During the intro to the game it states that the year is 1899.

In chapter 1 Hosea says that it is May as he is bitching about the snow.

Then all this time supposedly passes, however when we get back from Cuba there is a letter waiting at the post office from the Mayor of Saint Denis.

It states that the letter was sent 14 days ago.

The date on the letter is May 1899.

 

How?

 

It's a plot hole that needs filling.

I'm copying my response from another thread, because is addresses your question as well.  I think I should just put this answer on a hotkey, because it applies to so many situations in Rockstar games.

I got that letter in chapter 4 so, it's not just after cuba

Since Online takes place in 1898 or 1899 (just before RDR2), is the Adler ranch still standing and not a pile of rubble and ash?
