Will Rockstar abandon Singleplayer because of Online again?

Recommended Posts

3Prcntr

Of course they will. Just wish all those online players would stop feeding their greed.

Online gameplay nowadays sucks, period. Good single player stories are like movies you can control, but in this day, a rare thing for a billion dollar industry to care about when they can get you to buy shark cards and increase their profit.

Dear Lord......

Rockstar just spent 8 years making the SP version of RDR2. And it is glorious. Bigger, longer and full of more content than I could have hoped for.

And now people are already complaining at them because they think there's a chance that RDRO becomes the focus, rather than SP DLC?

Rockstar should fix the bugs in the SP game (and from the sounds of things, the new patch does correct the biggest one) but beyond that they've delivered for SP fans in a big way with this game. To expect anything more seems, frankly, entitled to me.

And if they now turn their attentions fully to Online (and by the way, GTAO has been vastly more profitable for them than any previous SP DLC. By, like, several orders of magnitude) then I can't blame them in the least.

All I hope is that they've already got the developers going full steam at whatever their next release will be. And that they devote as much love and attention to the SP version of that release as they have with this one.

I think there will be one story DLC at least, whether it's set in the normal game world, or fantasy like Undead Nightmare.

My gut tells me this will be a repeat of GTA V, where single player is abandoned altogether by ~2020 (with only bug fixes and *some* online content added).

However, there's so much potential for DLCs, be they story ones (i.e. Blackwater Massacre, John's year away from the gang, Sadie or Charles DLC) or something like Undead Nightmare II.  I'd also be a huge fan of a New Game Plus option.  I have all the trinkets/talismans and the Legend of the East outfit but I couldn't get a large number of these until the epilogue, when they don't really provide you any benefit (okay 20% less core drain on 10/10 of all cores is nice...but would've been nice for missions).  They could bring back the hardcore difficulty for New Game Plus.

I agree.  I am very much hoping for more single player content, but if it doesn't come, I got my money's worth and then some. This game is a staggering epic; they didn't stint on it in any way.  They could have released the two epilogues as DLC for $20 and I would have happily paid it - I just reached epilogue 1 today and still have so much ahead of me, and so many hours behind me.  An absolutely monumental game despite all the doomsayers predicting the single player would be half-assed simply because GTA Online was a success.

I don't think we'll see any new content in any form for the single player - barring a remaster on PS5/ whatever the next Xbox is/ PC.

Weapons, horses, and other gameplay additions will be added to online but won't see single player. I'm mostly okay with that although I'd love a bit more weapon variety.

It'd obviously be nice to see SP DLC, but it ain't happening.

I will be optimistic and say maybe they will surprise us. Most of this board didn't even expect the game itself to be as good as it is. Given their history with GTAO I understand why people are being skeptical.

They need to make a DLC taking place in New Austin as Arthur leading up to the Blackwater fiasco and escape to Colter.

Yeah that would be great, would love to explore New Austin and Blackwater with Arthur, the original map was wasted in the main game and there wasn't much to do there

I dunno, SP and Online have vastly different feelings to them, and there's plenty of opportunity to cater to both if they've managed to plan ahead better this time around (as opposed to GTA V where all teams ended up working on Online).

Singleplayer utilizes the world to present a slow-burn cinematic experience, whereas Online utilizes the world as a PvP/PvE platform.

It's not entitled to ask for more, but I think it's an opportunity to further expand on the world and its characters in ways that Online can't, whereas Online offers the opportunity for new ways of gameplay that might not be appropriate in Singleplayer. Otherwise, I think it'll be a waste of a meticulously created world and lore- there's still many stories left to explore, IMO.

There is so much I wish they would fix/add/change with singleplayer.

It's a pipe dream now.

I don't know. Unlike GTA V which left me wanting more from its disappointing single player Red Dead Redemption 2 ticks all the right boxes IMO where it doesn't really need DLC. Sure there could be some minor things added/fixed, but I wouldn't lose sleep if R* turned all of their attention over to RDO.

I think they learned from their mistake of promising DLC in GTA V (and failing to deliver) to delivering a better wrapped package this time. It would certainly be a nice surprise though.

Most certainly they will.

Empty NA and now Bonnie for online only pretty much confirms for me that the focus and content will be online from now on.

I highly doubt any meaningful SP content DLC.

I would like to see the full map opened up to Arthur after completion of the story. Maybe an optional cut scene after the epilogue where

Spoiler

Arthur gets rescued by some travelers headed to Blackwater. They recognize his illness and bring him to a doctor just outside of Blackwater who can help. He barely makes it but lives to ride another day. He re establishes himself and the bounties facing him across Blackwater fade under the strong notion that he had been left for dead.

I remember too well how R* handled GTA V single player after launch - and I would be seriously suprised if they will release any meaningful SP content. Which is IMO unlikely.

They will focus on Online content from now on. GTA Online was a gold mine for them and they want the same from RDO.

I believe they will abandon it like GTA V single player. They are too busy counting all them stacks for selling $1000 hats in RDO.

It is clear they put a lot of effort into SP and the story unlike V which felt sort of rushed. I don't think they would do that to just abandon it like it's nothing.

Its been a month now and there hasn’t even been a single patch, I think that’s where the answer lies. It will be all about the Online again unfortunately... we will be lucky to get a patch at all to iron out some of the bugs. SP DLC?! Nah, it won’t happen.

