Arthur and Guarma

Recommended Posts

So now the online Youtubers are trying to state that Arthur didn't get TB from Chapter 2 Downes mission. They are trying to pass it on that he got it while on the boat from a sailor in Chapter 5. I didn't catch it yet but they state a sailor coughs on Arthur.

They say nobody states downes had TB, or when he dies.

Why wasn't his wife sick with TB.

I say BS. The whole Downes scene with the cough, blood and such set the wheels in motion.

What are your thoughts?

It's really obvious and during the initial encounter, Edith Downes proclaims that her husband is sick.

Just FYI you should probably add a Spoilers tag to the thread title, but as this thread has been tagged with "Spoiler" I won't use a spoiler thingo.

There are multiple reasons why this theory is wrong.

  • First and foremost, Arthur acknowledges he got TB from Thomas Downes when meeting with the Nun.
  • TB takes a long time to develop. Before Guarma, IIRC Arthur is still coughing which means obviously means it was in its initial stages.
  • It's very clear Downes had TB has he shared the same symptoms we see with Arthur later in the game (coughing blood being the most prevalent).
  • There are a multitude of reasons why his wife (probably) didn't get TB but are not limited to: Downes knowing he had TB and avoided spreading it to his family, Downes simply not coughing on his family, etc.
  • Following the point above this, why didn't anyone Arthur interact with get TB? He coughed quite close to them. The answer that more or less makes this point a close case is Rockstar Logic.

Whoever made this theory is simply incorrect. As the poster above me stated, it's just obvious. The game goes out of its way to make sure the player knows how Arthur got TB.

But you only see the NUN if you honor is on the med to pure good side. If your honor is on the barbage side you dont see the NUN. I was on the way crappy side on that quest and didnt get the NUN at all.

I knew somewhere in game he did state downes got him sick.

Doesn't make sense since Arthur says himself he got TB beating a guy for a few dollars. He clearly means Thomas Downes from chapter 2.

I wonder about this too. Micah definitely should've gotten TB, no way Arthur's blood didn't end up on him. Almost anyone Arthur fought with after chapter 2 would've gotten it.

Yeah honestly this has been bothering me as well. It's hard to ignore considering how close Arthur gets to people and how even though he visually becomes more deteriorated and sick people still go up to him or Arthur making physical contact with other people.

If I recall he also makes a mention of it around the last dept collection mission

I haven't even finished the story yet, but the answer to this seems clear to me.

Thomas Downes, on the face of it, is not an important character. He's just another random NPC and debtor in the first half of the game. But the game keeps introducing him to you, whether you like it or not:

1) He's the guy who's first on the scene after you win your fight in 'Americans at Rest'

2) He's the only debt collection mission that you have to do. You have to do one of the first three, but you can choose which and miss the other two if you like. You can skip the later ones. But you have to go see Thomas Downes, despite the fact that the encounter is just a basic cut scene and beating. Nothing new or interesting

3) After you've just robbed the bank of Valentine in 'Sodom? Back to Gomorrah', you have to head back to Downes Ranch to get the money. In other words, after one of the biggest, most action-packed set pieces of the game to that point - you have to turn around and ride across the Heartlands for another simple cut scene

4) You run into Downes' wife again in St. Denis during the second Brother Dawkins mission

Of course, he's also one of the first random encounter NPCs that you'll naturally come across the first time you head to Valentine.

There may be more after that, that I just haven't gotten to yet.

The game insists repeatedly that you interact with him and his family, despite on the face of it them being of no particular importance. They're just another decent, generic family that Arthur, Dutch and the gang have harmed in selfish pursuit of their freedom.

Why? Because this particular family is special as they're going to have their revenge. In bacterial form.

On the 'why isn't everyone else sick' front (from Wiki):

About 90% of those infected with M. tuberculosis have asymptomatic, latent TB infections (sometimes called LTBI), with only a 10% lifetime chance that the latent infection will progress to overt, active tuberculous disease.

Arthur (and Thomas Downes) was just unlucky.

And in the last of those Chapter 5 encounters with Elizabeth Downes, Arthure coughs and she says, "You sound just like my husband."

So, I have a question about this Downes "redemption" arc.  Thomas Downes was going to die soon anyway, so Elizabeth Downes and son would have still been in about the same place as they were after Arthur did the beatdown on Thomas Downes.

The question is, how much of Elizabeth and son's misfortune was due to Arthur?  How would they have been able to break even on their little farm?  Thomas Downes stated that the property was already underwater financially.

I did the Javier Homestead Robbery mission before the first Downes mission and during that Arthur has to help Javier move some items out of the way of the money stash and Arthur has a full blown coughing fit. Yet I can't tell if it's supposed to be related to the TB or not, as 1. I did it before he gets TB, and 2. He doesn't cough like this again throughout chapter 3 and 4, if my memory serves me right?

It feels like Rockstar should patch the mission order a little, as you can start those "Redemption" missions before you encounter Elizabeth Downes in the story again. And I really believe that coughing episode with Javier is related, replay that mission and you will see what I mean.

People love overthinking things.  He clearly got it from Downes.  This is made as plain as possible on multiple occasions.

It's pretty obvious he got TB from Downes. He even writes in his journal: "All them bullets shot at me, all them horses threw me, all them fights and it was beating up that pathetic little fella Downes that killed me. I reckon. He's the only man I been near was real sick."
