthur dying I'll try and mention some that maybe others didn't necessarily think of (In no particular order btw).

1) Mary's reaction when Arthur declines to find Jamie. I chose to find him in my first game, but in the second I said no. It looked like she was going to break down and it made me feel guilty instantly.

2) Strauss being kicked out of the camp only to find out later on he died after being in Pinkerton custody,

3) When John proposes to Abigail. I know it's supposed to be a contextually happy moment, but when you realise their lives are cut short due to what happens in Red Dead Redemption it makes the whole thing feel really weird and sad looking back in hindsight.

4)The gang's slow descent into chaos by the time they reach Beaver Hollow.

5) Arthur's kindness towards Charlotte. Even though he teaches her how to survive I still felt really sad for her.

The whole story between Arthur Morgan and Mary Linton

The last letter from Mary is worth any words.

Spoiler

My Dear Arthur,
You never showed up, and now, after looking at the newspapers, I understand why. I don't imagine you will receive this letter but I nonetheless must send it. Arthur, oh, Arthur. I was just starting to dream the silliest and softest of dreams. I miss you, and I will always miss you but I cannot live like that, and it seems you cannot live any other way.

When I am with you, the world makes sense, but when we are apart, I see clearly that your world is not a world from which one can escape. I am so sorry, for everything, for everything long ago and for starting up that business again. There's a good man within you, Arthur, but he is wrestling with a giant. And the giant, wins, time and again. You've broken my heart, again, and I fear I have broken yours.

For that, I will never forgive myself, but you must let me go now. I enclose a ring you gave me many years ago, when we were both young, not because I don't like it, but because I care for it far too much and it reminds me too much of you. I hope, one day, you will find some people in love who can use this, for it kept me thinking of you all these years, and I hope by returning it to you, I can finally be free.
Goodbye,
Mary

John Marston, the ghost father

Recovering Little Jackie from Angelo Bronte was supposed to be a cheerful moment, but the embarrassment felt by his father John when returning to camp was heartbreaking. Of course, he was a truly awful father for the duration of chapter 2 and chapter 3, but still... If it wasn't enough to be humiliated by your own son calling his host "Papa", he wasn't even acknowledged by Abigail during the whole scene. You can see the confusion and disappointment within him.

The death of Hosea Matthews

I was truly fond of him, and seeing him walk so slowly towards the bank at the mercy of Agent Milton was incredibly painful.

Rains Fall seeing his son Eagle Flies die before his eyes

No parent should have to bury their child. Period.

Recovering debts from broken people

You can't help but feel miserable about that.

Can't be bothered to do a full five and most people already mentioned much of what I would've said but the death of Lenny actually hit me lol how he died so quickly and really for no reason on the roof hurt especially when u had no time to react due to being shot at by tons of pinker tons , same can be said for sean didn't hurt to see him die but was more abit of a gutted moment yes he was portrayed as an annoying Irish bastard but he was the funniest and one of the most interesting to be round imo

Lenny's death was rough.  One of those "holy sh*t!" moments.

It would have broken the mood but I would have laughed if Arthur just yelled "LENNAH! LENNAHHH!" a couple times right then.

Same tbh and that's what I mean I blinked and almost missed it and after that drunken 'rampage' with Lenny it felt as if him and Arthur had an actuall bond what maybe wasn't obviously seen throughout the game I.e we don't see him partaking in debauchery like this really with anyone else and also he was a nice f*cking dudeeee!

Pretty much summed it up for me as well.

Starting from the last ride to camp, it was getting harder to keep things under control until the end.

After the final sunset I had to put the game away for a while.

I was amazed at how well they put this together for emotional response.

The epilogue and everything after made me sadder than everything else in the game.

The domino challenges

The distinct lack of whores

Not being able to use the gallows on people I've hog tied.

Realizing I probably won't get a Sadie standalone game

Reviving this thread, because I finally finished Chapter 6 last night.....

......and actually I didn't find Arthur's death in itself especially sad. I/he'd obviously known it was coming for the entire length of Chapter 6 (which took me about 30 hours!) and so he'd had a chance to reflect and do some good with what time he had remaining. After all the pain and the suffering, and the killing and the betrayal - he was finally at peace. It was slightly frustrating that he couldn't drag Dutch back to his side in the Micah vs. Arthur stakes, but that was at least fought out to a draw.

But the scene ten minutes before where he says goodbye to his horse? Ooooh boy. More emotion there than I've felt at any form of entertainment since Bing Bong! And all for a video game animal! I think it was the beautifully, understated nature of the 'Thank You' that got to me - so many thoughts, feelings and experiences distilled down into a single look, a gesture and a couple of words. Truly great acting and writing.