Well if they ignore sp again I most likely won't be buying gta 6. I put up with one game, and If they focus on online again I'm done. I have hardly any interest in online play.

I really am hoping that they have the proper staffing available this time around, as it seems more like they didn't have enough manpower back then for GTA V Online and RDRII combined.

Further explaining why GTA V never got any single-player expansions, Sarwar said it came down to a lack of resources, in addition to the company's focus on its next big game, Red Dead Redemption 2. For GTA V, "We did not feel single-player expansions were either possible or necessary, but we may well do them for future projects."

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-5-story-dlc-expansions-wont-happen-and-heres-w/1100-6454293/

This article below notes that GTAVO was struggling badly until they introduced heists along with some substantial updates in 2014. These were probably the updates that ate up the most manpower, and doomed SP DLC for GTA V.

For this reason alone, I do have some concerns that the amount of work needed to bring RDO up to speed might cause a repeat of the same situtation. RDO Beta is clearly barebones even for a beta state, and they're going to need to do a lot of work if they don't want the player count to drop substantially once everyone gets a taste. I also believe that Rockstar North and New York are probably handling the Online component like they did for GTAVO, hence the reason why the multiplayer feels so similar.

That being said, the fact that RDRII SP was headed by Rockstar San Diego might shield them from the staffing issues that plagued GTAVO, since the single-player and multiplayer components for GTA V were headed by Rockstar North. This is all extrapolation though, so please take it with a grain of salt.

The single player still need patches and updates, it is not perfect.

Can't remove off hand holster.

Can't remove satchel.

Can't close coats.

Shirt get closed when equipping a mask or the bandana.

Volumetric clouds that sometimes move and form too fast.

A few things in the wanted/witness system.

'CRIME REPORTED' at some point during train robberies even tho there is not witnesses and nothing is actually reported.

NPC's freak out if you walk behind them for a few seconds.

etc

I'm going to mention again as I do nearly every time a topic like this comes up, that Dan Houser once cited the poor sales for EFLC as a valid reason that the company MIGHT not create single player DLC in the future. Now, I know people will debate forever more about whether Rockstar promised single player DLC for GTA V, but the truth is, if the company felt it wouldn't sell decently, they had all rights to plan accordingly. However, they just released the largest single player campaign in the company's history with RDR 2, so to me, even if we never see any more single player stuff for it, it was still well worth the money.

No game is perfect..while I would like to see some of these things improved I doubt it will happen. They aren't huge issues so Rockstar doesn't care, remember GTA V had way more issues and none if was fixed

You can quote me on this when I say there will most likely be a Sadie dlc and I was right when I predicted that RDR2 would be a gritty and serious game. They know many want a SP DLC plus they get some woke points for having a female protagonist while not really alienating the main fanbase because it is considered sort of a side dish.

If they are going to take time to develop really good story mode dlc, I think I would want it in RDO and not story mode. However, I want it in RDO in a PvE lobby. If it's going to be in PvP lobbies, forget it. I'm just not interested in PvP being a thing 100% of the time.

Story mode already has plenty in it that can keep me playing for many months, if not years.

I dunno. I’d give it a 50/50.

The argument against more SP DLC is the same one for GTAV... Online content is more profitable, assuming you’ve got the numbers in kiddie players.

The argument for is equally simple... RDR2 players are a more mature demographic than GTAV. Don’t get me wrong, I love some GTAV, but so does your average 13 year old. And usually they aren’t so into RDR2. And I’m not so into GTAVO.

You know what I WOULD be into? An online version that didn’t stick me in a free-for-all world with other random players I don’t know, running around dressed goofily, acting goofily, and generally ruining the realism of the game... Rather a closed online world, just for me and some friends. Basically, if every group was able to curate their own online experience, so you weren’t running into random idiots every five minutes, that would be great. So you’re online, but only with like 5-10 other people. Essentially it would be like a closed COD group, but an entire game with story and everything. I’m not a tech guy, but it feels like maybe I’m discussing something that would require an ungodly amount of server?..

To be honest, EFLC was essentially a repackaged version of the DLC that offered little more than what was already there. From what I've looked at, the GTA IV DLCs were Xbox Live (!) exclusives for some time before finally being released on other platforms and by then, it was already too late- nearly a full year after GTA IV. On top of that, GTA IV was still disliked by the GTA community back then for its differences from previous GTA titles. It's little wonder that it didn't sell well.

I assume you're referring to this:

https://kotaku.com/take-two-grand-theft-auto-episodes-market-smaller-tha-31965812

I also have a gut feeling that the player gameplay goals and audiences for RDR and GTA are different. I know that I never finished GTA IV's story nor its DLCs,and instead used the game to mess around in Liberty City. In contrast, I'm far more interested in RDRII's story, possibly due to its roleplaying mechanics, cast of memorable characters, and difference in general mood and gameplay.

I think that this "Rockstar worked really hard and already gave me my money's worth" mindset potentially misses out on the potential to build up a fan ecosystem based on an already strong story, setting, and cast of characters- the Witcher 3 was able to do this with its free DLCs and paid expansions, and people do continue to buy that game and its expansions long after its release.

At this point, I think all we can do is speculate until the dust settles a few months from now and Rockstar reveals its plans for the game.