Oh man, losing my horse could easily be 1-4. She was my spotted Appaloosa and the room was very dusty in that moment.

I'm almost dreading a second play through because of it.

The whole game is sad now, I'm a bit into chapter 6, rescued John Marston, so many dead and Arthur have a terminal illness, the only good that has happen so far in chapter 6 is when Arthur was throwing Strauss out of the camp, yes come on Arthur, get that weasel out of here and I couldn't do other than smile and laugh a bit for myself (I didn't have the heart to take the money in the last money lending missions), happy to see Swanson is back on his feat as well, I'm doing all the side missions before I help Dutch and Micah (I don't really want to help them out anymore), I hope they die in Annesburg while I'm taking care of Arthur, he is eating as much resturant food he can, frequent hot baths with help and sleep indoors as much as he can, his honor is through the roof, so not much to improve there, but it sure is sad times in my RDR 2 now 😢.

For me personally it was probably when Arthur gets abandoned and betrayed by his gang multiple times. A decade of his life is given to the people he was loyal to who he viewed as his family and suffered the consequences of doing the dirty specifically because the gang life and them was all he had. So them just leaving him behind like that and Dutch leaving him left to die more than once was just sad. Sadie each time watches this go down and every time it all happens there is the recurring theme of Sadie telling Arthur her and him is all they need. Near the end when he saves Eagle Flies but Eaglie Flies is dying, Charles says he's coming along, Sadie is behind Arthur and the camera will swap onto Sadie and she says; "And so I will I...." Yelling loudly, but Arthur won't turn and look at her and tells her no, as he parts ways you can hear Sadie in the back quietly saying; "Stay safe.. Arthur."

I found that sad. Sadie wanted to be with Arthur to the very end.

5. John's interactions with his family are pretty sad, like when Abigail and Jack leave him or when Jack seems more proud of Bronte than John; consider that even though Arthur gave John extra time with his family, he wasn't able to be a good husband and father for most of that time

4. Hosea's death scene and the gang's reaction to his death

3. Eagle Flies' death scene in Rain Fall's tent

2. Mary's last letter to Arthur

1. Arthur's low honor death scenes

My wife happened to be in the room watching during that entire mission. I had told her briefly before then about the story of RDR and how it was so bittersweet seeing them happy together because you know what is coming. After the mission ended and John is just leaning on a fence, looking out at the sunset, she actually got a little misty-eyed and said, "Oh that is so sad." Can't disagree!

I don't have any moments to add as all the ones that I felt were the saddest have been said here. I just want to say that Rockstar sure knows how to write an emotional compelling story. I don't cry often but BOAH let me tell you, the last few chapters with Arthur... I dread a second playthrough.

Thought I'd bump this by adding some underrated sad scenes.

- Hamish (the legless veteran) dying. Was extremely tragic as you could tell Arthur saw the veteran as a father figure, which used to be Hosea before his demise 💔

- Arthurs conversation with Reverend Swanson/Mother Calderon at the train station. I got the reverend Swanson conversation on my initial playthrough but both are equally as sad. Especially when Arthur admits that he's afraid of dying.

- Arthurs horse dying at the end of chapter 6. What made this one even more tragic was that the horse I had at the time was Buell, the horse Hamish asks you to take care of before his demise.

- All the interactions with the armless, homeless vet. Almost nothing is known about him but its assumed he's lived a tragic life, which is heartbreaking considering how nice he is to John and Arthur (besides trying to pickpocket them I guess lol)

- Lenny's death. This one's been mentioned a few times, but nothing will top it for me. The way Arthur holds Lenny in his arms and looks at him - its like a parent watching their child die.

Just going to add a couple which I don’t think have been mentioned yet:

- Mickey talking to Arthur after Arthur realises he has TB. A surprisingly sad conversation, all about death really.

- after Arthur gets his diagnosis at the doctors he goes into the streets of St Denis in shock. The streets are deserted, and then that stag walks into view, the same stag he sees in his dreams. I welled up at that

1. Arthur giving John his hat

2. The ride back to camp (That's the way it is).

3. Seeing Arthur Morgan's grave in the credits

This one is so big for me. Just when I was starting to feel better, you see that, and realize how much of the game you spent with Arthur, and how much of the story was his legacy.

4. Kieran's death

5. When Mickey says he's gonna miss Arthur. The first couple of conversations are fun and goofy during Chapter 2, when everything is upbeat. It's really sad in the end when even that is all melancholy.
